After reading RESiNATE's last thread, which discusses the legalisation of Cannabis, I got to thinking. Alot of us (me included) complain that Cannabis is illegal.. I myself rant and rave to anyone that will listen, if the conversation gets on to a topic thats even slightly related. And, for the first time in my life, im sick of talking about it and sick of hearing about it.. Instead of talking about it I want to DO SOMETHING. The only problem is, I dont quite know what to do. I could join the Legalise Marijuana Party, and show my support, but even though this subject is important to me, i'm not going to help (even in a small way) a political party come in to power that has only addressed one subject. I'm sure if they came in to power in the UK, they would be out-voted in the next elections. So what can I do? I'm just one 17 year old, living on a tiny little island - roughly 46 square miles - in the English Channel, population: 87,186, as of 2001. The last time the subject of Cannabis declassification was brought to the public, there were strong protests, and in the end, Cannabis remained where it was, unlike in the UK, where it was declassified.
A hell of alot of people smoke Cannabis here.. Every time I go to a party, nearly everyone there is smoking weed. Last night, I was sitting in a bar smoking a joint and having a beer with my friends. Every time I saw somebody in the bar that I knew, I offered them the joint, and they accepted it, and nobody - not even the bar staff - told me to put it out, or said 'what the fuck are you doing?!?'... Cannabis is widely used here, widely accepted, and is known to be widely accepted.
So why isn't the government even considering the declassification or even legalisation of it? That was the question i've been asking myself, and I think I know the answer. The answer is, the government is not debating whether or not to change their stance on Cannabis, because nobody is asking them to change their stance on Cannabis. Sure, when the UK was debating whether or not to desclassify it, the government here also debated it, but they quickly 'changed the subject', so to speak, saying they were waiting to see whether the declassification of Cannabis in the UK had a positive or negative effect - as far as I know, they are still waiting.
So how can I ask my government? I cant just approach a States (the States is the name of the governemt here, sort of) member, and say 'Hey, I like to get stoned, and so do alot of my mates.. so can you fix it so I wont get arrested?'.
So what can I do?
I'm sure if I was to write a letter to the JEP (the Jersey Evening Post, the only local newspaper) to appear in their 'Letters to the Editor' section, they would disregard it, and it would have been a waste of my time. The sbuject would not reach the public, and things would continue on as they are. If I was to print thousands of flyers, and hand them to people in the streets, post them all over walls, stick them up in shops and in coffee-shops etc, I would undoubtedly get arrested, and they would be taken down, and I would appear in the newspaper as a criminal, and the governemt would use that to 'muddy the water'. If I were to write letters to a number of local politicans, I would no doubt be ignored. There are no THC Ministries here; there's no way of having a 'Marijuana March', or protest, because there are simply not enough people here; I cant open up a 'cafe' here - I would just get arrested, even if I had the funds to do so.
I think now is the time that we all do something about it. No matter where you live, come up with ideas and do something to get the debate out in the open, once and for all, until our governments decide to make a definite decision, one way or the other.. Do whatever the fuck you can, instead of us all sitting around, complaining about it, like we all do.
Anyway, until someone comes up with an idea that will make an impact big enough to get the debate out in the open, I guess we're just gonna have to accept things as they are, get stoned, and forget about it.
