I wanted to buy a bike so that I can start saving 20-40 bucks a week in gas. The problem that I am having is deciding the quality of bikes...

So back on track - Is $99.00 going to get a decent bike that will last me or should I invest a little more, suck it up, and eventually be happy that I spent the extra money?

I really dig these cruiser bikes... I like the minimalist design of them and I think it will be perfect to serve my puposes. Here's a couple I've chosen from two manufacturers if some of you want to look at them and compare and give me your opinion...

3 g mens beach cruiser bike-$99 :: Beach Cruiser Bikes-$119 :: cheap skateboards $20 cheapest skateboard decks,almost rodney mullen uber experimental skateboard decks,Plan b completes,Girl skateboards,Flip skateboard deck,New alien logo grip tape (http://www.evileds.com/catalog/-3-g-mens-beach-cruiser-bike-99-p-17476.html)

FrameSet1 (http://www.islandsportshop.com/FrameSet4.htm)

Basically they are the same bike as you can see... Aside from the much different price tag. So far the only advantage in my opinion is the more expensive has white wall tires which I like. So what do some of you think? Any comments would be much obliged...

my girlfriend just told me yesterday shes finally decided to buy one. weve been meaning to get them forever now.

my friend got an awesome shwinn beach cruiser for around 100 or 150 bucks. hes customized it a lot..he has all sorts of handlebars, a springer fork to absorb shock, chopped and customized fenders, all this craziness.

Thanks for the link and no, definitely not a Wal-mart shopper here. Boycotting them for 3+ years now, not that it makes any difference...

Yes relatively flat area, I considered getting a bike with gears but I think it would be too confusing for my simple mind.

Thanks for the replies thus far...

I thought it would be really cool to have a cruiser. So I spent almost 400$ on an extremely cute leopard print cruiser.

Rode it for one summer...
...and realized I live in an extremely hilly town and that a cruiser was near impossible.

Somethin' to think about if you live in a hilly town.

Did you say a bike with gears would be too complicated for you?

No offense, but 8 year olds know how to switch gears on a bike. It's easy, you just flip the gear lever to make the pedalling easier or harder. :p

I made the mistake of buying a CCM mountain bike from Wal-Mart (you can mock me if you want to regarding this). I hated the damn thing. The bike floated when you hit a bump. I still have it, minus a rear wheel.

I got a better one towards the end of last summer though. Nothing super duper, but it's a freestyle mountain bike made by Supercycle. It has both front and rear shocks, nice big frame, dirt wheels. I got up the trials everyday here. Cost me $150 with 50% off from $300.

It's best to shop at the end of the season for sporting stuff as it's dirt cheap.

For hilly areas and trials, you're going to wait some gears. Cruisers are good only for the streets and flat roads, but if that's where you live, then sure, why not, but I would spend the extra cash and get something that will be worth it in the long run and last you.

Did any of you guys ever have a job when you were kids doing deliveries, mostly for tips, on a heavy-duty bike with no gears, a large basket, and balloon tires? Those things make any regular bicycle, one-speed cruiser or otherwise, feel like a motorcycle.

I recommend buying a hybrid bike.

They're nice because it can handle some rough terrain, and well as having speed on the street. It's also light enough you can carry it around if you felt like it.

I dunno if anyone said this, but don't bother getting an expensive bike, it'll only get stolen.. And don't get one from the papers, the previous owner will probably come back and steal it with an extra set of keys for the lock or something..

You can't even insure a mountain bike these days, they are like the #1 stolen thing...
