View Full Version : Question?
Do you have to be 18 to cash a check written in your name. I'm only 16 and I sold a few things online and i'm receiving payment by check for an item and I want to cash it myself, so I don't have to hassle my parents...
So do you have to be 18?

I don't think so, but I'm not an expert on these kinds of things... If your under 18 with only a custodial accont then they may require the legal guardian of the account to be present.

I think you have to have an account to cash a check unless it's like a paycheck (then you can cash it at the bank it was issued from). Not sure though.

Go to Wal-Mart, they'll cash it for a small fee.

Usually as long as they have some form of ID, at least the retailers and bankers around here, you should be good to go. My son got gift checks at birthdays and Christmas long before he was 18 and never had a problem.

could have your parents add you onto their bank account, and cash it there for free....
anywhere else you're gonna have to pay to do so.... (setting up your own bank account isn't really worth it to cash one single check)
just as long as you have state id (i think school id's can work too for soem places) but no yo udon't have to be 18
