One of the busiest times of the year for my job at college, book sale time at the start of the quarter. We are short staffed though our boss went back to teaching and we were already short a couple other workstudies that graduated.

It was going to be a hard couple weeks but us 3 remaining workstudies were going to have someone from another department help out.

I went in today on my day off (7:30am), my fellow workstudy Kyle supposed to be there by 8am. He doesn't show, so the morning rush of booksales are completely fallen on me, on top of that a lab was being redone and the construction crew only finished over the weekend, the lab had to be up and running today. So before and after the morning booksale rush I had to go setup that entire lab on my own. I then get word that we are recieving 150 new desktops for the IT department to install upstairs that I would be recieving and needing to deliver. So about 9:30 I call both other workstudies Kyle and Brent and leave a message on their voice mails pleading for one of them to show and help me as was planned.

10:30 am Kyle shows up and I try and tell him what all we have to do. He then proceeds to tell me "Oh yeah I transfered , to the IT department no longer working in the bookstore see you" and walks off. Leaving me completely hanging...it then gets worse. Our help from another department, that was supposed to come over and help with booksales shows up and tells me that he got fed up with his job and walked out so he couldn't help me "us" with booksales.

Shortly after this the truck pulls in with the desktops, I have him unload them into the bookstore, stressed out, pissed off and it's nearing 1pm so I decide to go to lunch. During lunch I decide that this set of events is very bad leaving only 2 employees in the bookstore and I had no contact with that other guy. I decide to go to the big boss of the school and tell her whats going on and see if she has a solution.

I get back from lunch and tell the Director all that had transpired. Kyle transfering the day of booksales without telling anyone (apparently not even her which he's supposed to) Ronnie quitting his job, brent not showing and all the work that I had done and needed to be done. She then sets up a meeting for all the workstudies, the supervisor of IT and a few others to get all this sorted, she also says that Kyle is not moving to IT this week.

A little later I'm back in the bookstore working and Kyle comes storming in grabs a cart of desktops and storms off, I try to tell him about the meeting and he flat out refuses to talk or listen to me. Pissed to the point you can just feel he wants to beat my ass down.

I ask through the grapevine what's up, and apparently someone told him that I went in and told the Director that he does no work and that i do it all (all the time) that he does nothing. (all I can think of at this point is WTF?!?!?) He is one of those little guys with a Napoleon complex that if they get pissed they want to beat the crap out of them. The day proceeded on from there and just seemed to spiral into just utter horribleness. It was lightened by the arrival of Brent to swoop in and take over booksales for me.

So not only am I absolutely dead tired and stressed out but I have some guy at work running around wanting to cause me bodily harm thinking that I said something to the big boss about him that I didn't yet he won't let me get a word in to sort this out. And I have another two weeks worth of booksales to go through.

I went and saw my connection today though so I'm restocked up again finally after a week drought and ready to spend the evening baked out of my mind with no worries in the world before having to go back in tomorrow and face the cluster fuck of a mess in there.

The key to long life is stress management, many studies have been done on it. The best stress management? :rasta: . And i've done many studies on that.

Now the bad day starts morphing into a bad week it seems...Tuesday I go in for the meeting all of us had with the big boss.

She uses the time to get our schedules down and also decided to "unveal" her new plan for workstudies/bookstore. She wants to completely change the way the bookstore runs.

As a bookstore workstudy we only get paid like $7.55/hr no benefits (no medical, no vaction or sick time) there is no advancement or raises in the workstudy program and you have to be enrolled as a full time student and once you graduate you are immediately out of a job, no exceptions. What makes the job appealing is the fact that while we work hard it came in little clusters followed by clusters of down time.

Before the bookstore ran like this. Our old boss Don would have a list of things to do for the day around the building, if we finished that list of stuff, pretty much the rest of the day we had to sit in the bookstore and just wait for staff or students to come down and ask for things. Also if some of the jobs were highly strenuous like having to move a bunch of furniture or something, after it was done we would be able to sit down for 30min-1hr afterwards and just relax. We could work on homework if had some, browse the internet on our laptops play some games even. As long as the jobs got done we had this privilege. Dons motto was "Work smarter, not harder"

This new boss of ours Karen is apparently the type that feels that if you should feel privileged to have a job period and no matter what the circumstances you should be working your ass off the whole time you are there, no down time.

She is elminating down time and instead wants us to contiuously work all day no matter what, she is closing the bookstore down for most of the day except for certain "windows" of time where it's open to get students and staff stuff. The rest of the time we are to help maintenence or the IT department or another department with stuff and stay constantly busy. She is also wanting to enforce an hour cap on workstudies only allowing us to work like 20-25 hours. Which really sucks since I'm currently trying to save up to get my first car.

She just made the job a dreaded piece of crap. It went from being my favorite job the previous week to being a job I dread and want to quit. I'm not a workaholic. I believe in getting "my" job done and thats it. I work because I have to, to support my home life, to pay the bills. I refuse to break my back for a job that no matter how hard I work will be over with as soon as I graduate college within a year. I can't just quit though because due to my transportation problems and me going to college, no place will hire me because I can't work but a specific set of hours, a very small window. Since it takes so long to get around this horrible city on the bus. I'm virtually stuck here in this job until I get a car.
