View Full Version : Jay-Z Vs. Lil Wayne
Just curious to get some views on the hov vs weezy debate and to share mine.
I think that they aren't comparable because Jay-Z's lyrics don't make you rewind the track but they make you think and they mean something. When Jay-Z raps he tells a story, and it makes sense and has a message. When Lil Wayne raps its to other peoples beats but he does it well, he's more of a freestyler. Weezy's lyrics rhyme and make you laugh and provide good entertainment but they don't convey a general message.
Short version:
Jay-Z's songs are good and they carry a message.
Lil Wayne's songs rhyme and have good lines but don't have a message.
Anyone else on this topic?

If Lil Wayne had more of a message he'd be close to being as good as Jay-Z....but a verse from "Moment of Clarity" off the black album describes Jays path well "Music business hate me cause the industry ain't make me
Hustlers and boosters embrace me and the music I be makin
I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars
They criticized me for it yet they all yell "HOLLA!"
If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be
lyrically, Talib Kweli
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense
But I did five mill' - I ain't been rhymin like Common since
When your cents got that much in common
And you been hustlin since, your inception
Fuck perception go with what makes sense
Since I know what I'm up against
We as rappers must decide what's most impor-tant
And I can't help the poor if I'm one of them
So I got rich and gave back, to me that's the win/win
So next time you see the homey and his rims spin
Just know my mind is workin just like them...
... rims, that is"

That's a damn good summation and I'd agree...but I'd say Jay has a little of both. Jay definitely has so many one-liners that you go "Ohhhhh shit"...but yeah, not like Wayne tries to do with every line. And Wayne does have one song that comes to mind that is 'message like' with "Fuck The World".
That being said...I'd put Jay as a Top 3 MC of all-time, and arguably numero uno, and Wayne maybe somewhere in 40-50, maybe higher. Just my opinion though.

Lil Wayne doesnt suck...his shit is raw as fuck and u don't listen to the right shit if u think its wack
but Jay is definetly the better lyricist and he can deliver moving messages through his music

the better question is who is better to listen to when your high???
lil wayne hands down. jay-z is boring to listen to if your high. while lil wayne fully entertains you, plus he is high all the time so its like he understands what u want to listen to.
Wayne's rhymes make u skip the deck and go back, you hear it and your like OH SHITTT you go back and listen to it again and again. HOV you get it, you don't rewind, but you think. I think Wayne is better to listen to when high, and yeah Wayne is a lyrical beast he would tear down anyone on the spot in a freestyle but in a contest where you gotta write a song that actually has a message and at least 90% of it has to make sense, Jay-Z owns Wayne easy. Overall they are two different types of rappers, and Jay-Z is more than a rapper, he's a legend. Wayne's a legend in the making. That's all there is to it.
I think Wayne's best piece is Something You Forgot. Here are some of the lyrics from it:
Pain, since I've lost you, I'm lost too
***** feelin' like he at the bottom like a horse shoe
Sorry for the trouble that I put you and your heart through
God knows that I'd do anything for a part two, or to
be prayin' for the day you come back to me,
sayin' that you forgive me
Give me another chance, I'm needin' it like a kidney
I don't wanna advance, give me back her hands
Give me back her touch, I don't ask for much
but I fucked up, I know I fucked up, I admit I fucked up
but everybody fuck up, now this other ***** lucked up
Tellin' me and my clique don't give a fuck
Cause um, we from New Orleans, she was from Georgia
She was my down chick, I was her soldier
I was her gangsta, she was my shoulder
You were the pistol to my holster .. BANG!
YouTube - Lil Wayne-Something You Forgot (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PcN0uu5ZH7s)
There's a link to Something You Forgot, that was the first verse I put up there, and the other 2 verses get better. If you like Wayne, hell even if you don't like him (you will after this song), listen to it. It's got tons of crazy lines, and they all make sense, and the song has a general theme of missing a once-loved one. This song really does it for me when I'm baked, hope it does the same for all of you too.
lil wayne hasnt accomplished half of what jay-z has

Jay-Z is also 37, Weezy is 24. There's no denying that Jay-Z is a legend, but I think Lil Wayne is better on all fields. Just listen to Tha Carter 3

