Anyone else experience this? I'm not proud of it, but whenever I see anyone dressed in gangsta clothing, taking a picture with the "gangsta pose", saying thinks like "mah peeps", etc., I just want to yell at them!

I mean, they think they're soooo cool, but it's really almost amusingly pathetic.

(Btw, that pose with the fingers is commonly done and it is not that that bugs me, but when it is accompanied by the stone-hard look as well...)

yes. sometimes it's(the pose) funny with friends but when you do and try to actually mean it? it's stupid.

then again I really don't know if you are talking about what I see. it might be different cause i'm actually around very poor notorious urban areas.

All this shit started in New York when the "rap" artists started the trend of dressing like guys going to jail, which includes the shoe-laces untied so that they can't run away. To idolize muggers, and other criminals, is just stupid. I blame it on the breakdown of the family, and the relegation of fatherhood to the level of an unnecessary relic. You catch one of these gang-punks alone, and they're afraid to even look you in the eye.

I agree it's stupid to idolize criminals, but I guess that's just unfortunately the way it is with some people. I also think it may have to do with absence of a mother/father figure and poverty stricken circumstances where these kids grow up and see nothing positive except for hustling drugs and basically 'doing what it takes'.

But, to say gangs, gang violence, and gangsta trends is because of rap artists? What lol?. The artists just bring what they experienced/saw [Way before they were artists] to the public. Many of them grew up in the situations mentioned above...and now they act as a reporter, sharing their upbringings with the rest of the world.

People get so upset when they hear a guy rapping about murder, drugs, guns, and all that...but they are simply just reporting the truth to you. People don't get mad at the guy on the news telling you about a murder, or even at a movie where you actually SEE the act of violence...but when it comes to hip-hop music...God forbid!

This is all you need to know. It's pretty close-minded to judge a whole lifestyle just because you don't agree with it.

Btw Hock...how are things? Party like it's 1999 with your posts lol.

You really don't think it's at all exagerrated? I agree that some rappers are probably truthful, but others just glory in their image without any real truth.

Well who doesn't hate a wanna be gangster

I know some real gangsters that are proud to be what they are
they've done some real shit and without the act they'd be dead

some move on to normal lifestyles
some stay stuck in that environment forever

we gotta show some respect!

I know what you mean, but it's not all about personal experiences. Some of it is just characterization of what would/does go on in that kind of lifestyle...like a movie [or like I said...a reporter...the guy on the scene didn't have anything to do with the event, but he was there to witness it, and reports it back to the public]. Then of course, a lot of guys express personal experience.

Maybe I have a different perspective living in Canada, where there really is no excuse for anyone to be like that. Here our economy is fucking booming, and there is no reason for ANYONE to be unemployed and steal....and if you're not well off, the government will practically wipe your ass for you.

They just can't be bothered with a real job. Easier to put a cap in some guy's ass.

I actually kind of dig the hip-hop dress style. A pose is a pose is a pose. It's a pose. Nothing more til you add an "R" to the end. I can't stand a poser. I really hate those suburbanite white kids who have two black friends and try and talk like them one minute and like a yuppie the next. Gangsta lifestyle is stupid. Trying to make a living selling drugs and stealing cars, and complaining about the man keeping you down is whack. The man should keep them down, they're fucking thieves. Gangsta traits aren't so bad by themselves, but combined they can make one sorry ass person. That goes for any genre of people: gangstas, rednecks, preps, emo kids, nerds, whoever.

Yeah unfortunately there is a lot of shit happening behind the curtains
With the media and all, it's practically impossible
for most of the population to really know what's going on

those kids that act gangsters but really aren't, really are a disgrace
they were led by the media's influence, helping spreading the false images

its kindda sad!

Yeah, personally i really hate the gangsta persona that everyone is trying to pick up these days, but the fact is is that, no matter how good a country's economy is doing, there will ALWAYS be poverty and crime, no matter how you slice it. Im sure canada has bad ghettos, as america does. And for every little suburban white kid acting tough, there is a black man trying to put food on the table. That being said, there is alot of welfare abuse and general laziness, but still there is alot of people just trying to get out of the hood. Its not always through legitimate ways, i mean, its a very bad place. I went to a football game in a pretty rough part of the city, high school, and some dispute over money turned into a 16 year old shooting a 17 year old in the face with a 9mm. I was standing about 30 feet away at the concessions booth and watched it unfold. That kind of bullshit happens quite often in many parts of the city which is the #1 poorest and #7 most dangerous, and i can see why these kids want to get the fuck out of there.

The fashion no, not at all. Unless it looks like The Streets just puked all over them. I wear some hip hop clothing, hat's, boots, hoodies, baggy jeans, but I don't really wear XXL T's. I have worn clothes from all different stereotypical groups over the years. Now I just wear what I fancy wearing. It's fashion at the end of the day, and people will always dislike other fashions. Mostly because it just doesn't appeal to them. Same with every other thing in life. It's the attitudes that count. If someone is acting like something their not then that's a bit different in my books. Don't hate someone just becsuase they wear a different T-Shirt.

I don't understand while the gangster lifestyle is glamorized so much. If a lot of these wannabes actually went to a real ghetto (there are plenty of em here in Chicago), they'd see it's a life filled with lots of violence, hardcore drug use (ie. meth, crack, etc), and basically being a menace 2 society. There's nothing glamorous about that.

Deadfan420 (http://boards.cannabis.com/../members/deadfan420.html) there's nothing glam about being a coked up metal head either but you don't see me moaning about their style. Just because someone dresses that way doesn't mean they follow that lifestyle.

Cannabis=freedom (http://boards.cannabis.com/../members/cannabis-freedom.html) You may not like their clothes but there's no need to hate it, hates such a harsh word. I don't see any hip hop heads here saying f**cking dirty long haired hippies. Exactly.

Some of my students are young men who have had the strength of character to move beyond the gangster mentality that rules their neighborhood, and they pity those who are still fighting "turf battles" over land they don't own, and killing each other daily over trifles misunderstood years before. Those who live in that culture are suckered into thinking it is cool, and they die for it. Why are people still making money selling music that promotes this? Whores will be with us always I suppose.
Anyone who glorifies such a culture is thoughtless and cruel. The little boys growing up, looking up to the "thugs" who should be their role models- is this the future these kids deserve? It isn't just a game, a song, or a fashion statement. It is a philosophy that does not consider human life valuable.

All these baby "ganstas" in big boy pants need to grow up. Especially the idoit surburbanite wannabes. Please.

nightwolf, i'm not judging you because i don't know you but that "im a rocker cause i listen to it and so are my friends" attitude is the same thing the "gangster" kids do with "gansta rap"

be yourself man. i listen to rap, rock, blues, jazz, colombian folk music, salsa....techno....southern rock...classic rock.. i pretty much listen to ALL kinds of music but it does not label me.
it sucks because i know EXACTLY what you are talking about(rappers, rockers, skateboarders, gothic...all that shit) and it is ruining american schools, in my opinion..

oh, but they are. i've spent far too much time in some of the more interesting sections of the l.a. area and dealt too often with such foolish gangsters. even though their oversized clothing covers substantial firepower and they are backed up by a considerable number, they are still so much less than they appear and i can't help but be amused by such frightened children. for some reason they seem to believe that the pose and the language will make them appear dangerous when all it does is turn them into a cartoon. the most dangerous men i've ever met were friendly and kept a smile on their face at all times. by comparison, these scowling peacocks are nothing more than rank amateurs, an amusing yet impotent side note in the subculture of senseless violence.

That's unfair IMO. It's ok to accept one life style and then look down upon another one? I probably can say the same thing about some certain ways of living. I will not speak on them at all because I'm not trying to start a whole new argument here. But, if your building blocks took place in Asia you'd probably grow up used to that life style, talking that language and just being like everyone around you, coming to America it'd be so different. The only point I'm trying to make is just because some one grew up up a certain environment and don't know any better than what they've picked up during their growing years and couldn't change if they wanted to does not deserve to be despised because you all think they are being "gangsta".

There is no being to it, they are are just living how they know how. Gangsta is just a label people want to tag on that style of life. And this is not the first time I've heard some one rant on about that stuff. Oh they feel oh so uncomfortable when they are having a birthday party at Old Country Buffet and feel like their fun has been interrupted and completely stopped when they see a clique of guys come in with baggy clothes and hats and shit and all that other bull shit. I mean if it's on the rack just like every other item of clothing why can't it be bought and worn just like everything else? But you never think how we feel. We might be in a place where everyone is basically the same at a bar or something and then you see a few white guys in a suit come in. They stands out, who are they? Why are they here? Are they undercover cops? He must be here to start some trouble. I never seen him before. We feel just as uncomfortable when some one comes around looking all different but for all we know he could just be there to get a few drinks and leave. No different, we might just be coming to Old Country Buffet just to get a few plates and leave. Not focused on a damn thing, go on finish having your birth day party we ain't gon shoot the place up g-style and shit. Oh you hate the mean mug with the west coast sign? Fuck I hate the sign when you put up your damn index fingers and pinky and stick your tounge out and squint your eyes like you're be fucked in the ass. Yes I am mad I'm tired of the bitching about a life style that you don't even have to be apart of. Not like it's effecting your every day lives. No I'm not a gangsta but I grew up in a predominantly black area and most of my peers and family members just grew up to be that way and honestly I'm sick and fuckin' tired of being stared at and watched and followed in stores and monitored by people when I want to be with my friends and family just because they think we're gangsta's and up to no good.
