reflections from power to spirituality?

I read this entire link.

And part of it describes how things such as gods and goddesses may have reflected who was in power at the time, and things such as that.

I was just wondering what peoples viewpoints are on religion as just a reflection of the ruling party of the time.

It has always been that 'religion' has been used by those in power to control the masses, to them it just a tool, no more no less.