Heres my thoughts,
Lil Wayne is a beast with his lyrics, his flow is sick. Everything just flows in his rhymes but sometimes it doesnt make sense. Hez a "commercial rapper" WEezy is funny as hell. Way more Fly than YOu" Is a sick song. Weezy puts out so much, does this dude ever take a break from rappIN? CASH MONEY IS THE SHIT
Jay has meaning in his raps, and you can tell hez more mature than wayne. Hes been in the game forever. His beats are sick and sound more old school.
BOTH THESE *****S ARE BOZZ

wayne's been in the game since he was 12 and now he is just in his early 20's and is one of the best in the game. when he quits he will defenetly be a legend. period.....

im wondering how that is, i would be willing to say hes come out with more mixtapes and more slumpers than jay z, Jay z is old but a legend weezy is young and almost a LEGEND just wait for carter 3 to come out and he will be a legend

08-06-2007, 06:36 PM
lil wayne sucks, Jay Z tears him apart. I'll put Jay Z as a great, but not a legend. Because despite his commercial success his impact isnā??t like those that legends make. Run DMC, they are legends because without them there would be no hip hop, or at least not nearly as popular as it is now. Rakim, no one can match him on the mic and he changed the style of hiphop with is complex lyrics. NWA changed the game because they said shit on a record that was never heard of before. Public Enemy did too, but not like NWA did. There was little to no controversies in rap pre-NWA. He has good lyrics but not outstanding and for lil wayne, his lyrics are complete shit, a lot of people compliment his flow, but theres a difference between flow and lyrics. Lil wayne only appeals to those who donā??t bother to look back at the older rappers. Back in the day you needed talent to make it in rap and lil wayne is a prime example that talent isnā??t needed anymore. I know lil wayne has been in it since ā??92, but he raps like he just started. If you think that he can kill anyone in a freestyle line him up with Big Daddy Kane and see what happens. Album sales donā??t make you great. No rapper has sold more albums than 2Pac, but many agree heā??s not the best of all time. Iā??ve judged this off the songs that lil wayne fans have recommended. Fireman was some of the most retarded shit of all time.

they are both good, as far as all the people hating on weezy, hes 24 and has accomplished more then jay did at that time. listen to the carter III or lilweezyana or da drought 3
They tell me don't get high, and not to try to make a living,
I tell them I'm a hustler and I'd rather make a killing
My eyes is so wide as he watching the skillet,
I let my bitch bag it, if she steal it, I'm gonna kill her,
I bulletproof the ride, now I feel like armadillas,
And fuck you, hospital, young money, we're the illest,
And I ain't gotta lie when I tell you I'm the illest,
My flow is nasty, like C Y Phyllis,
Self made G, and them bitches know the business.
Relying on rap, but in the kitchen I'm a chemist,
And when I was 5, my favorite movie was "The Gremlins"
Ain't got shit to do with this, but I just thought that I should mention,
You looking for devine and the little intervention,
And them birds don't fly, without my permission,
I'm probably in the sky, flying with the fishes,
Or maybe in the ocean, swimming with the pigeons,
See my world is different,
Like Dwayne Wayne,
And if you want trouble, bitch, I want the same thing,
And you know that I'm gonna ride with my motherfucking *****s,
Most likely I'mma die with my finger on the trigger,
Don't worry bout mine, I'mma grind till I get it
And tell all of my *****s that the sky is the limit,
The sky is the limit,
The sky is the limit,
And tell all of my *****s that the sky is the limit
'Cause the sky is the limit,
The sky is the limit,
And if you look high, you see that I'm gonna be in it
The sky is the limit

jay z hands down.. lil wayne is a gay ass name to begin with. and im definately not into modern rap. underground east coast is where the shit is.
da graveyard anyone? in my opinion has one of jayzs sickest raps ever.
**The way I rock
No way you could stop
I shock pop and drop when Jay gets hot
When I'm in the zone better hold ya own
Cause I like to break when I finish a poem
Pound for p-p-pound the best around
No way you can get up when I get down
I shake rattle and roll and wreck shit like none
And beat a ni**as ass half silly on da one
Fuckin' A fuckin' Jay ill with skill
So ladies step up I get around like a wheel
I'm never chokin' off chronic skills are bonic
Bitches will treat me like Onyx
Respect that I'll peel a punks cap back and sign it
Creep through your block fuck a glock I step
Through your neighborhood armed with nothing but a rep
I'm giving these ladies something they can feel cause I'm real
Ya man get outta line and it's kill kill kill**

