Pipe question

i was wondering
i have a homemade pipe with a carb...
the other day i decided to toke it up but whenever i took a hit...no smoke would fill the chamber but my throat would burn a little bit...then i'd exhale but no smoke...i was like wtf and switched to my water bong but i was just wondering if any of you knew what is up with this??

true..but why would no smoke come out when i exhale??im not holding my hits in for THAT long
