Incoming freshman to Purdue University.

You should feel lucky Bird Girl, I wanted to go to U of Texas (I was born in San Antonio), but since I now live in Chicago it is so hard to get into. I think the number was that U of T accepted around 1k out of state students, including those from overseas. Only one person in my school of 1k students got in (even when our average ACT is 28). :( It's such a nice campus.

UT's such a huge place nowadays. Of course, it was big in the late 70s, too. There were about 38,000 people there when I first went in the fall of 1977, but it was a lot easier to get into in those days. Pretty much anyone who wanted to go to UT in those days and had the state minimum SAT/ACTs could get in. That was before they guaranteed acceptance of the state's top 10% or 15% of its high school students, which I guess is why it has enrollment of 50,000 these days. If I had to do it over again, I'd have gone to a smaller university where there was less cut-throat competition and more personal attention. Like Purdue, which is a great school. You going to study engineering?

I'm debating between Computer Science (Programming) and Computer Graphics Technology (3D Art and Animation). Right now I'm in CGT but both majors can somewhat switch between each other, which is nice for someone in my position. That's one of the main reasons I chose Purdue. If I did get into UT then I probably would have been forced to go the programming route, since they don't really offer much in cgt.

If you wanted more personal experience, what made you decide to go to grad school there?

my freshman roommate at georgia tech was a CS major who was dead set on going to purdue until he got a scholarship to GT at the last second.

I actually was looking into GT, but never really got around to applying. It was probably since that school doesn't get as much recognition as it should around here.

GT is alright. i grew up about 30 minutes away from it, most of my friends ended up at UGA but GT is probably the better fit for me. i mean, there's the stereotypes (like, your average student is a nerdy asian who never leaves his dorm) but that's ok for me because i don't have to compete with them for the ladies :D

everybody at tech's really smart, really involved and well-rounded, it's nuts
all the calc professors are asian and don't speak english and they end up busting everybody's balls

Under any other circumstances, I'd have gone someplace else smaller. But I was in an arts/humanities degree plan through the UT Plan II program that kept us in for two extra semesters, began plowing us through graduate courses in addition to regular ones during our senior year and in that additional year, and spit us out at the end with both a B.A. and an M.A. So it was automatic with what I was studying. Didn't really feel like separate degrees, to be honest. But in course hours and credits, it was.

Ole Miss! I love that place. I had good friends who went there back in my day, and if I'd had a daughter I'd have loved it if she'd gone there. Oxford is a fine, fine place. (My family hails originally from north Lousiana, so the Mississippi Delta feels like home, too.)

Ole Miss is a party school. It's also a frat/sorority school, like most big Deep South schools are. Are you Greek?

Yey for non-Greek hippies! I say that's a lot better than the cliquishness and exclusivity of sororities, frankly, and a lot better from an academic standpoint. I don't know if that's true or not anymore, but when I was in college, it took a lot more guts to stay independent than to be drawn into a sorority or frat. I suspect that's still very true at a southern school like Ole Miss.

:)

yeah, i thought about joining one, but decided that i would rather spend the money on other stuff. there are many other reasons too haha but i won't bore everyone with them. yeah, i'm in an intensive study program for my degree already, and didn't want to give a sorority that much of my time because here, they're sooooooooooooo time consuming. and they have a bunch of stupid rules - for example, my friend anna (who is in phi mu) went to the phi mu halloween date party with another friend of mine, eddie, and one of the rules of the night was that if your date threw up anywhere besides in a toilet, then you had to pay a fine of $250. that's just one of the many bullshit fines that i didn't want to even consider dealing with.

soooooooo many greeks live on campus, and whenever an election is coming up for asb or just anything, tons of sorority girls stand all over campus in little clusters, trying to get you to vote for their sorority sister, and they shove pamphlets and shit that they made in your face and it annoys the hell out of me. and that usually goes on for a solid week...ugh. but, you have to admit, the greek scene really contributes to the grove during football season.

*sorry if i offended anyone who is in a frat or sorority - i tried to express my opinions, and chose my words carefully, in an attempt not to offend :) *
