I love how Kirk always tries to bring a t least a little bit of sense to the band when he talks, but he gets ignored half the time he has anything to say. He needs to put some more bass in his voice. lol. Seriously though, he is, in my opinion, one of the greatest guitarists that have ever lived.

He's not bad. It's a shame Metallica went completely crap, when I was 17 I'd never have thought there would be a day when I'd say that.

Indeed, I mean when I first heard St. Anger, I couldn't believe that shit was Metallica, it sounded like it was recorded on a 4-track, and 3/4 of the songs aren't even worth listening to.

I believe it's quite the opposite. He's highly over rated. His soloing is mostly wah wah covered, and he's nowhere near as good as other guitarists, yet he gets more recognition.

Being able to properly use effects is part of being a successful musician, being a lead guitarist is all about creating the right feel for a song, sometimes just playing with a dry sound won't work. Using effects, especially a wah pedal, is a learned technique and the fact that Kirk is so smooth with one, just adds to my belief that he's one of the best. Being one of the most influential guitarists to many, many musicians speaks for itself.

I couldn't help laughing my ass off when Lars started crying on that documentary when Jason walking out, "He's left the band, he's left the band!" LOL What a bunch of losers they are now, they seem to think no-one is buying their records because of napster, when in fact it's actually because they are shite!

You know Megadeth are still doing alright as well, shame about Dave's accident though you can see he can't play anywhere near as good anymore. Even Slayer and Anthrax are still making good records.

You are right good sir, but there is a difference between using an effect and drowning a solo in wah.

kirk is a great guitarist. he has the endurance and technique. metallica invented what i call new blues metal. sabbath was like that but metallica just puts their thrash sound into a blues sound. that was with the load and reload albums. now they are going back to their roots more than ever. st. anger was different but the raw energy was there. their new album should please fans, prob even die hard fans.

I think Kirk Hammet is overrated, but I agree with him about how guitar solos in general have become too formulaic. I'm inspired to listen to St. Anger, to hear what he is trying to accomplish.

I definitely misunderstood him. Shows how the bullshit media can condition your mind.

^^^I can't wait to check out the new album, I heard the studio cut of "The Ecstasy of Gold", and I like it, I just hope the rest of the album is up to par. Even though I agree that there was a lot of raw energy put into St. Anger, I can't stand to listen to it.

To Poiuyt : As always in discussions about musicians, people are never gonna always agree on something. I like how Kirk gets down with the wah pedal, but you're not the first person that I've talked to that thought it was overboard. I do however somewhat agree with you on the statement you made about Kirk being over-rated, cause I think there are a lot of people who name him as their "favorite guitarist", that don't know the first thing about him or his music.

I think kirk is a great guitarist. Yeah he may not be as technically as good as some less famous guitar players but he writes good solos which still have melody even when hes going like hell, which a lot of these shread players could only wish for.

He also seems like a intellegent, genuine nice guy.

Seems like a nice guy, very average guitar player who was lucky enough to join Metallica when they were still any good.
