when you begin flowering your plants will double~triple in size.

Yep dude, now would be the perfect time for you to switch to 12 hours light 12 hours dark.

You may think just a little bigger before i do, but you'll regret that, switch now and they will get real big real fast.

Actual plant size is IMHO less important than the maturity of the plant and whether it has as many branches as you would like.
If you are strapped for space, you can always bend, tie, or even remove branches.
The best time to initiate flower in a from-seed plant is when the nodes have gone alternating, signalling that the plant has reached sexual maturity. The top of the main stem will start to look a little zig-zag. This is when you can flower with least stress, and it will take very little time to show sex.
Clones my be flowered as soon as they have good roots.

You can go to 12/12 as soon as you have a rooted cutting of each plant, so when you know which one's the winner, you've got a mom ready to go.

Stinky's ( always ) right- look for the alternating node structure.

Not all plants will do this- I kept an Ortega for 5+ years that never went alternate. Trust me, she was blindingly mature.

Most will. Pre-flower development will also be a good sign.

Um... was she using your razor to shave her bikini line? Going out for a night on the town in a low-cut dress? Swiggin' manhattans and hanging out in dimly-lit blues clubs?

Man... I heard that Ortega was a wild strain... :D

wouldn't you want to move the males so they don't pollinate all the females?

wait, are you trying to make hash out of the MALES?
exercise in futility... males don't produce NEARLY enough resins to bother with.

Alternating nodes is when you will notice that off of your main stems, the nodes (where leaves and branches grow from) will not grow 2 at a time symmetrically. Instead, you will have 1 node, then some stem, then another node, more stem, node, etc.
