I'd PM you to discuss it, but since that isn't an option, and not wanting to hijack a thread, I'll make my own.

"Everything we do, everything we are, rests on our personal power. If we have enough of it, one word uttered to us might be sufficient to change the course of our lives. But if we don't have enough personal power, the most magnificent piece of wisdom can be revealed to us and that revelation won't make a damn bit of difference." Don Juan Matus - Tales of Power

I'm just not convinced that personal power is the ability to change our lives from a single word. perhaps you can explain to me why you use this quote in your signature. thanks :)

*I'll tell you the origin of mine, it's a cool song that i like :D

He's an up and coming angel.

You have to understand reality before you can understand why someone would quote Don Juan, because Don Juan doesn't have patience for failure. In the world of spiritual power, there is no try, only do.

Today's your lucky day: The Art of Dreaming (http://prismagems.com/castaneda/donjuan9.html)
The 8 Circuit Model (http://deoxy.org/8brains.htm#chat)

You can thank me in 4 years :D

I would agree with Don Jaun Matus' words. Of course, it's a generalized statement but I've attained many insights to my personal world and none of them have granted me the ability to actually perform or improve. It's as if these revelations I achieve only limit me even more. However, I cannot agree that ignorance is bliss-we must certainly overlook a lot of things in this world, if we want to get along.

You can thank me in 4 years :DFrom what I've read, Don Juan Matus is a fictional character, so I'm failing to see how he can be an angel, or how he can have patience. If I've looked up the wrong don juan matus, please let me know.

A mans words shouldnt be any more or less important in ones mind just becuase of their stature or status in this world.

A poor man on the street who does crack every day can have just as much wisdom in his words as the Buddhist monk who spent his entire life devoted to his religion.

The key is to be able to look past the person, and look at the message. Letting who the person is taint their words for good or bad negates whatever that person might have ever been trying to show.

People should make better use of the language. Most of those pearls of wisdom people share are open to further scrutiny, regardless of the stature of the person who said them, simply because wisdom goes a long way.

I disagree with the quote, which is why I'm asking :p

So you don't agree with the message? What're you getting at HN?

I'm just confused as to how being told one word and changing your entire life is attributed to personal power. To me, it sounds more like gullibility and perhaps ignorance.

Yeah, I suppose I wasn't the one to ask. Let it be heard though. There's a thread floating around here that discusses the usage of quotes and why people are attracted to particular quotes. You perceive the "gullibility" and "ignorance" in those words, and who knows? Maybe so does Coelho? And then the quote and the person bond in sticky word sex.

Maybe Coelho does interpret the quote as I do, but there's only one way to find out...

COELHO!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU???!!

Im here! My PC had some problems (ive lost my power source, motherboard and two HD's), so only wednesday i could fix them all.

And let me say... i deeply moved right now... this is the first thread with my name in it... :sadcrying :p :D

Well... i will quote the part of the book from where that quote was taken. Castaneda had said that he had recieved letters from people saying that was wrong to publish books about the teachings of don Juan, and that oriental masters demanded complete secret about their teachings. So, don Juan answered:

"You say you've heard that the masters of Eastern esoteric doctrines demand absolute secrecy about their teachings. Perhaps those masters are just indulging in being masters. I'm not a master, I'm only a warrior. So I really don't know what a master feels like.

It doesn't matter what one reveals or what one keeps to oneself. Everything we do, everything we are, rests on our personal power. If we have enough of it, one word uttered to us might be sufficient to change the course of our lives. But if we don't have enough personal power, the most magnificent piece of wisdom can be revealed to us and that revelation won't make a damn bit of difference.

I'm going to utter perhaps the greatest piece of knowledge anyone can voice. Let me see what you can do with it. Do you know that at this very moment you are surrounded by eternity? And do you know that you can use that eternity, if you so desire?

There! Eternity is there! All around! Do you know that you can extend yourself forever in any of the directions I have pointed to? Do you know that one moment can be eternity? This is not a riddle; it's a fact, but only if you mount that moment and use it to take the totality of yourself forever in any direction.

You didn't have this knowledge before, now you do. I have revealed it to you, but it doesn't make a bit of difference, because you don't have enough personal power to utilize my revelation. Yet if you did have enough power, my words alone would serve as the means for you to round up the totality of yourself and to get the crucial part of it out of the boundaries in which it is contained."

Don Juan poked my chest lightly with his fingers, and said:
"This are the limits i mean [our body]. One can get out of those boundaries. We are a feeling, an awareness encased here.
We are luminous beings and for a luminous being only personal power matters."

What don Juan call personal power is everything we have that give us power to do things. So, knowledge is power, as it allows we to do things we couldnt if we hadnt knowledge, strenght is power, and so.
In the case of my signature, i think don Juan is talking about knowledge.

For example, if you give a book of pharmaceutics for a doctor, he can make a medicine, but if you give the same book for a engineer, for example, he may read it, but will not make any difference for him, cause he dont have the knowledge needed to use the informations in the book.

I hope i had explained my point... if not, feel free to ask.
One strange coincidence is that today i was reading this book, exactly at this chapter, then did read the quote that is my signature, and started to wonder how i could explain it for somebody, if needed. And just some hours after it, i arrive here at cann.com and find this thread... "ohh... it makes me wonder..."

And, again, im still moved by the thread with my name in it...
