I found this on wikipedia...
"The yawn reflex is often described as contagious: if one person yawns, this will cause another person to "sympathetically" yawn.[5] Mythbusters attempted an experiment documenting this effect in episode 2.28, "Is Yawning Contagious?", with a conclusion of partly confirmed. The proximate cause for contagious yawning may lie with mirror neurons, i.e. neurons in the frontal cortex of certain vertebrates, which upon being exposed to a stimulus from conspecific (same species) and occasionally interspecific organisms, activates the same regions in the brain[6]. Mirror neurons have been proposed as a driving force for imitation which lies at the root of much human learning, e.g. language acquisition. Yawning may be an offshoot of the same imitative impulse.
"To look at the issue in terms of evolutionary advantage, if there is one at all, yawning might be a herd instinct.[7] Other theories suggest that the yawn serves to synchronize mood behavior among gregarious animals, similar to the howling of the wolf pack. It signals tiredness to other members of the group in order to synchronize sleeping patterns and periods of activity. It can serve as a warning in displaying large, canine teeth.[citation needed] This phenomenon has been observed among various primates. The threat gesture is a way of maintaining order in the primates' social structure. The contagion of yawning is interspecific, for example a human yawning in front of a pet dog can incite the dog to yawn as well. Oddly, sometimes sympathetic yawning may be caused by simply looking at a picture of a person or animal yawning, or even seeing the word yawn.[citation needed] A specific study was conducted on chimpanzees. A group of chimpanzees was shown a video of other chimpanzees yawning, and the study chimpanzees yawned also. This helps to partly confirm a yawn's "contagiousness"."

You almost got me cannabis. I'm still on the verge of it. But, yeah. That's crazy. Nobody can explain it. The Mythbusters make a whole lot of mistakes in their experiments. Like the intro says, they're special effects people. Not really scientists. Why do ya think they like blowing up everything they get their hands on? From what I hear, Wikipedia is only half reliable too. But I've never heard a better explanation than the one above, so I'll roll with it for now. Ah ha, made it through the thread w/o yawning.

Wikipedia used to be pretty innacurrate, but these days it's really not too bad, there are people the company has hired to go through and verify a lot of things that are put up there these days.

Ha, I just woke up from slumber also. I must have yawned about 7 times reading this thread (No exaggeration).
I often yawn, especially when my girlfriend comes to stay, she makes me yawn all the time because she yawns lol. Strangely enough I really liked the description about us doing it to flash our teeth. Not because it's something we do to make us seem more threatening in certain situations, but just because it shows we still have animal instincts in us. I'm going to try this on my dog later, I wonder if he will yawn also.

There was a report a couple days ago on the morning news and they had a scientist who thinks he found out why people yawn. He says it's a way to cool off the brain, which can get very warm if you don't get enough sleep. He even did an experiment where he had people watching videos of people yawning. Some of the people held cold packs on their forehead, some people held hot packs on their forehead, and some people held nothing on their forehead. He found that the people with the hot packs yawned a lot more and the people with the cold packs yawned a lot less. I don't know if that's really the explanation, but it's better than anything I can come up with.

Hmm...maybe it's because your brain is just starting to warm up after cooling off all night? I don't know, I'm not a physician. I doubt that the head temperature thing is the whole story, especially since its contagiousness has been scientifically proven, and any full explanation of yawning would have to take that into account.
