Do you have holes drilled in the bottom?
Search through my recent posts for stuff on 5 gallon pails... they are great but present problems for a grower indoors.

here are the rest...

yup there are 4 holes each 3/4 inch...made sure nd threw some lil marble things in for drainage...and ancorage
PharmaCan

3/4 inch holes are kinda big - your marbles will all fall out and after a while you'll have lost all your marbles.
:S2:
Just a little levity to welcome you back kid. :D
BTW - Read Stinky's post very carefully and do exactly as she instructed you. One way that you will learn around here is to learn to follow instructions.
Good luck

Well to save you a bit of hunting, here;s the thing...
5 gallon pails have a ridge under. It blocks drainage even WITH holes.
Holes in the sides TOO are helpful for drainage and aeration.
Pharma is laughing because you are going to be losing your marbles... ba da BING hahaha
MArbles are unnecessary. As long as the SOIL stays in there, you're fine. I drill 5/8" holes in the sides sometimes... but i think half inch is about right... no big deal on hole size, better too big than too small though and 1/2" on a big pail like that is TOO small!
.:Karma:. o.O
07-12-2007, 12:41 AM
soo i should drill a few in the sides.../??? kuzz if it will help i will...
stinkyattic
07-12-2007, 12:44 AM
Yes, it's almost a necessity. I would never grow in a 5 gallon pail without side holes, or even a 3 gallon pail. If you look at the pots that commercial greenhouses use, the holes are at the edge so there's always a bit exposed to the air.
.:Karma:. o.O
07-12-2007, 12:48 AM
old ill get on it but where should i drill the holes at...like on the side way up or lower...yup im lost again...

07-12-2007, 12:53 AM
I've never grown in a 5 gal bucket, but I would assume the holes should be kinda close to the bottom?????

It looks like you put some work into your grow chamber. An oscillating fan blowing on your plants would be a good addition. The plants love a breeze.
You really need to make the box light proof. light leaks will make your plant hermie.

Low. Where the water runs down to. Like 4" up the sides seems to work fine.

ok thnks nd how would i make the box light proof i have mylar jus didnt put it up also the weird lil fan hangin off the side of the box is a blower...it gives the plants a good breeze...cools the lights...nd also vents the box....

Okay listen kiddo, a big part of growing successfully is the ability to solve problems. Lightproofing is one of the simplest problems you will encounter in your grow, so I'm gonna let you work this one out for yourself... I am available to contract a complete grow room setup, but I charge for it and expect the client to get the FUCK outta the way....

OK - What you need to do is go to the cabinet/closet section and start reading everything you can about how people have put their grow boxes together. It's just too complicated to write an entire instruction manual just for you. YOU need to do the research and YOU need to do the independent research necessary.
You should also research light leaks so you will understand the importance of not having them.
And research fans so you will learn about ventilation and understand what you need and what is important.
Good luck

First you read - then you do. You may be dumb, you may just be ignorant. Ignorance can be cured, with study - dumb pretty much just means you have to study longer and harder.

lean over here so I can beat you over the head with a DIY manual...
I can't afford to have a prefab grow either. I CAN however afford to go to home depot and stock up on cull lumber and sheetrock screws... charge up the battery on the cordless drill... and build shit my damn self.
seriously though if you have a couple grand to hire a contractor, you too can have a nice grow without having to use your brain.
didn't you ever play with legos when you were a kid, or build a fort out in the woods? this isn't all that different.
.:Karma:. o.O

if im getting this pvc would be perfect, ive seen others do this but i cant give you the post because it was a while ago and dont remember where. make the pvc with a 45 degree angle in it(or 2), or even a 90 deg. the curves in the pipe will keep the light from entering. and btw your plants do look very healthy.

and karma, they have to have food banks or churches where you live because we have like 5 that help people out in need here on different days of the week. we arent a very big town either. get some help. its available. either call a church or look in the back of your paper. some provide meals and some send you home with a box of food.

Karma - Lightproofing your box can be as simple as covering it when the lights are out - or as complicated as sealing every single crack.
Are you turning your lights on and off manually or do you have a timer? If you are turning them on and off manually then it will be easy to cover and uncover the box when you turn the lights off/on.
You seem to be pretty good at dumpster diving - I can't believe you found that fan - so go find some black visquine (plastic). Trying to lightproof any other way is going to cost money that you don't have and you need to spend your limited funds on other things. Like some decent nutrients - for you and the plants. :D
Take your fan and make it so that it is exhausting air - blowing the hot air out of the cab. The fan should be mounted close to the top of the cabinet because hot air rises.
Get an oscilating fan and put it in the cab to move air around.
So, anyway, scrounge some black plastic and scrounge another fan (the blade kind that blows air while it turns from one side to the other).
Are you using any nutrients at all with your plants right now?

Karma - Dude - You have already admitted that you aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Instead of spreading your valuable intellectual resources too thin, maybe you should think about concentrating on one thing at a time, get that thing accomplished, then move on to your next project.
Right now you have a grow cabinet that needs work and plants that will soon need a functioning grow cabinet so that they can flower. Unless you intend to just abandon the plant(s) you have now, maybe you should concentrate on what needs to be done to accomplish this grow, then think about changing to hydro once this grow is dialed in.

Kiddo, you sound like you could use a switch in priorites. I have a bike myself, a Ninja, but the bike came AFTER my living situation was tight.
Toys like motorcycles are extraneous to survival... here's the order of business: Food first, then rent and utilities, then your main transporation (yes, SOME people just walk and bicycle to work), clothes, etc....
The rest is butter. If you want to spend money on expensive toys, you should not complain that you are lacking for the basics.

I know exactly what your talking about. When I started growing indoors I was working a shit job at Carls Jr. barely scraping together a living. Life was pure poverty until a few months ago when I got a job working construction for $13/hour full time. Now I have my precious internet back after years! And I'm almost able to buy some new toys for my gardening pleasure.
Just a tip, hop in the dumpsters at construction sites, I see al kinds of cool shit I could use just get tossed out. I wish I could take it home, but I dont want to arise any suspicion of what I plan to do with it.
