i have a question.
you have hot water, then you have cold water. which will freeze faster?
is it obviously the cold water, because water goes from hot to warm to cold to freezing, or is there some unknown factor that you might not know about that would lead to a conclusion of hot water freezing faster?
im doing an experiment.

Can hot water freeze faster than cold water? (http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/hot_water.html)

Aha!!! You would think. But look at this which says HOT water freezes faster than COLD.Can hot water freeze faster than cold water? (http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/hot_water.html)
From the University of California.
Damn... P4B beat me to it! By seconds! Foiled again!;)

thanks guys! saved me from a lot of experimentation.
i probably should still do it so i can record all the proper data and findings for my professor..but this might do. heh

im actually still going to do it.
the syllabus for the experiment calls for 8 uniform containers of cold water and the same thing, substitute cold for hot.
pop them in the freezer and check back every ten minutes, making note of any crystallization or any other changes you might find. it could be anything..crystal structure, water level height in container, whatever.
in the end you talk about temperature and molecular motion, hydrogen bonds, etc. this really is something out of jr high, and im suprised at my level in college were doing such an experiment, but maybe im just not giving it enough credit..because theres A LOT you have to get exactly correct, or your paper can be shot down easily.
but im definately thinking it has something to do with bonds and how they form. i need to find out just whats going on in that hot water after its in the freezer. like molecularily.

What if you didn't have a freezer? Or are you doing this during your lab time?

its a homework assignment, im doing it at home.
i dont know..if i didnt have a freezer how would i afford college?

wtf mate, i couldn't read into that for 15 seconds. i was gonna say use more surface area to the hot liquid.
what does all that crazy stuff mean?

more surface area means non-uniform, and therefore is not a real scientific experiment.
correct me if im wrong..im really high and trying to study other stuff right now haha.

Hey... I thought only smart people were supposed to read this thread!;) J/K
How about this:the most likely explanation is the water vapor carries away a certain amount of heat. when water cools down from near boiling to the freezing point, as much as 16 percent evaporates away, compared to 7 percent for water at 160 degrees. The smaller the amount of water, of course, the faster it freezes. The hotter the water, the faster it will freeze.

idk, i just thought it was maybe a high school thing. when i read into the page i see you're talking about carbonated water?
so that does not change the molecular make-up of the water but does probably change the environment on a microscopic level. like adding microscopic insulation.
thats interesting, i guess....

of course its microscopic..its molecular biology!

I actualy knew this one without google. DOes that mean I'm smart? Duh!
I remember it has something to do with the speed of the atoms but I'll be damned if I remember just what it is.

Damn.. so we can build a spaceship.. but still noone really knows why warm water freezes faster. :smokin:
This has got nothing to do with the thread - but it involves freezing.
Do you like beer?
Do you like refreshing sobets?
Then do what i do, make beer sorbet! Seriously, the beer wont completly freeze [or shouldnt] so you can eat it as a sorbet after whatever meal.
It's even better if you drink a beer with the meal and THEN have the pudding.

so i havnt done this lab yet because its not due yet haha, and ive been swamped with other research projects.
anyways, my lab partner did it and the hot water didnt freeze any faster than the cold water, but it did get to a certain cold temperature before the cold water could freeze.
if you dont understand..cold water was at x degrees farenheit and hot water was at y degrees farenheit. x didnt change too much in ten minutes but y changed drastically in the first ten minutes. once y reached reasonably or almost the same temp as x, it started to slow down and freeze at just about the same rate.
i know its kind of confusing but im stoned so sorry.
also i wonder why the results werent as predicted? there were no variables, everything was done very orthodoxed and strictly to regulation. who knows?

I think hot freezes faster because of it's higher oxygen content. Might be wrong.
halfassedjediknight
06-19-2007, 04:58 AM
apparantly it doesnt freeze faster than the cold, it just cools faster. then when they reach just about the same temp, the hot water slows down as far as low temperature rate goes, and they start freezing at the same speed.
