In aftermath of shrine bombing, 4 killed in fighting, at least 9 Sunni mosques hit
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Four people died in sectarian fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, and attackers struck at least nine Sunni mosques south of Baghdad in the aftermath of Wednesday's bombing of Al-Askariya Mosque, a major Shiite Muslim shrine in Samarra, police said Thursday.

Thousands of people in cities across Iraq staged angry but peaceful demonstrations protesting the second bombing at the shrine, which also was struck and badly damaged in February 2006 -- a major event that spawned the ongoing widespread Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence and population displacement in Iraq

The latest attack, which destroyed two minarets at the already badly damaged location, sparked calls for unity and calm from worried officials across the globe and in the Salaheddin province city of Samarra. Officials believe angry Shiites probably attacked the Sunni mosques but they don't discount the role of Sunni militants, such as al Qaeda in Iraq, in trying to fan sectarian discord.

"You are sons and grandsons of the two greatest imams who ever lived," said Salaheddin Gov. Hamed Hamoud Shekti, in a public announcement to the citizenry from the Askariya Mosque on Thursday morning. "Please stop the sabotage and destruction, and work on the aims and goals of the city." First off it's summer and when the temps rise so do the attacks. Next, with the surge and the dems views plastered all over the place regarding pull out and the sept. review date this was expected. Hell, the top general over there said that this summer to expect an esculation.

As long as we keep training their people and hitting our targets....it's moving on.

Have a good one!:s4:

It is true that crime does go up in the summer as a general trend. Maybe they should send out troops of buddhists to meditate on mass instead, that might help keep the country from falling apart until the fall comes, then they can send the tanks and the helicopters back in to prepare for the winter elections.

The surge is not working at all.American casualties have been rising every month since jan.The people in charge have no fucking clue of how to win this war just like Vietnam and your soldiars are the ones paying the price just like Nam.If your going to invade a country you dont do it on the cheap by sending only 150 000 troops. Its true what they say history repeats itself. You guys should either get the fuck out or double or triple your troop count then you will have some control over the situation.

We had 500,000 +/- troops in Vietnam in 1967, 1968 & 1969. Nuff said about that.

Syria did a remarkable job of bringing peace and prosperity back to Lebanon when it was in a state of total anarchy, and had been for quite some time. Order in Iraq should be maintained by a regional power(s).

Personally, I'd give the job to Qadafi. He'd have order restored in no time and he has no designs towards Arabia.

What's Baker's solution?

Start a troop drawdown and re-deploy toSaudi Arabia and Kuwait and bring most of the troops home, while pushing the responsibility of restoring order to the Iraqis!
