I have been without herb for two weeks now :(. I know no smokers where i live now, and sice I never want to be dry again i am going to have to start growing again. I used to grow with a 400w mh/hps dwc set up, but my ballast burned out, and recently i moved and 400w would really be too much for my living situation now. I want to do 1-2 plants in a dwc and lst or scrog them.

So i am planning on doing something very similar to this:

I am really thinking of just using the top of this set up as a cheap light fixture and putting it on chains in my closet to raise and lower if necessary. I would like 100-150 watts. So im planning on using either 3 42w compact flouros or 6 27w ones like in the link. It all depends on which bulbs i can find at lowes or walmart. So far I have one question, im sure i will come up with more as i go.

I know i want to use 6500k bulbs for veg and 2700k for flower, but do you switch all the bulbs or just a few? For flowering, would it be better to use say 4 6500k bulbs and 2 2700k or all 2700k, or some other mix?

i just put a few into flowering for my first time using cfl's. they went from 4 65k 42watt cfl's during veg to 5 42watt 27k cfl's and are doing great. but its my first time so im just going by trial and error but so far so good

The main reason you want to use different colors of light is that blue keeps your stems from growing too long, which you want during vegetation to keep your plants somewhat compact. However, when you start flowering, you want your plants to stretch out and leave a lot of room for buds on their stems, which redder light will do.

If you're growing with just CFLs, you're probably not going to get massive yields anyway, and you want your plants to stay short, so you can use more blue light. However, try and alternate them so that your plants aren't getting different colors of light from different sides. This can make plants twist in funny ways, and if this is happening, then switch to just one color of bulb.

My advice is this...
Because you are using less light, your plants will gain more from max lumens, than from ideal spectrum.
Put more lux on the leaves. Your plants want brightness more than anything in flower.
Get the brightest bulbs your system can handle, and never lower your lumens. Maybe even try to add more light. Some folks say you should double your watts from veg to bloom, but again, you're not growing in an ideal environment, so max out what you can.
