View Full Version : Anyone know about cars?

Alright heres the deal. I own a 92 Honda Accord and it seems to have some kind of engine limiter (governor) and it limits the speed of the car to 120.. Well me being the daring dumbass wants to unlock it. I looked all over on the internet and I came out to find that its a Fuel Shutoff thing that is comming from the Speedo/ECU after it hits 120. I'v read at places you can just make a On/Off switch and put it in front of the speedo and the ecu and it will make you lose power to Cruisecrontrol and make your engine light on but will let you go over 120. Then once you turn it on its back to normal. And I'v also read about performance chips, but I dont have a clue which one to get sence all I really want to do is unlock the fuel shutoff thing. So any input would be appreciated.

I mean dude if its a 92 accord with a small I4 1.8l, it has like 100 horsepower and you arent gonna get much above 120, and you risk permanently damaging the engine if you are going too fast for it to handle.

It'll be fine. I understand your concern, but just give me some idea's =D
If I blow it up oh well. =]

first, as stated above... you aren't gonna get much above 120 anyways... and you're really risking fucking up the car here... i wouldn't fuck with it.... unless you go to a damn race track, you have no reason to be going above 120 anyway.... leave it alone dude..
but if you must, take it to a shop, or get someoen who knows what they're doing.... do it right....
AustinMan

To be honest its not that big of a deal. Most new cars are all unlocked anyways, just happens that all most all early 90's have some type of Limiter.

Also, I just hate having hidden horsepower. =] Its just kinda like a thing. Like when I get it to 120 on the drag strip (straight rode) we have through town their is ALOT left.... and I dont feel right not being able to unleash it. =D

i've never owned a honda accord and dont know what hp they kick out but a 92 i would have thought has lost quite a few horses and you aren't going to get much more than that anyway, if you like old cars which have a bit of kick why dont you get a nissan skyline.
slipknotpsycho
08-05-2007, 05:37 AM
dude any hp you just might gain by taking that thing off would so minimal the only, ONLY way you'd know the diffrence would be to use a computer to analyze it..
it's not gonna get you off the line any faster, and at most, you might get a 10 mph higher top speed....
like i said if you're set on doing this, pay someone to do it right.... that minimal hp and overall top speed is not worth fucking up your car....

08-05-2007, 06:22 AM
dude... just leave it alone... its a 92, chances are, stock motor... (what a little 4 banger) i had a strait 6 front wheel drive, and blew it doing 120... and the govenor hadnt even kicked in yet...
by the way... the only way to add more horse power to your car is after market prefromance parts.... taking off a part that shuts the fuel pump off... at a certian speed is not going to give your car anymore horse power... and chances are, if your racing it... not going to make your car any faster... because rarely have i been in a car when we were on the quarter mile doing over 120... the fastest ive been on the 1/4 mile was 140... in a suped up 2000 6 cylender racing built motor... running every preformance part you could find for that car... running the highest priced... and best quality parts... mitsibich eclispe... because a 1/4 mile dosent give you enogh time to reach speeds over about 125 or 130.... by the time we hit 140... he was slaming the breaks on to keep us from hitting a wall head on doing 140....
i have been faster the 140 though... just not on the 1/4 mile...
also think about this... that little fuel pump shut off is put there for a fucking reason...that swich shuts off the fuel pump in any sort of colison, to prevent the fuel pump dumping gas all over the road(i mean yea sure if you fuck your tank up in the crash, its leaking gas out already... but the fuel pump shuts off the fuel lines so that its not pooring gas into a engine fire or something...

dude you wont gain any hors power you will just get passed 120MPH when a faster car is pushing you down a hill cause a 92 honda is hard to get to 120 in the first place specialy with stock stuff, if your having power poblems it is something eles

My car has 110 horsepower and i have never reached above 120. Fastest I got was just under 120 and after that it felt like it had nothing left to give. Downhill I reckon it could do 130 though.

*giddy type gasp* My dream car!!!! + rep for the Skyline fan. Now that you mentioned that I gotta go change my underwear.
But dude, you're doing good to get that car to 120 in the first place. And a '92 Accord is barely worth working on to make it run at all. My suggestion is to let it be and quit doing 120 before you kill somebody or lose your license. But if you insist, just bypass the governor. No need for toggle switches and all that jazz. And if you really wanna go fast, buy a motorcycle. They'll cause less collateral damage when you crash it.

