to start off with, VY Canis Majoris is the largest known star. if you were to replace the sun with this star its outer edge would extend to the orbit of saturn

Most certainly, this is one of the brightest stars in our sky. The earth will be able to see it quite well.

i'd imagine we would be able to see it. it's 5,000 light years away which is our neighbor in the cosmological sense.

actually if its that size it will become a supermassive blackhole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermassive_black_hole)
