i always put my plants in a dark place during the day and then under lights from around 11:00 to when i wake up(around 11 and sometimes 12). is there anythinig wrong with this or would it be better to have them under lights while its actually daytime?

As long as the 'dark' cycle has NO light leaks you'll be fine (interrupting the dark cycle is very bad of course). Many growers run their lights at "night" to keep temps down, offset energy spikes, etc....no big deal as longs the plants see dark for ~12hrs straight. Best of luck.

No, that's fine. As long as you make sure it's actually DARK when it's supposed to be dark, they won't know the difference. Many people do that to prevent heat problems (i.e. using HID lamps at the hottest of the day). Fix any light leaks, you'll be fine.
What are your temps? What ya growin'? How many plants? :D