I believe it's a felony to remove that limiter.. At least in Canada I know you can have your car basically taken from you if your car is found to be altered like that. In fact, street racing in general now .. is illegal and can get your license taken forever.
You can be banned from driving for street racing in Canada now..
I gotta agree though, doing 120+ is pretty reckless and stupid, not to mention ruining the pistons in your engine.
Enjoy!

oh P.S.
That gov. chip is in there not only to limit the speed you can go.. but to prevent permanent damage to your engine.
So you may wanna think twice about doing anything like that to your (or mom's) car.

To excede 120 in that little shitbox ricer is stoopid without putting more money into the car than its worth. Start with a 6 point cage, 5 point harnesses, and Z rated tires. Then you can re-design and build a whole new brake system.... 102mph isn't worth a damn if you can't get it stopped. Now, once you have those little projects out of the way, you need to add some downforce so you don't float off the road into the iceplant at speed.
A firesuit and brain bucket is a real good idea too. Next you gotta figure out what track your going to run that little POS at, because in *MOST* states, if you get caught running 20mph over the limit, they haul your ass off to jail for reckless driving, exhibition of speed, and racing on public streets, then don't count on getting your license back for a number of years.
Now to the drive train.... to keep the engine from having a catistrophic failure, you will need to do around $30,000 of work to the engine an tranny, the least of which is the chip, and laptop to tweak it once you get it on the dyno.
If you got more dollars than sense, then go ahead on with it.... but in stock trim, that 120mph SAFETY SHUTDOWN is there for a reason.
If you insist on trying this stunt, than the brain bucket needs to be really, really small, because you don't have a brain to put in it.
And yes, I used to build and race cars.

glad someone could break it down to him... i knew all this stuff but i'm not into upgrading cars so i wouldn't have been able to explain it right...

and BB i don't think it's illegal to modify/remove that govener in the states, glad canada atleast has some sense...

I dont really like the looks of the Skyline.
I'd rather buy a Accura Integra.
But yeah, I plan on adding alot to this little shit car so its not like this is the only thing Im doing. I plan on putting a new intake on it and new exhaust. Then I could put a performance chip on it.
But yeah, its probably not even worth it but whatever. Its ma shit
Its not like I want to fucking do 150 mph in a little 4 banger I just dont like having my car "capped" its my car and I want that bitch to be able to run like its mine if it ever has too. =]

they sell those damn computer programmer things, brands like hypertech, that does the trick
anyways, you are getting a fuel and spark cut when you hit that certain speed... you can only change it with the computer, honda forums will point you in the right direction a little better.
but dude, i am willing to bet your tires are rated to 80mph, and you will only go 125 downhill anyways.
the cheapest hotrod now a days is a foxbody mustang, pound for pound, and dollar for dollar, the fastest cheap ride around... i lived at the dragstrip, used to caravan with the racers around to all the different races, and tracks... in fact 18-20 i was installing race transmissions for OUTLAW series drag cars... and let me tell you, there is no replacement for displacement... yea your supra has a small turbo engine making lots of power, but what do you think would happen if i built my 5.7 liter motor for a turbo????
you can only go as fast as your hardware man, no matter how bad you want it, you are still limited by your honda ;)

I got my Chevy Impala '01 with the 3.8l V6 about a month and a half ago, and the speedo goes up to 120. im sure thats about where the governor is, but im pretty sure that i could get it up to 135 or 140, its a pretty quick and robust car, and rides real smooth. Does that mean that i want to? no. i like crusing in it. Its a cruising car. And with the size rims i have on it now, even with the Z rated tires, i dont even want to risk fucking up my rims or getting pulled over. I say just keep it how you have it.

