i was lighting up a jay, with my best friend and the next door neighbor. i start it, my best friend hits it, and right before he passes it to the new guy [the nextdoor neighbor] yawns and i see this mean fucking cold sore. so i swipe the jay, and i was like "this motherfuckers got a cold sore". so, we tell him to open up. my best friend sees it and we tell him to fuck off.

anyways it just got me thinking and i did alittle bit of research, and i was just extremly pissed just because i was thinking if this kid didnt yawn, odds are i would be "infected" and ive never had a cold sore or anything of that nature. and how its extremly fucked up because its not like it goes away, herpes is a life sentance, and i know its really not a big deal but its a big enough deal, where i dont want to deal with it.

i had to vent on my close call.

what are your guy's thoughts on cold sores and smoking?
and what should be the punishment for people who spread herpes?

If I have any type of cold sore or sore throat, then I don't smoke with my friends. I usually pack my own bowl and smoke that while they pass one around. And they do the same for us.

I avoid sharing drinks and whatnot because I apparently got some seriously bad cold sores from sharing a beverage. I think that the vast majority of the population has the herpes cold sore virus, so if you're concerned you shouldn't share anything with anybody, although I'm guessing that sharing a pipe is less risky then sharing a drink. You could always sanitize the pipe with alcohol before using it, or flame it with a lighter. You can also get the bacteria that causes ulcers, and all kinds of other stuff, from sharing pipes and beverages and the like.

Keep in mind that the herpes virus that causes cold sores is very different from the one that causes the sexually transmitted form of the disease.

In fact, the majority of people have the cold sore kind -- it's frequently passed from parent to child. Just because you never had an outbreak doesn't mean you are not infected. The more benign form associated with cold sores often lays dormant, sometimes for peoples' whole lives.

Still, not cool to smoke with people when you have a cold sore.

Keep in mind though, it could have just been a canker sore (though I'd have to see it to know). I'd get canker's all the time till my late teen years when I ate too much sugar, some people can get them from eating chocolate. They're not caused by any type of infection, just a messed up PH balance.
