BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein's cousin, widely known as "Chemical Ali", was sentenced on Sunday to hang for masterminding a genocidal military campaign that used poison gas against Iraq's Kurds in the 1980s.

Ali Hassan al-Majeed, looking frail and wearing traditional Arab robes, stood silently as the judge read the verdict. As he was escorted from the Baghdad courtroom, he said: "Thanks be to God."

"This is judgment day for the aggressors against the Kurdish people," said Namiq Horamy, as he handed out sweets to colleagues in Kurdistan's Ministry of Martyrs, which looks after victims of the campaign.

Majeed, whose very name once sparked fear among Iraqis, directed a military campaign against the Kurdish north in which chemical weapons were used, villages demolished, agricultural lands destroyed and tens of thousands of people killed.

I agree, but chemical ali should hang right beside them, along with Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, and at least a dozen other neocons. Then we could start with the CEOs of oil companies and war profiteering companies. All in all it would be a fairly large hanging, one worthy of national TV coverage.

Oh yeah sure Chemical Ali is also a bad man.

I think we should put all the leaders of the world on an island together, and not let them off until they can learn to behave. Maybe they'll all go mad and kill each other.

All that would do is create an entire new breed of asshole.

In the same way all spraying bombs all over the middle east does is create a new breed of terrorist.

I t has to take that long so it looks more like a proper legal process, and less like a political assasination.

This is funny as hell! all them links i had saved now say "Page has been removed"..LoL---or maybe the US propaganda machine is the best the world has ever seen....

Here's something of intrest, im sure i i dig deep enuff i can find more

Ali had been mistakenly thought to have died in April 2003, following the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq. After a coalition attack on his house in Basra, he was reported to have been killed by laser-guided bombs. "Major Andrew Jackson, of the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment, said that the body was found along with that of his bodyguard and the head of Iraqi intelligence services in Basra."[4]

It turned out that U.K. military officials spoke too soon. In June 2003, Ali's status was changed from "...believed dead but unconfirmed" to "unknown" by U.S. defense officials, saying he might still be alive after all. He was rumored to have been joking and smiling in a Baghdad hospital on the day that it fell. This proved to be a justified doubt - U.S. officials confirmed on August 21, 2003 that he had been captured alive. He was prominent (fifth) on the U.S. list of most-wanted Iraqis and is the King of Spades in the deck of most-wanted Iraqi playing cards.

Ali Hassan al-Majid, dubbed "Chemical Ali" by opponents of the Iraqi regime for ordering a poison gas attack that killed thousands of Kurds, has been found dead, a British officer said today.
Major Andrew Jackson of the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment told The Associated Press that his superiors had confirmed the death during a briefing earlier today.

He said Chemical Ali's body was found along with that of his bodyguard and the head of Iraqi intelligence services in Basra.

Al-Majid was a first cousin of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who had entrusted him with defence of southern Iraq against invading American and British forces.

One of the most brutal members of President Saddam's inner circle, al-Majid, in his 50s, led a 1988 campaign against rebellious Kurds in northern Iraq in which whole villages were wiped out. An estimated 100,000 Kurds, mostly civilians, were killed during that campaign.

He also has been linked to the bloody crackdown on Shiites in southern Iraq following a 1991 uprising following the last Gulf war. He served as governor of Kuwait during Iraq's seven-month occupation of the emirate in 1990-1991.

It seems Al-Majid was killed on Saturday when two coalition aircraft used laser-guided munitions to attack his house in Basra.

British troops yesterday sent an armoured column deep into Basra. Today, they followed with light-armored infantry - 50 to 75 vehicles and 700 troops.

Maj Jackson said the discovery of al-Majid's body was one of the reasons the British decided to move their infantry into the city because with the leadership gone, resistance might fall apart.
