Washington, D.C. (AHN)-Just 14 percent of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress, marking an all-time low, and the lowest of any of the 16 institutions tested in this year's Gallop's Confidence in Institutions survey.
Ranking among such disregarded entities as HMOs, Congress is at its lowest ebb since Gallup began tracking congressional approval ratings in 1973, according to the poll released Thursday.
The previous low point for Congress was 18 percent, a dip reached at several points from 1991 to 1994.
Americans' confidence in the presidency has dropped along side President George Bush's approval ratings.
In 2002, 58 percent were confident in the presidency compared 25 percent currently. President Bush's job approval ratings have fallen from 84 percent at the beginning of 2002 to 32 percent today.
Of the 16 societal institutions tested in Gallup's 2007 update, Americans express the most confidence in the military.
The military's current 69 percent confidence rating, although the highest of any institution tested this year, is the lowest for the military since the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
