where exactly is the proper place to top plants- need to bush up and deter height- have always in past cut just below newest leave cluster but would like to make sure this is correct

You can do that, or you can pinch the new growth right where it is growing, removing either all, or most of, the newest pair of leaves. If you leave just the stubs, just a tiny bit, you get the FIM effect where you could end up with multiple main shoots at that point.

you cut the top off.. use a razor blade so it doesn't crush the stem..

I personally lean towards tying and not cutting because you can achieve similar results AND keep the main cola.

I also prefer bending and tying personally. I only pinch if a plant is not producing side shoots quickly enough on its own.

FIM stands for 'fuck i missed' and there are some threads about it in 'advanced' and 'indoor'... just use the search function. It is a special type of pinching.
