Awhile back I came across a ceramic lighter that could also be used as a vaporizer. Does anyone recall reading or hearing about this?

never heard of it although it sounds pretty cool.

Yes I know what these are. Basically just an electric hot knife. It's almost like a soldering iron that gets way hot and you touch it to the bowl instead of using a lighter and sucking the gas in. They work really well I have used one myself. The only downside is they are usually not battery operated so they are not mobile. Also if you touch it to anything gooey like hash sometimes it gets stuck on the end. Most the time it makes the bud com-bust into smoke but I guess you could vaporize the bud if you had a ceramic lighter that burned at that precise temperature.

I have never used one ( I have several ceramic heating elements lying around,so I guess I could make one in less than 10min...) but the idea was to not actually touch what ever you were trying to vaporize but to hold the element close to it...sounds like it would take practice and would draw a lot more air into the hit than most vaporizers(weak hits),but thats just an educated guess.

If you could make a chimney for your bowl that was long enough so that when you insert the heat element it didn't touch ,that would focus the heat ,restrict excess air and take less finesse/skill to use.
