NEW YORK Despite rising criticism from some quarters, Gen. David Petraeus appears to command considerable respect from the average American, a new Gallup poll reveals, booosting the chances that his much-publicized September report on the "surge" will be treated as credible by most.

The poll of 1,012 adults, taken earlier this month, found that 47% give him a favorable rating, and only 21% unfavorable. The rest had not heard of him or had no opinion.

This is the first time that Gallup asked Americans about their overall opinion of Petraeus.

In April, however, Gallup asked about the reliability of various leaders as "a source of accurate information about current conditions in Iraq." Eighty percent of Americans said Petraeus was a "very" (43%) or "somewhat" (37%) reliable source of information about conditions in Iraq, while just 13% said he was "not too" or "not at all" reliable.

"Americans viewed Petraeus as a much more reliable source than any of the other 16 leaders listed in the poll, including President Bush, members of the Bush administration, and leading Republican and Democratic presidential candidates," Gallup reports today.

"These results help explain why a majority of Americans, 56%, say Congress should not develop a new policy on Iraq until September when Petraeus reports on the progress of the U.S. troop surge."

Critics have charged tha Petraeus has been a strong booster of the war since the beginning, has been proven wrong in some of his earlier projections, and made up his mind long ago that the "surge" deserved to keep moving forward.

Your dumb ass leaders dont even have a plan B.But why would you need one when the only thing to do is stay the course.Maybe when you have a draft these chickenhawks like P4B will be protesting against this war because his grandkids or kids will have to fight or die for OIL.

The draft is on the way, believe it. I've got a hundred dollar bet with my wife that before we leave Iraq, there will be a draft.

some of us chime in on the side of moderation from time to time. it's just so exhausting to have to repeatedly respond to these prison planet devotees, ivory tower liberals and, lest we forget, that handful of canadians trying to convince the world that their country is of some importance on the world stage.

I beg your pardon. I'm surely not anywhere close to any Ivory towers, and it I were, the occupants would be throwing the contents of their night pots on me. So your liberal claim certainly doesn't apply to me. I'm more left than right, to that I'll agree, but the doo-gooders from the liberal rich have nothing in common with me. I had to work for every dime I have and there aren't that many of them. Your supposed centrist position seems canted towards the right a bit, IMHO.

He must be talking about me and my little country. But Canada is content on being a little country amongst many little countrys. You see this way my tax dollars go to healthcare which is ranked better than yours, education wich is ranked better than yours, and social services which are better than yours. So if your happy about your tax dollars going to Haliburton and other such companies then im happy for you.Im just grateful that i live in a country where the government treats its citizens with a little more respect and doesnt treat its citizens like mindless sheep......
