So I'm new to growing, and fairly recently discovered the existence of "feminized seeds" and after giving it a thought or two came to the conclusion of... why would you ever NOT go with feminized seeds? for the time, money and effort that would be spent getting a plant healthy enough to clone just to SEE if its a female, it seems like the few extra bucks spent on feminized seeds would be a hell of a lot more than worth it. Am I missing something?

Yup! You have not yet encountered the Dreaded Hermaphrodite.

Fem sees are made with a female-female cross, leaving out the Y chromosome entirely. Problem is, to get pollen from a girl, you have to force-herm her. Some strains herm easily. Some PLANTS herm differently than others. You don't know what sort or how much stress it took to herm the bitch, so you might (especially as a nOOb) accidentally re-create those conditions in your grow.

Grower Kittah sez:
Beware teh dreaded Herm!!11!

Being NOOB I'd advise against it till you can control / eliminate any and all stress in your room / enviroment . I'm getting really good at this after 18 yrs of playin and I still get a stray male flower w/ them now and then .

I'm still not making the connection... I figure I have a better chance of just growing a female plant than accidently recreating the proper conditions to induce a herm. I'm growin with bag seed right now just for the sake of gaining experience. I have regular Easy Sativa seeds germinating. I figured I would grow the ES, clone and flower the bag seed plants see what I got, and order some fem seeds. I guess everything you guys said still stands...

I didn't differentiate, but I'm talking strickly about ordering femenized seeds from a reliable source.

Yes ,
All them high priced feminised / female seeds = whatever they're callin em nowadays have huge chances of these probs. unless handled w/ extreme care . I've bred them myself and had great luck w/ all my guinea pigs that have run them till 3 mos. ago . Actually had someone piss 1 off bad enough the entire plant was male , not just stray nanas .
Get good w/ reg genetics 1st , or clone .

Zoomati Ive only been growing 3 years and I've used feminized seeds from the beginning and regular seeds I've never gotten a Hermi in soil or my hydro and my first hydro grows were all screwed up and stressed. Did I get a litle lucky probably, but I think its worth the risk if you don't want to have to wait and see the sex. One thing I've noticed is that the plants I get from feminized seeds are a lot weaker than an unsexed seed. Stinky and Crispi know more than most people ever will so there words should be taken very seriously. Just wanted to share my own experience with you. I'd also like to tell you since I have plants in continuous growth cycles I don't ever buy fem seeds anymore, because now the wait isn't so bad!

We just got done w/ an almost perfectly stress free grow using fem. snl x nev haze . The only stress these things saw was a temp jump from a low of 65 deg. to a high of 86 deg. a time or 2 when we didn't have the central a/c on , and yes there are stray seeds = HERMIES . If you are O.C.D or have the patients I have actually found single stray male flowers hidden inside the actual calyxs that have swollen to appear as they're carrying seeds , then they "POP" and the calyx opens to release the pollen . = you don't even know the male flowers are there until it's 2 damn late . Male flowers do NOT always form in packs -n- bunches like w/ a completely male plant . So be warned .
