No not crazy.
Phenos are determined by a limited number of POTENTIAL traits that an unstable strain or cross can be carrying. Say you have a strain whose genetic background includes plants with hashy taste and plants with citrus taste. When crossed, these genetics are passed along to the offspring and will combine in different ways. In subsequent generations, the 2 distinct flavors may pop back up again, with individuals favoring a specific ancestor.

Think about dogs. I'm going to use boxers as a GREAT example of this. They carry 2 main genes for coat color: One determines fawn or brindle, and another determines amount of white on the coat (called 'flashy'). If you cross a solid brindle to a flashy fawn, all the possible coat colors could possibly be represented in that litter. It's still the same breed of dog- all other traits are VERY stable- but the limited variations in color are a good example of phenotypic variation.

I hope that makes a little sense.

Phenotype = What you see. An organisms visible characteristics.

Genotype = what's in the genes. Recessive traits can "hide behind" dominant traits and pop up next generation.

Awwww shucks.
But yeah, the thing with clones is that growing out an unstable strain with a lot of phenotypic variation is like YAY!!! Variety! Pick your favorite, or keep one of each!
