ok, so i'm new to playing guitar. I learned some of the basic chords and now i'm trying to learn an easy song to start out with. (I can't get no) Satisfaction by the rolling stones is supposed to be easy, but i'm still having trouble reading guitar tabs. Here is the tab for the song. I understand that the 2, for example means to play the A (5th string) in the 2nd fret. I'm not sure what the lines (- - -) mean. Does that mean i hold it longer? hit that note more than once? I'm also confused why the letters are above the words? is this whole song played on the 5th string? sorry i'm a n000b! any help would be great. any advice for starters would be sweet as well! thanks everyone

Each letter above a word is the chord you play when you get to that word. The lines are just to help let you know where you are and a little bit for timing, but don't rely on them for that because it's just the rough timing not the actual.

cool, thanks man. the letters got all bunched together on the example above. so you strum that chord until it changes to the next? also for the main riff with the numbers and stuff, what exactly does that mean? the lines --- and stuff like that are throwing me off

Ok, the long horizontal lines made up of smaller ones are the "strings." Obviously, there's 6 of them. The letter on the very very left side is the string it is. The numbers tell you what fret to play at. The farther the numbers are from each other, the longer before you play them.

learn the chords to the song, and if you no the song well in your head then just play by ear, most guitar players play like that and some of the greats dont even know how to read music.
