Hi everyone, i was referred to this message board by a friend who said there were very knowledgeable people out here regarding MMJ. I need some advice on if/how i can treat insomnia with mmj instead of taking pharmaceutical medicine (which i currently use to treat my sleep issues).
Currently I have a prescription to take Ambien. I take it for my insomnia which seems to be the result of mild anxiety disorder. My anxiety attacks cause pretty bad insomnia. When I am experiencing the anxiety attacks i pretty much can't sleep at all. This causes me to be a major dud at work and basically under-perform at my job computer programming. In fact my employer already told me that I need to improve my shit or risk termination.
So for the last year I have been taking Ambien to help get sleep. The problem with Ambien is that i hate taking this chemical. It leaves my mouth tasting funny (metallic) and also seems to cause me to have a hard time getting up and full of energy in the morning. I am not usually on my game until mid-day and i drink a shit load of coffee to keep going.
This is really not working for me and the shitty thing is that I know there is an alternative treatment that helps me. When I smoke up (or eat brownies) I can almost always get to sleep and the high usually helps with the anxiety itself.
I would really like to be able to join a club in SF and get something for my insomnia, but the few people Iā??ve asked about the subject have told me that insomnia is not serious enough illness to warrant the use of MMJ.
When i told my doctor that smoking helps me sleep and the anxiety he told me to quit smoking and that it was not a legitimate treatment. So my doctor does not believe in MMJ and would never provide me a written recommendation for it. I don't really know what else i can do to convince him to help me, help myself.
Does anyone out there use MMJ for insomnia or mild anxiety disorder? Do I have any chance of being approved to use MMJ, or am I basically left to finding miscellaneous hook-ups off the street when i can? From time to time I get smoke off the "street", but I hate doing it for all the typical reasons: (quality, safety, price, atmosphere and community).
Any advice or help from the community? Iā??d love to stop taking these pharma-chemicals and instead rely on natureā??s bounty to help me get some sleep.
Thanks,
rollo

Try doing a search here, at marijuana.com...overgrow.com...marihemp.com...etc. I'm sure people will recommend Indica strains...goodluck

since your doctor does not recommend mj they you should find another doctor! i dont have a prescription, but my friend up north does, he lives in northern california, he says all you need to get one up there is a reason, insomnia and like $100 for the processing fee. The down side is you have to go up north to find those doctors theres not many in so cal, go to humbolt county, or oakland. but after that you can grow your own and save money and you wont be buying of the street! hope that helped

I also think its fucking disgusting that the doctor would rather you take chemicals that probably cause brainnnnn-tumors over a natural herb with no negative side-effects (if not smoked)

Many doctors take bribes (not actual bribes, but free gifts, First Class flights, etc) from differnt pharmacutical companies. This is supposed to persuade them to prescribe the drugs from these companies (ever noticed why so many doctors have calenders, pens, and stuff, all with names of drugs or drug companies on them?). Not all doctors pay any attention to this, but some do. So if you go to your doctor and he refuses to prescribe an alternative to the drug he already prescribed, then it is a very good idea to find yourself another doctor - not just for this matter, but a long-term doctor. You should always try and find an unbiased doctor, who wont try and prescribe stuff to you just because he got a cool gift from a drug-company, and one that will always be open to alternative treatments, such as MJ.
As for your Insomnia and anxiety.. I have no clue. Some people, such as myself, find that they cant get to sleep without smoking. I cant sleep for more than 2 hours without having smoked before-hand. Other people find that smoking alot actually causes Insomnia. My best advice is to smoke in moderation, ie, before you go to sleep. Try not to smoke too much, as this could worsen your problems. Also, smoking too much could worsen your anxiety as it speeds up your blood-rate.
Good luck :)

i can only speak for me
it helps my sleep,i been Rx'd seroquel for sleep ,they will make me sleep but i dont like the feeling they make me have like heavy heavy legs as if they wiegh twice as much they should and groggy headed the next day
its like my last resort to get few hours rest
mostly
i only use them after a few days without weed becuase a jiont will allow me to sleep and actually rest thru a night,(i rarely sleep over 4hrs)
drug induced coma is only way i sleep 8 hrs,and that aint too healthy for me
a nice jiont helps my appetite and eases some pian,
i cant take pain meds often becuase of ulcers and kidney stones so its safest for me to smoke weed than take the meds the docs would give me if i would just go on letting them,I see them only when i must, and its always same shit
have shot of this,
few these for later
here is Rx for some tabs
thanks come agian.
my anxiety is helped by weed but ive known some folks to get panic attacks and blame it on the weed cuase they had just smoked,
not saying it cant give one
it probly can certian people ,
everyone aint the same chemical machine, and docs go by the majority rule
only you can tell if weed can help your anxiety
legal or not im smoking it cuase it helps me
peace

Sorry for your lack of sleep, nothing makes you feel out of "yourself' then a lack of restful sleep and REM. Cannabis has been documented, Herrer's Emperor wears no Clothes, etc., to treat both insomnia and anxiety atttacks, although among a small % of people Cannabis actually causes anxiety attacks. I would say for both ailments to find a strong organic Northern Lights or Hashplant, or other Indica. Sativas can have the potential of causing heart rate acceleration and paronia which wouldn't be what you are looking for. Take a small inhaled hit and then wait 10 minutes, take another hit and then sit quietly listening to some quiet music that you really like. Many people trying herb for the first time are done a disservice by old timers who have them smoke too much the first time and then get them stone sick. Take deep breathes afterwards until you take that deeep breath that causes you to go into relaxed breathing, we all know the sensation like after you sigh. As you get used to the sensations the effects will change, or rather your perception of it, and yet the theraputic effects will remain. Cannabis is unusual in that for those who use it continuosly, like for pain management, find that the theraputic effects remain though a tolerance builds up to the high itself.
If you don't want to smoke or looking for slower longer effects than making brownies would be the solution.
All the Best

Marijuana in lower doses will help you with insomnia. Higher doses may keep you awake.
You could also try meditation, which naturally raises melotonin levels in your brain.
