You remind me a lot of me when I started playing guitar. I think you have the basis of a good guitar player. You have a few timing issues, you should start playing along to backing tracks or a metronome to correct this. I used to be exactly the same. Timing is one of the most important things, its makes it really uneasy to listen to when its out of time. Also it doesnt sound like you are playing in key all the time, they are some notes that sound like they dont belong. Try to put more melody into things. I dont mean to sound too harsh I am just trying to offer you some constructive criticism.

But as I said I think you are on the right path in some ways and just need a little bit of guidance to stay on it. If you want more info about keys and tonality just let me know. They are like a foreign language at first but once you have got it, its easy.

yeah im not into all that music theory but i could use some info about key because it is difficult for me to play along with other musicians sometimes. plus i don't have the greatest rhythm on earth. i don't get all the notes in the right place and my sense of timing is off, thanks for the constructive critisism

I never used to be either, just because it seemed too hard to learn. A good musician already has an understanding of theory they just dont realise it. I can hear it in your playing. Once you learn theory you feel like JS Bach, lol. I too dont have the greatest natural rhythm in the world (you should see me dance) but I have worked on it and now I think that my rhythm is very good.

of course i appreciate soul music. its music from the heart. music serving as the voice of the soul. i agree that soul music is the only type of music anyone should make because it simply means being THEM and nothing more. no genre restriction, just THEM on a silver platter, take it or leave it. thats what i do, i dont restrict myself to blues, or rock, i play MATT rodriguez, for me and only me, and if people want to listen then great.

I love you man.

How old are you?

Im so glad you can recognize this so early in your life. A lot of young people don't understand..

Im not trying to say i'm old or anything. Im just 19...but I understand too. Its like Kurt Cobaine man....

All his lyrics and chords and voice were...was music that he wrote and felt not to entertain, not to perform, not to impress...just to express him self....

I saw an interview where he said "the most embarassing thing is when people come up to you and praise you like you're a god"

but hes SO pure in music that, this "soul music" talk isnt an understanding to him...he just lives it and doesnt know any other kind of music....

so, to him...its normal...and even SIMPLE!

but to others....that have been blinded by music becoming a type of fucking fashion

its incredible

haha man, IM YOUR SAME AGE HAHA, just turned 19 on the 28th of june man. dude you are PERFECTLY in line with my views about music man. i see you as identical to what i believe. i agree with everything you just said. people may have called kurt GRUNGE, but he CREATED GRUNGE. grunge genre = kurt Cobain. funny thing was is that people started copying him and failing. he wasn't playing GRUNGE, he was playing KURT COBAIN (soul music) and he was just expressing himself. not attempting to entertain such as bands like panic at the disco.

Exactly dude.

hahaha yeah panic at the disco

it kinda sucks thinking this way sometimes...I criticize a lot of the music my girlfriend listens to lol....Im trying to keep my thoughts to myself now though.

But yeah man...I agree...no one can ever ever immitate a soul musician because it defines them. One word will never have the definition of another word no matter how hard it tries...

you are a genius my man. and NO it does not suck thinking this way because WE KNOW THE TRUTH. soul musicians are the only Real Musicians out there. I'm a soul musician and so are you. our technical ability might not have caught up with our vision but it will someday and you and i will both be great soulful players thanks to our focus on EXPRESSION rather then SOUNDING GOOD TO OTHERS.
