They are decent size hits. I think maybe you wouldnt have this feeling if you didnt keep the lighter on as long. You only have to light for 2 seconds max, once its lit, its lit. Then while you are hitting just give it a little blast with the lighter to help it along. Keeping the lighter on as long as you did just means more heat, more butane and other chemicals. Making your hit harsher. Im not trying to preach, just give it a go and see how it feels.
