View Full Version : when did Sex become Taboo?

I was thinking the other day how hushed-up sex is these days. I was thinking about a couple celebrities and their now-well-known sex tapes, and it just got me thinking.... Does anyone remember a time when our ancestors didn't care how they fucked? When they lived in big holes in the sides of mountains that weren't really equipped with a four-post beds and locked doors?
Animals don't care... granted we are of a higher intelligence than them, thus more complex, so we of course are going to have some of our own absurdities...
But sex is the one thing that binds the human race together! It's the one thing we know we all do! It's how we were created, we are all just walking results of orgasms.
So why why WHY is sex so hushed? Sex, nudity, etc... We don't like people to see us naked, we don't like people to see us, hear us, watch us, think about us having sex... WHY?

When we as a species became self-conscious.
Don't we have a serpent to blame for this? :D

In the Roman Empire, BC, sex was pretty open....
My answer is that sex became taboo in the western world with the rise of Christianity. Yes, I blame that for the sexual repression of the western world.
Sex is a basic animalistic function like eating and sleeping; it is what we all want and need. Society, however, has artificially romanticized it, made it either dirty and filthy, which isn't true, or only between people who love each other, which also isn't true. It is for two people who are horny.

Haha that sounds like crazy talk, but that actually would be a nice protest against the influx of religion into government and law, and the taboo of sex...a huge orgy in the town square lol.

Sigh...I have a tendency to get on a soapbox about this...
The whole western "sex hangup" traces its roots to Judeo-Christian ideology of sex as "original sin": that sex was a reliving of the Fall of Adam and to be born of the sex act was your first strike against you in this world. From this, sex was something shameful and only to be engaged in when absolutely neccesary to propagate the species. Same sex relations were sinful in that they were pointless, in the sense of propogation (note that this implies masturbation and post-menopausal sex are ALSO "wrong," but currently noone is up in arms about that).
We've moved away from that a bit, but still sex is viewed a base instinct and sexual love is widely perceived as inferior to romantic/intellectual love, rather than being complementary to each other.
I generally try not to use "make love" as euphamism for fucking: a couple usually have a good idea of the presence or lack therof of love in a relationship; to me, the term implies a discomfort with the concept. P.J. O'Rourke, in his hippie days, did a funny interveiw with an "Adult":
P.J. "So, do you fuck?"
Adult: "we engage in sexual intercourse."
P.J. "So you talk about fucking?"
The thing that frosts me is that there is a "neo-prudist" element to feminism (yes I know it's not universal) that pushes hard against things such as porn. That's a shame in that, frankly, they could probably do a lot to improve porn. The whole "lie there, moan occasionally, and wait for your facial" bit is tiresome, IMO, and it'd be a treat to see an aggressive, slightly angry, yet feminine sexuality portrayed. Plus an end to the whole needing to see a sexually adventurous woman as "dirty": to me, that just says you delight in what moralizers detest, but you haven't changed the paradigm one bit.
And yes this is my first "real" post here because I'm horny right now...

Seriously though, the ability to procreate without God's help= a sin. Seems a bit perverse though for God to have created beings CAPABLE of reproduction, without wishing them to use it (although 'go forth and multiply' reverses this later).

:D Er, wait, maybe that shouldn't be so funny to me.
I think sex is only really taboo in North America, the continent colonized by prudes. From birth we're raised to think that sex and nudity is dirty and ought not to be talked about. It's a natural thing though, and it is a great idea to talk about it, just like it's a great idea to talk about our beloved ganja - it stirs up new ideas and keeps us better informed about what's what. I can't believe there are some states wanting to ban Sex Education classes in high school - the kids are going to fuck anyways, they might as well know how to go about it safely.
I personally don't like talking about sex because A) I haven't had any, and I feel shitty and left out when it comes up - kind of like if I was hanging out with a non-smoker and started talking about marijuana, they'd feel left in the dark - and B) although it is natural, everyone takes a shit as well and I don't feel like talking about that either.
I think that a lot of the under-25 crowd are open about their sex lives, it's just their parents, and subsequently the media, who are not.

You can thank the Christian Right for that one.
Aren't they dandy?

Yeah, most of my Social Group and closer friends are very open about it, and most of us are close enough that were all Friends with Benefits as it were (Benefits as in: Oral, Casual sex, Makeouts, etc) with no real strings attached.
But on a whole its taboo to the general population, at least of America, because of the Christian Right.
Who says it's taboo? I thought Americans were generally accepting of sex. Aren't we? I sense it all over the place, maybe not with my nose :( . Then again, I have noticed an eerie silence grow over a crowd in a movie theater when sex is introduced to the screen. That could just be everyone secretly fantasizing about getting some though?