and if you get an older ss, make sure it has the 454 big block in it :D

that'd be the nissan 300z i don't really like it.... nissan ain't got shit on a porchse and honestly that seems like what htey were going for... lol (i hate rip offs, when i was younger i hated gmc cuz i thought they were always dick riding chevy.. til i found out they're made by the same exact company when i got older lol)
as for the 911... i got to drive one of those when i was 13.... my uncle worked (and still does) for a BMW dealership, both used and new... it was part of his job anytime they get a new used car in to take it home for the night (since he commuted a good distance) and make sure there was nothing really messed up with it.... he's driven so many diffrent cars.. it's like my wet dream... but he showed up one day in the 911 (white convertible, i prefer black but meh) told me to go look at it.. i was like all drooling over it....
then he holds out the keys and is like here.... i was liike "what.....?" we'll c'mon you gotta learn to drive sometime, might as well be with this car right? "that's not funny don't play with me like that" i'm not.....

the first to listed are the same make and model(except not as big of a lift... we just had the wider tires on it... and the tires were 32's... and the truck wasnt 4 wheel drive... so that would be why there wasnt much of a life on it) of the truck we had to get rid of while i was in jail....
go to 40 seconds,
50 seconds
and this one is the step side...
and 1 minute 7 seconds on this video..

the latter one, is the next veicahal i really hope to buy, me and an old friend commited some felonys and ended up with a truck just like the latter one... it was so nice... it had 40 inch tires on it, with a 4 inch lift...350 small block... it could push trucks the same size as it, while the trcuck it was pushing was in park.... he was a dumb ass... and drove around in it... right by the owners house about 2 times a day for about a month... then one day the owner saw his truck drive by, and the owner jumped in his car, and fallowed him while dialing 911 on his cell phone...
ohh yea... depending on the model, most chevy trucks were built the same from the 70's all the way to the late 80's and on the K-5 blazer, and subrubans they were the same until some time in the 90s

ok i think we's got a parting of ways :wtf:
i don't like ridiculously big... a lift kit is ok... but nothing huge... (i'ma car guy, which means i love speed... i'm a texan which means i have a tendancy to like trucks) big tires are a plus but i'm very particular about my style when it comes to trucks... nothing huge (8 inch lift kit is pushing it, since afterall, trucks have a huge wheel well to work with)
sorta short, but still nice (http://www.caroom.us/images/lift-kit.gif)
ideal (http://www.northerntire.com/Resize_of_143-4328_IMG.JPG)
pushing it but tollerable (http://www.towerhobbies.com/products/tamiya/tamc0196/tamc0196_450.jpg)
getting ridiculous (http://www.oneupoffroad.com/images/575_0015.jpg)
full blown hell no (http://reviews.cnet.com/i/bto/20070111/CES_day1_131_540x404.jpg)

umm getting ridiculous... is about the size i like... but bigger tires... i mean dont get me wrong... i like cars and speed... but i also like trucks and mud holes and hill climbs and rock climbs... and more mud pits... and when you finaly find the right mud pit... some girls mud wrestling... while drinking beer..
edit... i didnt relise the red truck was so damn big...

The lift kits are ok for off road, but I have a couple of questions.... how do you get them into parking garages?? or drive-throughs?? or under overpasses??
How many lateral Gs will they pull on the skidpad?? How quick do they run 0-60?? 1/4 mile time?? Top speed?? Then there is the ever popular.... how many gallons of gasoline to the mile do they burn??
And can somebody explain to me WTF is a "3/4 race cam"??
I understand about thousanths of an inch lift/how many degrees of duration/how many degrees of overlap, but WTF is "3/4 race"???

well were i live at, you dont have parking garges....i dont go threw the drive threw anyways.... and there not that big that they cant go threw a over pass.... dont know what you mean by a skid pad.... the 0-60 isnt much worse then any other 4 wheel drive truck(i mean when your on the high way, its not like your running in 4 wheel drive..)top speed is abot the same as any 4 wheel drive truck.... and gas mileage is a bit worse then a normal 4 wheel drive truck.... but it dont matter... cause the 400 SBC i had in my 2 wheeel drive half ton, didnt get anything better then 10 MPG.... so its not like im expecting a 4 wheel drive truck from the same year with a bigger motor to get any better mileage... there not built for every day drivinng anyways... they are for playing in the mud with... welll what some people do to get better gas mileage, is they have 2 sets of tires, one being the stock sized tires(normaly about 20 inch) and thier mud, or rock climbing tires, wich range from 30- all the way to some place around 53 or 54 incg tires, andthey just use the bigger tires when its time to play, and the smaller tiress when its time for them to go to thier 9-5 job...
