I just don't understand this....
A very close member of my family died in tragic circumstances a while back, and due to circumstances (he died a hero), it was subsequently all over the news... the trashy, shitty fuckin tabloid newspapers published lies... Downright fucking LIES, that include the rest of us aswell... even the 'respectable' papers are at it, or leaving bits of information out to make it sound more 'interesting' or 'exciting'... Now, I know that reporters have a job to do, and that the papers are there to first make $$$ then report truth, but, if people buy them they must enjoy reading this shit....
Are they just ignorant to the fact that it's lies or twisted information or do they just like making a good story out of other people's pain?
I just don't know.... nor can I understand...

Its true. Most people lead such pathetic boring lives that the only way to get any excitement is to read about or see it in the news. Why do people slow down to look at bad accident scenes?

Better yet, go read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand... it's SPECTACULARLY damning of a society that enjoys a voyeuristic view into the suffering of others, and a downright amazing piece of Western literature to boot.

I'm really sorry that your family is victim to this. It's so common. I see news stories and take only the barest facts from them. I also went through some slander from a local paper who, after my arrest, got wind of a VERY interesting police report and decided (without interviewing me or the other witness) to smear my name so badly that for months I took shit at local restaurants where they know me. At least the people making fun of me knew that the story was untrue, but it still hurt pretty bad.

I'm sure your situation is so much worse not even to bear comparison. All you can hope for is that in time, people will forget. In the meantime, go ahead and write a letter to the editor.

If their so-called "facts" are fiction, some reporter needs to answer for it.

It's nigh on impossible to win a slander suit against a newspaper with the financial resources of an average person.
The best you can hope for is to get your letter to the editor published and make the newspaper eat a bit of crow.
With a recent death in your family, perhaps simply that small bit of closure will give everyone a lot more peace.
