View Full Version : What's your area's attitude toward smoking openly?

I'm just wondering about cultural attitudes really, how often you could get away with smoking it in public, and where, and get away with it. It seems here in British Columbia me and my friends never even need to hide it. Like today I was walking home for about 20 minutes through my neighborhood, openly smoking a joint, and SO many people walked and drove by me and nobody cares. Yesterday me and my friend were smoking a bowl on a playground we came by, and this guy walks by, sees us, and he says "guys my kid's right behind me, could you tuck that away?" (to which we said "yeah no problem") and that's about the extent of objections I've recieved LOL.

So what's it like in your area? Would somebody actually go out of the way to give you flak, a dirty look, even call the police?

I don't really think it matters. You gotta realize how many people actually smoke trees or used to. Most people don't seem to mind, just the people in power (go figure). I, personally, don't like to smoke openly as I have a criminal record and would probably get fucked in the ass if I got caught on drug charges again. I've smoked joints in public before, don't like it as much as smoking in a safer environment though such as my room. :) I don't hide the fact that I smoke though, that'd be pointless.

I can't smoke in public in New Haven aside from a spliff and maybe once in a while a blunt.

I don't want to find out, so I smoke in the car or in my house.
Someday it wont be a thang at all to walk and smoke out in the open, I hope we get to see it.

Erhm, yeah it will be.. Ciggarettes aren't allowed to smoke in public some places in the world, so why do you think it'll be different with weed, when it's goingto be legal?

I seem to agree more with babyfacedabortion. I'm actually surprised and I'm sure most people would be surprized how many people have actually smoked weed in their life. Whether it was once or even just a puff. Heck, everyone knows Bill Clinton smoked a joint. I beleive the majority of the people have at least tried, got curious or have been offered some weed at one point in their lives.

Personally, I have a medical card, so i've been puffing away in my front porch. I'm sure one of my nieghbors has seen me smoke from time to time, but I really don't think they care. Then again I live in a quiet neighborhood with very limited crime. I guess as long as I'm not bothering anyone, they don't see people smoking weed as a threat. Then again, I may be wrong, maybe they are bothered by it, but they still say good morning to me so I don;t see how they would be bothered.

One thing is for sure, since I got my medical card, I smoke more openly. But I still try and smoke discretly out of respect to myself and to others (especially my parents). My parents are 99% against smoking pot. They both know I smoke, heck, they know I have my medical card. But they won't tell me anything about not smoking pot out of respect. And just that very same way, I won't smoke in front of them out of respect. You have to keep in mind that, although I have a right to have my medication, not everybody sees maryjane the same way.

A lot of people in my area do it, and a lot of cops don't care. Generally I think most people don't care because there's people that do harder drugs around here (usually always rich kids), and most people know pot is harmless. I remember one time I was walking to my friends house and I had a cap with a cannabis leaf on it. I live in a small town so the cops don't have much to do, and one stopped me and kept asking me "where are you hiding the dimebag." I kept telling him I didn't have anything, and I really didn't, in the end he said alright kid I'm pretty sure you have something on you, so I'll let you go and have a fun night. Then his partner said to me, don't think you won kid.

Well, I live around the area where that judge got caught smoking weed in a park. In south florida. I don't think anyone called the cops on him. The cops were already there. lol
I walk down my street from the gas station and smoke joints or blunts all the time. When adults with kids pass they smile and kinda nod towards the joint or blunt and I hide it, no biggie. That could be because they've seen me before though.
The smell.. lol sometimes I wonder if my neighbors mind it because it's consistent, every night they get a cloud of the sweet smell in their backyard. They've never called the police.
I guess it's a matter of how you carry yourself. And also being careful. :rasta:

Ha. I wish I could do something like that. I live in utah. The population of my town is about 80% LDS, better known as Mormons. Just looking like a pothead gets me many dirty looks daily. Most people around here look down on potheads real bad as if there somehow better than us just because we smoke a damn plant. Cops dont care too much since most of them have done it and know that its not that bad. But walk around high and let people notice it you will probably have the police after you asap.

