Sometime within the next couple of days I'm going to have to go into the hospital for surgery. I don't know if I'm going to be in the hospital for a couple days or more than a week and I won't know until I actually am in the hospital. (I may need an angioplasty - I may need an arterial bypass. The former is wham, bam, thank you ma'am - the latter is like getting run over with a truck.)

Soooo - what the hell can I do with my plants? Put them in a tub of water so they can bottom feed & hope for the best?

Deep water helps. The problem might be ph, that was mine when i had surgery and my wife helped. Boy i was sweating it out.

Having said all that dont worry, the hospitol visit is more important

good luck with both

If your plants are in pots, you can rig up a temporary wick watering system.

De-pot your plant, drill some 5/8" holes (3-4) in the bottom, drop some 5/8" nylon ropes through those and fray about 3-4" of the ends. Drop the plant back in the pot. Rig up a reservoir (storage tub's good) and put some planks across it for the plants. Drop the ropes into the reservoir (fray that end too). The pot bottom should be no more than about 6-8" above the waterline.

Voila, instant absentee watering system. ;)

Surgery sucks. Hang in there, man.

One thing you DON'T want to do is just drop your plants in a tray of water. Your soil/media will suck up much more water than the plants can use- and you will come out of hospital to sickly plants with rotted roots.

Good tutorial on all hydro systems, including wick systems (http://www.simplyhydro.com/system.htm).

al b fuct has hit the nail on the head. use the silky nylon type of rope. If you can get the rope to even run up the sides of the pot a bit that will help. NO STANDING WATER!!!! It will drown your roots.

Well worry more about you then plants. You can always grow more plants but making another you is a bit harder.

Get well soon man.

if you get an angioplasty, don't worry, it's a piece of cake - got to watch mine on the TV while it was happening, kinda cool with that thing snaking around your chest, feels weird, but no real pain - GOOD LUCK !

LOL - Tell that story to someone who doesn't know any better. Hell, the dye hurts when it goes through. When they inflate the balloon it feels like the damn M/I all over again. I had angioplasty in my left descending coronary artery so when they inflated the balloon there was no blood going to a large part of my heart - that hurt!

...and then there's always the humiliation of having a bunch of people huddled around your naked crotch.

...and they gave me one yellow valium and said "This should help you relax." Yeah, right.

Anyway, this time the problem is in my legs - DVTs. After the heart proceedures, the legs should be a piece of cake.

Hey guys and gals - thanks so much for all the good wishes!

I don't have any silky rope but I tore a terrycloth towel into strips and wicked each pot with 5 gallons of water each. What will be will be.

Again, thanks for all the good wishes!!!

Darn Doctors....

Monday it was "Your doppler looks terrible. Get to the hospital right away, you need surgery."

So yesterday I go to the hospital, spend most of the day going through all the check-in rigamaroll, then the doctor says, "Oh, I forgot you're taking blood thinners. We can't operate now, your blood won't clot. Go home and come back in one week.

Sigh

Well, at least I now have time to automate the watering.

Go home and come back in one week.

oh man, that sounds familiar... it was a tick over two weeks ago that I was pending some surgery, did the right thing and had nothing by mouth after 10pm per doc's instructions... INCLUDING NO COFFEE :mad::mad: in the morning... only to get to the effing hospital and be told 'oops, we've cancelled all 'elective' surgeries (anything besides bloody open heart surgery is 'elective' around here) because of this'n'thatandso'n'so.

At least my veterinarian hasn't (yet) forgotten what meds I'm on before booking me in for repairs. That would alarm me.

PC, you just might find that the wick makes a pretty OK watering system even for times you're home. If in soil, it's a pretty good way to go. Electronically automated watering of soil will be hard to dial in as well as ye olde wicke system.

PharmaCan

The thing is, Al, I'm not in soil. I'm in coco, which is considered hydro. With coco the pots are flooded and one shoots for 10% - 20% run-off.

Al B. Fuct
06-14-2007, 01:56 PM
Oh, OK. Sounds like a plain ol flood system might do ya.