damn man you can really tell that some of you just starting listening to hip hop in the past few yrs
how is this even a debatable topic??? When lil wayne drops something even remotely close to a reasonable doubt or blueprint then maybe there is a conversation. what about releasing an album every year for 8 straight yrs?! none of which being below 3.5 mics
where is lil waynes dead presidents, cashmere thoughts, politics as usual, heart of the city, allure, where have you been, dynasty intro etc etc etc
What about holding your own (some say even winning) in a battle against the best lyricist of all time? Has Wayne been in a beef like that yet?!?
I can see a few of the people in this thread will echo the above but as for the rest of you...get some perspective of classic albums and changing the game and show some respect...a top 10 of all time w/o hov loses all credibility (damn near a top 5) Stop judging off kingdom come and go back and listen to hovs whole catelogue.
Lil Wayne isn't even a top 30 current mc...wake up ppl
I didn't even want to post but just seeing that this is the future generation is scary. Lil Wayne has a loooong way to go to even be in this category.

I'm pretty sure this thread was about discussing their styles, not about being bias and saying who you like better is the better MC of the two LOL.
damn man you can really tell that some of you just starting listening to hip hop in the past few yrs
Yeah man, that 100% sums it up. If you even put Wayne in the Top 50 MC's of all time, you don't know much [if anything] about hip-hop, and I guarantee you are under 15 years old. It's not about opinion anymore, you are clearly being bias, because you didn't grow up in the golden age of hip-hop. I feel so bad for these kids nowadays listening to this garbage hip-hop music. It's shit like Lil Wayne that gives hip-hop a bad rep. He does make me laugh though...but I'm pretty sure those weren't his intentions haha. I do agree he is better than a lot of shit out these days, but that isn't saying much.
how is this even a debatable topic???
It's really not. Jay = Top 1-5. Wayne = Top 50-100.

I am not a fan of little Wayne but i am defiantly not a fan of jay-z he is accused(i use this word cause am not 100% sure) of stealing some of his line from biggie. The song he did with Ermine "reneged"(Sp) is an example of one song that i remeber that was on the track....
there is a song about this where they spit a jay-z verse then it is fallow by the artist who he "stole" it from..most of them where biggie
has any one ever heard this song i think it was produce by dip set for some reason i can remeber....

The song's name is Renegade, and Eminem destroyed Jay-z on his own track. Just like Eminem destroyed T.I. in Touchdown.

"I'm not a biter, I'm a writer for myself and others...I say a Big line, I'm only biggin' up my brother."
It's called respect for a close friend that has passed.
And while Em was ridiculous on that track, Jay definitely had some fire as well...regardless of what Nas said haha. They both killed it, but Em turned it up a notch.

well if he was really giving respect to biggie it would be a commonly known fact that he used biggie line but its not. id say 90% of the people where am from don't know that so how can he be giving biggie respect

lol aight man, I consider myself a mid 90's, east coast kinda dude but I'm as big a fan of Weezy as anyone, ever since tha carter 2. That said...what classic shit has weezy dropped? What tracks will you be bumpin in 10 years? Hell, I barely listen to anything he dropped 10 months ago because he's constantly puttin out new shit. Until wayne puts out something classic, this isn't even a real debate. Tha Carter 2 was a great album but a track like 'shooter' doesnt compare to "Dead presidents" or "can't knock the hustle"... I don't think anything Waynes done can even compare to Hov's second best album (Blueprint), let alone the classic debut
LOL as for this swagger jackin business...lol if you actually listen to the biggie lines that Jay's been accused of stealing, they aren't some obscure lines...they're lines that any true hiphop head knows by heart. Why would Jay-z "steal" lines that are already classics that everyone knows? Answer; because he isn't stealing them....its a cross between homage and cultural reference which hiphop's been full of since the beginning.
When it comes to flow, swagger and creativity, Lil Wayne is probably one of the top 5 rappers out there right now,.... Jay-z is a top 5 rapper ALL TIME
thats the difference

you cant base what you think of jayz off what you hear on the radio, big pimpin was a decent song but his underground shit is amazing. talking da grave yard or 7 minute freestyle.
on that note, i think jay z has nothing compared to big L, biggie, ditc, ed o.g. or any east coast undeground groups.

