pure marijuana vs marinol

Im currently doing a project on how cannabis could benefit HIV/AIDS patients and Ive come to the part were I have to compare the pros and cons of using pure cannabis instead of THC in synthesized form such as marinol. Does anyone know of any arguments for or against wether marinol is prefered over smoked cannabis as medicine? Maybe someone already did a comprehensive study on this?

I think i would use regular bud for pain.
Because pure THC is the phycedelic part.
