Hey, I take an anti-depressant drug prescribed by my doctor (have been for several years now) and just want to know if smoking weed is dangerous or going to fuck me up (in a bad way)???

Anyone else out there on anti-depressants???

I'm still fairly new to smoking weed. But it's not something I'm going to ask my doctor about.

Are you 100% comfortable with the way the meds affect your mind? As in, can you stop yourself and understand "oh, this is the meds talking" and think about how you would react to situations if you were not on the meds? Same goes for the herb. Are you 100% comfortable with every aspect of the come up, the high, the plateau, the come down, etc? Have you combined the two in the past? How often and how much dosage are the meds?

I haven't heard any specific case of weed+meds combination that causes medical/psychological issues, but it's entirely possible. Personally, in a potentially dangerous experimentation like this I would try to half the meds dosage and have a sitter to make sure you're safe if you throw up or worse. Keep the toking to a low low level (one baby hit every five minutes?) until you're comfortable with the way the two substances combine. Remember, the herb is not dangerous on its own, but it causes side effects (paranoia, cottonmouth, confusedness) that may freak you out on the antidepressants. Be in a comfortable, safe setting, and try meditating beforehand.

Some people have actually quit taking antidepressants because the herb is a much much better medicine than the pills. I suggest you talk to your doctor. They can't go to the police unless they think you're going to hurt yourself or others, because of the doc-patient confidentiality. Just ask him if you might want to try MJ in the future.

I'd done the MJ + anti-D for a year, don't really notice anything difference. But MJ + anti-D + alcohol.... wow....... enjoy, but don't suggest doing it too much.

I no longer take anti-D because I hate the side effects, but I still smoke every nite. Believe it or not, I smoke out of my depression. Do u feel happy after taking anti-D?? Do u feel happy after u smoke?? There u go!

With these newer studies showing cannabis' anti-depressant effects, wouldn't anti-depressant meds and Pot be overkill?

Hey all! Thanks for your input!!!

I've been taking Effexor for several years and since I've been taking I usually just feel "normal." Yeah I have ups and downs, but they are nowhere near as bad as they used to be (I think I was borderlined bipolar). In other words, the med I take have no negative side effects for me.

And I LOVE smoking weed! The only time I feel uncomfortable with it is if I smoke more than I intended and get really baked - but only 'cause I'm not used to it. Even the day after I get high I can still feel the relaxing effects of it.

I dunno, I tend to worry a lot about these things. Maybe I'll ask my doc about next time I go in.

Thanks again for all your input!!!

I smoked weed for years, and it worked well as a mood stablelizer, comparied

to some of the meds I now take, the weed always puts me in a better mood.

i have been prescribed so many different anti-depressants, and it's gotten to the point where i just don't even take them anymore because i hate the way they make me feel - they make me feel flat, no emotion. i have no ups, i have no downs. i do not get happy. i do not get sad. and that sucks. i would like to have a little emotion in my life and be able to enjoy things, ya know?

so i quit taking my meds, and instead of taking my meds for the past year, i have been smoking. i feel like with the smoking it helps with my depression and bi polar tendencies (my doc is in the process of diagnosing me with that). when i smoke weed, i actually have ups and downs and am able to experience emotion. without weed or meds i sink into such a depression that i am extremely apathetic and don't give a shit about anything. and my energy is drained. so for me, i've found that smoking weed is what truly helps my depression, not the anti-depressants

I'm on equatro and zyprexa (mood stablizers) I have no negative side effects of the mixture of them and weed. I personally would rather be perscribed pot vs. pills tho ;)

i know what you mean blazed babe, the doctors say im severely depressed and iv taken many meds. Celexa is one that made me feel nothing i felt like a bump on a log.. still doing my daily activity's but i found it was hard to smile.. I am now taking lexapro and gabatril. One for depression and the other is a mood stabilizer. I seem to get angry fast i dunno.. but i have smoked weed the whole time (4years now) and i haven't noticed if it has effected the other drugs in me. but what i have noticed is that when i smoke weed im not an angry person.. i smile.. and nothing seems to bother me.. and to be honest with you i believe it all depends on the person.. your body could act completely different then others, so just be careful on whatever you plan to mix..

if you're bipolar and you're already on an anti-dep then i would worry that the "pep" weeds (ie the ones that give you energy) might set off a manic phase for you. just be careful with the strain you get--make sure they're the ones that chill you out.

also anti-deps take 3-6 weeks to kick in. gotta be patient with them..

bottom line is what works for you and lets you keep being a part of the outside world is what works for you. don't listen to some guy all because he has an extra letter or three after his name.

this is true, but mostly for bi-polar type 1. bi-polar type 2 has pretty different manic episodes. those manic episodes are more like extreme mood swings in seconds that are either trigged by something or worse because there's no trigger. so actually sometimes the strains that chill you out can be worse. because they can actually be a factor to one of those mood swings where you feel like you've just fallen through a trap door and into a black sinking depression. just some info :)

bipolar I has ups and downs. bipolar II has no ups. it's just downs alternating with normal mood (euthymic). i agree--i was more thinking of type I.

blazed_babe
06-16-2007, 07:38 AM
yeah, and actually i didn't even know that there was a type II until pretty recently - just in the last few months. i always thought that the only type of bi polar was the type I, ya know, i just knew about those symptoms, didn't realize that there was a type II at all, not in the least, which is why i was surprised when my psychiatrist brought it up.

sorry if that doesn't make sense, i'm extremely blazed right now and even re-reading what i wrote doesn't help me to realize whether or not its comprehensible. damn.

ive been on many psychiatric meds...sereqouel,lexapro, clonzepam, abilify, welbutrin, celexa, lamictal, loranzepam, geodon, and im probably forgetting some and the only one that i could tell interacted different when i smoked pot.. it would intensfy to a point of sickness, dizzyness, first time i smoked on that medicine i puked everywhere and couldnt walk more than five steps without laying down on the grass, i was laying in random peoples yards and they were asking me if i was okay; it took me an hour to seriously walk a block from the waterfall on the golf course to the street corner so my stepdad could pick me up; then i passed out in the back of the car for a long time... it was probably one of the worst drug induced sickness ive ever had.

wait i'm not understanding--which medication was the one that made you sick when you smoked weed while taking it?

Don't forget rapid cyclers. Caffiene is a big no no. Also I wouldn't take an anti-depressant without some type of sedative/mood stablizer

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN TAKING ANTI-DEPRESSANTS AND SMOKING WEED!! Search online for marijuana and _______ (your antidepressant) before doing it again. I was on amitriptyline for headaches (about 1/4 of normal antidepressant dosage) and it apparently speeds up ur heart-rate, and so does weed. I smoked really good weed the first time I had smoked while taking the pills, and thought my heart was gonna jump out of my chest. I asked my friend a bunch of times if the weed was laced, I felt so weird. I later read online that someone had died from the combo, due to heart problems. Lesson - always research first.

I never took meds for depression - I didn't like the concept of it - so I can't really help you out here. Smoking weed has helped a lot though. The euphoria is a temporary thing, but being able to step back from life and take an objective look at what I was doing and how I acted was the most valuable part of it. Off-topic.

Try it once, take it slow, and if you don't have a problem then keep going if you want. It won't mess you up permanently, if that's what you're wondering.
