WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Opponents effectively killed President Bush's long-fought and emotion-laden Senate immigration bill Thursday when members voted against advancing the controversial legislation.

The tally was 46 to 53, 14 votes shy of the 60 needed to end debate.

The president, who visited the Capitol this month to push hard for overhauling the nation's immigration laws, delivered a brief statement shortly after the vote saying he was "sorry" Congress could not reach agreement, calling its "failure to act" a "disappointment." (Watch Bush explain why he was disappointed by the vote )

"Congress really needs to prove to the American people that it can come together on hard issues," Bush said.

The bill aimed to create a path to citizenship for some of the 12 million illegal immigrants and to toughen border security.

Explaining his reasons for voting against the bill, GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions, a leading critic of the measure, said "it would not work."

"Our analysis was that it would result in 8.7 million more people in the next 20 years here illegally," said the Alabama senator.

Thursday's vote represented a "sad day for America," said Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York. (See how your senators voted)

"Everyone knows that our immigration laws are broken," Schumer said. "And a country loses some of its greatness when it can't fix a problem that everyone knows is broken. And that's what happened today."

To hell with fences....they can be cut, gone over the top, under. Put up a wall like the great wall of china; gaurd posts, seismic sensors, etc.....state of the art.

how about enforcing the laws we have and fining the crap out of employers who insist on using illegal labor? how about allowing border enforcement to do its job and giving law enforcement the green light to question immigration status? how about moving against these sanctuary cities whose clarion call is a slap in the face to all honest american citizens?

Well were not trying to "divide the world", we just want people to come over legally. Im not against immigration at all, I could care less, just do it legally. And
P4B im with you, we should do it with the highest technology we can.

Right now our border patrol is being assaulted by these people throwing large rocks, bricks, rocks wrapped in cloth and set on fire. Are we willing to give these people the right to fire back in order to protect themselves? What will the world opinion be when we do?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with what ya say but there are other issues to this also.

in a perfect world we would need no nations and no fences. this is not a perfect world we seem to have a government that believes not in a hand up but a hand out. the people of this country can't afford to hand out their hard earned wealth to the poor of the entire world.

^Have you seen what some of the illegals have been doing to some of the hunting land/property by the borders? Theres people who own all this land down there that they use for paid hunting trips. The land owners buy the deer and make them huge and such then allow people to hunt on their land for a fee. Well all these illegals are coming over and leaving diapers and trash everywhere! They were throwing diapers on top of the cactuses so theres no way to get them off! Then they killed a bunch of his deer (Worth thousands mind you) and they only cut off what they needed and left the rest to rot! THEN he finds them sleeping in his towers all the time! My god, if I was him id shoot any SOB that came onto my land. But then id be thrown in the clink....yeah THATS fair.

I have also seen that in areas of heavy brush, etc...there is evidence of women and girls being raped by some of these people smugglers. This is a HUGE issue and the bill that they were looking at doesn't cover the half of it.

right now our border patrol is being assaulted by its own government and our border is one of the most permeable in the world. while baby bush and the rest of this government plays patty cake with the likes of mexico's corrupt excuse for a government, the people who were foolish enough to elect these buffoons are paying in cash and blood for the ambitions of the few.

You and me both. If they put a bounty on interlopers, I'd go down to the border and suplement my retirement. Just think, at 50.00 a head, that'd be 50 million a year to be made at the border, I'd sure want to get in on that, Would probably make a lot more than my investments, just put a sniper every 2-3 hundred yards in a tower, and pay 50 bucks an ear.

Immigrants are the only people living the true "American Dream", the same dream this country was made for. I really believe this is more about race than it is about the economy. Immigrants have been part of this country for over 300 year but now that everyone is "fat and happy", goals and brotherhood has changed, and now it's a whole new ball game for people who want a new life. . . "Land of the free, free to the power and the people in uniform.". . .

If the people of our country would realize that their is no future in oil no matter where you steal it. They could possibly notice that agriculture is our only chance at a healthy world (this is where hemp comes in). Then maybe, just maybe, we would stop waisting our time on the other side of the world. turn our attention to a country right next to us. Open fields of industrial crops, and give jobs to people who appreciate this country and are willing to work. . .

But hey, those boarder hoppers are useless right, at least until we run out of oil and your kids are working the fields, But then again why would someone want to work on a farm. . .

Your wages or salary should be at least double what it is now. The bottom rung of the economic ladder, for jobs at places like Mac Donalds, should be no less than $20/hour, and more in high-cost areas.

The reason your salary is not at least double is because of illegal immigration. This is a fact, plain and simple.

If the amnesty bill had been enacted, it would have cost American taxpayers 2.4 trillion dollars in social benefits to the former illegals over 20 years. These people are parasites on society. They contribute little and take a lot.

Finally, there is the issue of culture. Our great tradition with immigration is for the immigrants to come here, assimilate into our society and make a contribution to society. The Hispanics want to bring their culture here and keep it and keep their language and live off the largess of the taxpaying public. Free education, free health care, food stamps - all the benes that we have supposedly reserved for legal Americans and those unfortunate Americans who need our help, not for every damn foreigner who's lucky enough or sneaky enough to set foot on our soil.