In some parts of DC, you could and no one would care except the police. Mostly, you can't.

Here in Portland Oregon we have legalized medical, and the police are pretty tolerant, even with recreational use. But one thing they don't like is public pot use. Even registered patients have to hide, or risk losing their card.
Lots of people do it anyway.

I have walked around plenty of times smoking a J. It is more in your attitude when you smoke in public...whether you will get busted or not.
One time, I was smoking a joint right in front of Grand Central in NYC..It was a fat joint and I ended up sharing it with a business guy and gave the last of it to a homeless dude. Long live ganga:thumbsup:

50/50 here in north Fulton GA. Some cops are cool some aren't. Most civilians are pretty cool about it, but there's still a lot of yuppies who aren't. Most City of Atlanta cops are cool with it as long as you're not selling or smoking to their face.

I live in Oregon and have smoked weed publicly for years. No one cares, but keep away from the elders and kids, and don't expect the state police to be as liberal as everyone else. Most people can relate to being young and sneaking a toke in public.

The only time I smoke outside freely is when it's snowing. Then it really doesn't look like I'm smoking...well yes it does lol, but I usually walk with my arms and head in my coat and smoke in my coat so no one really see's smoking. Actually I was walking down a main street when a police suburban passed RIGHT by me but didn't see me smoking because I was all in my coat. Other than that, fuck that. I don't like the idea of the cops trying to stop me just for smoking a harmless herb so I don't put my self in that position for it to happen. One day though I'm gonna blow smoke in those fuckers faces.

East Coast US. Doesn't really matter, not a big deal, noone cares. Walking around the neighborhood with a blunt isn't a problem. If you aren't bothering a cop, he won't bother you. Plus, there's so much coke and OC's around here and everyone over 14 drinks, it's considered a good thing if you are smoking weed lol.

Damn where the fuck do you live lol? I'm on East Side too but cops are ass holes. I know most of them by face and I only like a few. Only a few really understand. The others are just...stupid.

A lot of smokers in Hampton Roads, let alone Virginia Beach. The doctors, whom I've talked to, support medicinal marijuana.

Anything weed related in England is fairly well tolerated.

I've rolled joints in taxis before, i've walked around in central London smoking before, i've driven past cop cars with my windows open smoking, and i've bough weed openly in the street.

Infact, weed was even legalised for a period of time in south London.

At night, if you drive around the right parts of London the smell of skunk is in the air.

So yeah, in England you can get away with it 99% of the time, and that's no exageration. If you are unlucky enough to get an arsehole copper all they'll do is throw the weed away and that'll be it.

Well, they did it as a trail thing, but nothing changed. The numbers of smokers stayed the same, the number of arrested stayed the same [very low] so i think they just gave up with the idea. But because weed is classed so low as a drug, it's not something the police always bother with.

When i was arrested the police came into my home, saw i had weed, smelt i'd just smoked and didnt say anything, didnt search the place and didnt take the weed they did find with them.

It's as good as legal really, we just have to keep going for a little longer. I reckon a few years it'll be legal in the UK, as long as we dont allow the properganda to influence morons.

Memphis sucks as far as smoking goes. As a matter of fact, it sucks in every other aspect too. I have a friend who caught a possession charge for a seed the cops found in his car. I almost got arrested for part of an old burnt out roach i had in my ashtray.

That's why I'm moving to OREGON! YAY!

I can smoke everywhere, plenty of times cops have seen me smoking, at most they tell me to take it somewhere else. I try not to smoke near children 10 and younger though.

The neighborhood I live in now is not that great (full of unemployed white trash racist rednecks living off the government), but the rent is cheap and it's close to work for now. My apt. is in the rear of the complex and I smoke outside anytime I want. Nobody around here is going to say anything, and if they did, I have enough of them on camera doing their dirty deeds. Right now i'm in the process of turning my back yard into a lush garden I can't wait to smoke in.:D:stoned:
