any idea what actually caused him to flip and try?
i knwo someone's gonna argue my opinion but he might not need prison/jail, he might need mental care facility or a secure rest home...
basicly, did he know what he was doing, like fully (anger) or did he kinda take a dive off the deep end?

yeah i was kinda wondering that, given the circumstances he listed, perhaps due to his bi-polarity and alzheimers he figured it was a reasonable option, without properly thinking it through

Him being 70, bi-polar, and having alzheimers is more than likely what caused this even, especially if he ever served in a war/has seen lots of violence in his life. Depending on the stage of alzheimers, he could have thought that she was someone she was not, an enemy of sorts, and therefor he attacked. But, it seems like it worked out alright, so that's good.

I wish you the best of luck in this situation. I agree with Unknownfigure about alzheimers. In it's early stage people seem very confused and it can cause all sorts of weird problems.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened. Don't forget, Gramps isn't a monster his old age and stress aren't a great combo, along with medication he may be on to help him with his diseases. Just remember the man he used to be or still is, and how remarkable he is. Give both your nan and grandad your love and support, they need it.

Oh hon, how awful! It's not really your Granddad's fault- his conditions and meds have changed him. I'm afraid that this is one of those situations where things are not going to get better for a long time. I expect that a "not guilty by reason of mental defect" plea will be filed. Hopefully, he will be placed in a secure facility where he can be cared for. It is no longer safe for him to be with family.
The hugest tragedy in this thing is that all of his conditions often respond to cannabis! (The bipolar reaction can be unpredictable- it helps some, makes some worse.) Cannabis prevents amyloid plaques, one of the physical signs of Alzheimer's. It also calms agitation. (click the medical studies link in my sig. Alzheimer's is one of the first topics).
Cannabis MUST be legalized for medical use- tragedies like this don't need to happen! I'm just saying that, if the studies are right, if granddad had used cannabis, he would have had fewer amyloid plaques in his brain, would have been less agitated, would have had fewer Parkinson's symptoms and, perhaps, would have had fewer bipolar problems. (My Mom was bipolar and I have a mild form of it. Cannabis "evens me out". )
Hang in there, hon. And I wish the best possible outcome for you and your family. - Granny:hippy:

Sounds like your gpop needs serious psychiatric treatment instead of prison though. And your grandmother needs some TLC. Damn that's some serious shit. Good luck bro and that's straight from the heart.
