Rudy Giuliani has again lashed out at medical marijuana on the campaign trail:

"I believe the effort to try and make marijuana available for medical uses is really a way to legalize it. There's no reason for it," the former New York mayor said during a town hall-style meeting at New Hampshire Technical Institute.

He also said there are better alternatives.

"You can accomplish everything you want to accomplish with things other than marijuana, probably better. There are pain medications much superior to marijuana," he said. [AP]

I've already written about the potent irony of Giuliani's opposition to medical marijuana, but if he wonâ??t shut up about this, neither will I. If Rudy Giuliani won't stop talking trash about medical marijuana, and endorsing pharmaceutical alternatives, I wonâ??t stop bringing up the fact that he worked as a hired consultant for OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharma.

Giuliani has less than no credibility on this issue because he worked for a company that is in direct competition with medical marijuana. It's really that simple. His claims that medical marijuana is part of a broader legalization conspiracy are also ironic considering that Giuliani played a key role in keeping OxyContin legal after it was linked with widespread abuse. Giuliani personally met with former DEA administrator Asa Hutchinson and persuaded him to leave Purdue alone. Meanwhile, abuse of pharmaceutical drugs, particularly OxyContin, has become the fastest growing drug problem among America's youth.

To be clear, I don't believe OxyContin should be illegal. Patients must be allowed to choose medicines based on what works for them, whether it be OxyContin, medical marijuana, or tree bark. But the transparent hypocrisy of Giuliani's behavior is so over-the-top that it is just impossible to ignore.

Perhaps he should try marijuana with his oxycontin, it would remove the nausea sometimes associated with opium, opiates, and opioids. Maybe then, he would support it. BTW, I'm talking about medical use, not recreation.

Thanks for the post.

Do you have better sources on this stuff? I did a quick search and only found blogs talking about Rudy and Purdue Pharma.

I'd like to find an editorial or news article from a major outlet.

Rudy is the worst Republican canidate. He has no respect for the Constitution. He is an authoritarian. I would support a Democrat before I supported Rudy. This election year is full of crappy choices minus Ron Paul.

Not this bullshit again. Every single person who is against medical marijuana always seems to say that - about how there are "better" solutions. Like what, a potential addictive opioid like OxyContin, to kill pain? Well, maybe they should look at the facts. Marijuana does not have potential to cause physical dependence. OxyContin does.

How is it a valid argument to say, "It's just a way of legalizing marijuana." So? OxyContin is legal, is it not? It pretty much only has the uses of killing pain and getting stoned. Marijuana has the uses of killing pain, helping glaucoma, helping multiple sclerosis, helping rheumatoid arthritis, and shitloads of other medical applications, and of course, getting stoned. You can overdose with OxyContin, but you cannot overdose on Marijuana. Thousands of people per year die from toxic doses of OxyContin, and there is not one documented death from Marijuana.

Maybe that fuck-head Giuliani should tell Medical Marijuana patients that it doesn't help, and that there are better alternatives.

Here in America, we take money over what's right to do. Fuck money, it is ruining people's lives, because there are too many greedy fucks out there who have the power to help legalize medical marijuana, but won't because they have their hand in the pharmaceutical industry's pockets.

The ninth and tenth amendment state that we have the right to self-medicate, regardless of what the need is. Whether it be depression, or other debilitating illnesses. Of course, those amendments are disregarded in court, because guess what? If they weren't, every drug user could get their case dropped. Look at how corrupt this is. I hate this country. We've also converted other countries to do the same.

MistaGanja: they don't care if you die slowly, because they're still getting money. The executives of the makers of OxyContin got sued for lying to the public about how addictive OxyContin can potentially be. This means, they have aided in ruining countless lives, and by making it seem not as harmful as it is, have even possibly aided in the deaths of people. They shouldn't be paying $634 Million dollars, which is likely a fraction of what they've made. They should be serving prison time.

The patient should be able to choose what medicine works best for them. Whether it be marijuana, cocaine, whatever. It should not be in the hands of scheming politicians, it should be between the doctor and the patient. Or even just the patient. Of course, the only debate about this is that "they just want it to be legal so they can smoke it." Of course, why not? What's wrong with that? And again, so they can use it to ease their suffering. Fuck you, you scheming politicians. I hope Rudy Giuliani gets assassinated. I hope all the politicians who have aided in lying to the public to support their own agenda (money) get assassinated.

Why don't we all write a letter to Mr. Giuliani in response to what he said about medical marijuana, and tell him to "tell that to the people who use it as medicine." Likely his response would be along the lines of: "They just use that as an excuse to get stoned."

Is it ok to love both Oxycontin and marijuana?

Even somebody on a therapudic dose of Oxycontin can see that it's some powerful stuff. I obtained a few for pain from the doc before and they were gone in only a few days. Although marijuana doesn't have the same effects as Oxycontin it is much safer in the short and long term.

ok, forgive me because i dont feel like searching for the citation needed for this, but i will always remember this from the paper i wrote on legalization of marijuana.

in 1997, 600,000 prescriptions of oxycontin were written for non-cancer patients. in 2002, that number was 6.3 million......hmmmmm........
