View Full Version : Are you fascinated about the Universe? - Documentary Video Topic

I try to get a hold of and watch every documentary about the Universe I can find, I'm simply fascinated by it, however my understanding of mathematical physics is poor at best. My gateway to understanding is in documentaries. One of my favorite is Stephen Hawkings six part series Universe. It really does an awesome job of taking people step by step and explaining how we come to know what we know now. It's a good starting point to branch out from and learn more details that have come in the few years since. I watch an episode of it almost every night for the past few years. I found it uploaded on youtube so I'm grouping the episode pieces together for you, here you go.

String Theory/M Theory the current goal of many scientists to prove. It's quite an insane theory and hard to understand, this series below tries. It's pretty decent if a little flashy. If you want to know it better watch this:

well there goes the next however many hours this is alltogether of my life :)

thanks for posting these im sure im gonna watch em all tonight haha. have you ever watched the documentary on the science channel called "The Universe"? they dont really focus on the universe all at once, like theyll have shows about this planet or this one or the sun or galaxies etc. its really cool.

HAHAHAHA the best part of the first one is when stephen says

"my whole life i have been fascinated in finding scientific answers for the universe and black holes, maybe that is why i have more books on the universe than madonna has on sex."

right on these are cool ass vids I seen em on tv a while back M theroy is so exciting and parts have been proven such as the gravity part we only feel the like after effects or ripples of it. however this still does not prove M theroy just helps us understand better. thanks for the vids

black holes are absolutely one of the most fascinating objects in this universe. neutron stars are an honorable mention. imagine the entire 1.5 times the mass of the sun compacted into a space 10 miles wide (the size of manhattan). it's basically a giant neutron. it spins sometimes hundreds of times per second. i just watched a show about them and it said that one tablespoon would weigh about a billion tons. wild stuff.

Yeah, neutron stars are stars that just weren't quite big enough to become black hole when they collapsed on itself, it would be really cool to get a good view of one.

I love our universe, especially the northern lights. Im completely fascinated by them, but really cant find much bout them. Also, did you know that if you look through a hole in a dime, up at the nightsky, you can see thousands of galaxys through that little hole? Its amazing! I love everything about what God gave us to think about. Without nature, where would potheads be? We can become so absorbed in nature its not even funny. One night i sat under the stars just staring up for like 2 hours straight. Its brilliant.

When I watch these myself, I get this sense of amazement and wonder and it makes all the crap that goes on, on our planet all the things we worry about seem so petty and ridiculous. There is so much stuff going on out there every single second, stuff that is happening that we are too far away to even see but is so massive or so intense...I dunno it just makes things like the War in the middle east, gasoline issues all this crap seem so juvenile and petty. You would think an intelligent race could put such issues behind us by now and the human race as a whole could come together and strive for the stars.

Veratyr Star
08-19-2007, 11:57 PM
We could, but our instinct to be the top, the best, the first, the biggest, yadda yadda gets in the way.

Humans are damn smart, but we still lack a lot.

Melkane! Thank you so much for all the videos you posted on youtube and on here. You have really sparked my interest in the universe. I've been watching a lot of documentaries about it recently (mainly ones you've posted) and It's extremely mind expanding. It's crazy to think about how massive the universe is. The farthest view we have of the universe is so far away we see it as it was 78 billion years ago. The possiblility that there is life out there in the huge universe is not unanswered. There must be hundreds of life-forms out there. Hopefully we will make contact with an intelligent one someday.

Oh, and I really like you avatar Melkane. The galaxy is very beautiful.

No problem, I love this stuff myself so sharing is no problem. I have tons more where that came from :)

One correction if I may. I'm not sure where you got 78 Billion from. We can only see back about 12-13 Billion Years and it's estimated the universe is only like 14-15 Billion years old.

Just didn't want you getting the wrong information embedded in your head lol. I'm currently working on getting some more episodes to host. You'll be happy to know I'm not close to done throwing things up for everyone.

I have a 3 part series narrated by Martin Reese that's quite interesting as he goes into things that we still don't know about the universe, from searching for life among the stars (simple and complex) to why we are here and such, to dark matter and other such things. It's quite good.

I'm also breaking up and compiling a single episode regarding dark matter and it's current theories. Later on, perhaps this weekend I have several documentaries about Mars, Saturn and it's moon Titan, as well as Pluto. I have another really good series I'm trying to hunt my disc down is another 3 part series that covers our searching for planets outside our solar system, asteroids and comets and such.

Either things always were or things just became. Both ideas are absolutely mind blowing. If there is a "creator" then where did that creator come from? We've found out that matter can neither be created nor destroyed so I believe things have always been and just transformed through countless reactions.

These videos are awesome Melkane. Thanks for posting!

I am hosting them on youtube. As far as where I got them. Just random torrent sites over the past couple years I'm obviously interested in the subject so I occasionally check torrent sites for any new documentaries in this area. Download them and burn them to discs to watch repeatedly later on. I didn't go to any specific place and many of them I got 1-2 years ago so they may not even be up anymore

I haven't updated this thread in a long time but i have updated my youtube page all the time. I have a tremendous amount of new documentaries to watch. Instead of continously posting new ones here, just go to my channel to see what's new.

Just click on the little underlined playlist button on the top of the page to see the list of all the shows I've uploaded.

Good job on the links Melkane. I'm an astronomy major so it's always good to see others fascinated by the cosmos. :D