yea I was lit off my ass during my last post, surprised I could function my computer
anyways, law school is about to get going again so I won't be posting too frequently but the point of my last post was to mention how illmatic was my no 1 all time album and only built for cuban linx was 2...prolly have hell on earth (I know infamous is more popular), ready to die and 7 day theory to round out the top 5...illadelph halflife, reasonable doubt, me against the world, follow the leader and one other (maybe daddy kane, nwa or someone) for the rest of my top 10
my point was that even if you love wayne you should take the time out to check some of the 90s era music because there was an insane amount of legendary records produced (especially btw/94-96) I myself didn't fully appreciate alot of this music until years after it was released.
Would also like to mention that for any of the new generations looking to "hang their hat" on a rapper from this era (maybe realize that weezy isn't even at the top of his class, I know shocking), my top 2 so far this decade are no.1 Lupe Fiasco and no.2 Joe Budden. I know alot of ppl attach Lupe to a skateboard rapper but his double (and even triple) metaphors are so ridiculous that it was said about his first album and I quote "similiar to nas' illmatic, lupe is so far ahead of his time that it will take the majority of current listeners years to catch on". For example, in the track Failure, Lupe says "had to get my walk to properly explain my talk/cuz this lack in talk had my walk lookin off/ now im over the limp, watch how they mugs drop when they see my verbals able (thats the usual)/ when I was PO/ I was LO/ now me and my CHAPS rock PURPLE LABEL"
-if you see the usual suspects (hence the words thats the usual) there was a character named verbal who walked with a limp and when found out about the cop dropped his mug...plus the polo, chaps, purple label clothing 'phor
as for budden...check out mood musik 1 and 2 if you havent, they are classic mixtapes...or just see dumb out (2006 track of the yr by far), 3 sides to a story (maybe top 5 storytelling track of all time-great when stoned), 10 minutes and if i die tmrw to get a feel
dont smoke during school so this board will serve as little purpose to me but will check back b/c I like to see how the conversation will evolve...stay light up peoples

we posted at similiar times I guess b/c I didnt see this post. And no smoking doesn't make me retarded at all but I was out enjoying life and having a few drinks, came home and burned an L with my neighbor while surfing the net, came upon this site while cuban linx was playing and felt the urge to post hence the spelling to mistakes (liqs + kush = typos). To infer that my spelling mistakes were somehow to imply that your weed was inferior is not only a ridiculous assertion but one only a severly paranoid person would make as I said nothing about your trees.
The golden era of rap was 1994-1996, that is what it is called my friend. In 1996 with the release of RD Jay brought on the bling bling rap which is still prevelant today. No one is saying you can't enjoy your rap today, it's great that people love the culture and have different tastes, that is fine. The problem is that sales are rapidly declining and the artists that are selling are increasingly less talented since 2003 and the suburban obsession with 50 Cent. We see our favorites (The Roots, Meth, Ghost twice) releasing superb albums in 06 and get not even a listen from this new generation, it scares us.
All I, and most heads, ask is that the future generation spend the time to listen to what built the culture (I mean for god sakes, the music is fuckin free now). It isn't like I'm arguing that George Mikan is better than Shaq, I am referring rappers who made their debut 10-15 years ago. Just go back and listen to the classics, they aren't dated and will give you a basis point for why these current rappers are even able to make a living (albeit a fading one due to current industry standards)

Anyone else on this topic?
I don't like either, as there are better rappers that possess the best of both worlds as far as message and rhyme go (Z-Ro, Trae, Big Hawk, many other people from the Screwed Up Click) but the more I like out of the two, would probably be Jay-Z mostly because he's starting to give back to the community now.
