hi guys! my name is lestie, and i'm growing three plants in a black dwc bucket. everything i have is homemade, as i'm about as low budget as one could possible get... but, it all works :p

i'll need to look for dates and particulars in my journal, but i have weekly pix.

setup info:

8 23w cfls
1 400w mh reflector (for the cfls)
2 120cfm fans (one for cooling the light, once for aggitating the plants)
1 15g black dog food bucket with flip top lid
3 3'' netpots, heavyduty
gravel
dual outlet air pump
2 10'' airstones
gh three part (hardwater micro)
cal/mag (waiting for delivery)
hammerhead (waiting for delivery)
ph pen and tds/temp pen

backtracking, i've had a bad ca deff. it got worse and worse... as a last resort, i upped the nutes to 15ml grow, 10ml micro, and 5ml bloom. this seems to have helped, i also added one tablespoon of epsom salts.

these are clones; i got them from a freind, who got her mom from a friend, who got a slip from one who grew it from seed. i've heard stories, seen pix, and i hope it goes as good as i've heard and seen.

strain is dreamgoddess, i think she said it is a cross of godbud and dreamweaver...

as far as age, like i said, i realy don't know without finding my journal. i gess they've been vegging just under four weeks now, about three weeks from seeing roots through the net pot.

what gets me is the branching! i had planned on topping them, but the lats are outgrowing the top! so i have multitopped plants with no lst or topping.... i like this hydro stuff :D

You'll be amazed w/ the hydro deal sis . Now that roots are actually way dwn in nutes be careful , they'll outgrow that container bloody fast and choke each other out . Lookin good so far , keep up the good work .

xc, i realy need to know.... this bucket is 15g. i was told that one plant's roots will do well in a 5g bucket, so i figured three would do nicely....

wrong.... these guys have branched so much it's unreal. no topping, no lst, just straight up bush! oh, and the roots are just floating now, they aren't deep in the res yet.... my big problem is the clutter. the plants are too close. i think i'm going to make a screen.

i just got a 400w hps today!!!! :D:D:D:D

Off to a great start Lestie - loving the tight short internodes. You see that with T5 lights often so youre doin great.

Where did you get that bucket? I'm looking for a 15 or 20 gallon one with a split lid like yours. I wanna use it as a small res. I did a websearch for 15g black dog food bucket (per your desc. LOL) and only got a bunch of crap.

1st off, mega mega king kong props for such vibrant looking plants! My hats off on your n00b experience. And this is from one n00b to an0ther.

2nd, I had to LOL at the sight of that street light hovering over the plants!! I don't think I've ever seen it done that way, but LOL again and again, we people know how to rig up what we need right? :) Think I might shimmy up the street light outside and make a platform, throw a plant up there and see what happens. :p
Wiring up a remote ballast and making it all look "purdy" is a cinch and you shouldn't have any issues.

dizzy, the light came from a big warehouse i think; just got it yesterday... for free!!! :D we hung it as is to test the heat. tomorrow, we'll take it down, and tear it apart, make it into a remote lamp. i have this great link, it's posted on the first page somewhere.... thanx and please stay tuned!

Crazy growth sis. You will also love the fact that all the yellowing / N Def. during flowering is almost non existant w/ hydro .

I'll try to get a cpl. pics. of the snl x nev hz today at 5 1/2 weeks in flower - i bet they are 5 1/2 ft tall and were 50 in. in diameter before we had to start tying stuff up due to weight . Yours will be the same I bet .

I stumbled on this thread by chance - I need to clarify that statement - I have never done 'hydro' in my life - I am an old dirt farmer :D - what I said, my local public water system has a pH of 4.5 - I use 'prilled dolomite lime' to adjust pH, and replace the calcium and magnesium, that my reverse-osmosis system removes (4.5 to 6.5 with a couple teaspoons in a gallon, in my situation) - another dolomite lime product I used, wasn't 'prilled' and consisted of little white crystals, that doesn't dissolve in water too well, so I went back to the 'prilled' version - hope this helps :smokin:

U have my Vote on starting to flower tommorrow....That baby will more than likely triple in size by the time ur ready for ur harvest.....As for yields I think in my opinion that growing in hydro the yields dramatically increase versus doing a grow in soil..Checkout X-Crispi his dwc grow was insane.........U should def get more than a couple of ounces in the end...sweets..;)

I never kept track of my veg time this time , but topped at 14-16 in just 1 time and gave 10 days for recovery and kaboom . I don't think they'll beat the 17 ounce cottoncandy x , but it's gonna be damn close .

Other than a lil fight w/ ph now and then isn't this just too easy sis. ?
If you are still going to do the DWC thing and would like to recirculate them I still have a cpl. pumps left , the 6in. netpot lids are gone , you said you were gonna use the smaller netpots so I never sent them .
I have also noticed the lesser seedlings I put in dirt when doing these hydro buckets never ever look the same - dirt /hydro . Hydro = Much bushier plants , much more side branching even before topping . You mentioned the clones reacted dif. than the orig. gb x dw .

after seeing what dwc does, i don't see any reason to ever do an indoor soil grow again unless i'm making moms from beans. from now on, it's clones and dwc for indoors ;)

i don't get the ppm stuff... i added the three part according to label (3-2-1) and was at 1000ppm. i added superthrive and cal/mag and was near 1400. after phing, i was at 1900?? a friend said this is ok and normal, what do you guys think?

That seems high to me....check the first page of my grow log....think I listed what I use and thats pretty close to standard....1900 sounds really up there....

1900 is high si . might work fine when bigger .
Add some clear ph water to it to bring it down a lil bit -1400 or so .
I usually work my way up little by little till I see just the very tips of my leaves barely start to get pissed = lil burning / brown on the tips -record ppm and back it off a lil bit .

i added two gallons of fresh water today, to top off to full level. ppms are now just above 1500. i figured it out too.... ppms were good till i added ph up, and i had to add i think four teaspoons to get it up to 5.8.... no burns or anything.... and these girls seem to be drinking about a gallon a day....

Very sweet looking Can Bush. This thing might just become a freak of nature in like 6 weeks. Hope it will make the race to the end. I love to see big huge areas covered in buds. I saw this video with the guy, I think he called himself Mr. Green, he popped his head out from a huge bed of buds all painted and dressed in green. So very nice. This just might be the mini of that.

One question about your watering system- you're using airstones in your (very cleverly recycled dogfood box) reservoir, but how full is the rez? I guess I'm asking is your grow is classifiable as aero or DWC. If the water level is really low, it sounds like aero.

I'm looking to get rid of the rockwool floc I use in my grow- and aero looks like the way forward. I just need to work out how best to do it for a grow the size of mine... aero for 92 plants in flower will be a bit of a mechanical challenge!

this is a dwc, i try not to let the res drop too low. however, it does act as an aero as well. ie, these clones were rooted in this system. i kept the res low, and the bubbles splashed the netpots, creating a realy nice environment for roots.

i have, use, and love a little homemade aerocloner, but i think it's way too high maintenance for a full grow. this dwc is working great for me though, and i think i'll stick to it, as it's just so straightforward! water and bubbles, nothing else. no timers, lines, etc, just water in a bucket :D

hope you stick around, the next 7-8 weeks should be filled with excitement in this thread!

ps, i loathe rockwool, hate it hate it hate it!!!!!! i root my clones directly in medium. i'm going to try germing beans in gravel.... so keep an eye out for that thread in the future.

It would, too. I've seen aero based on water pumps that force water through sprayers. I think the way you're doing it is far superior, especially from a reliability standpoint. Water sprayers can clog from little tiny bits of gack and grit or dried nutes on the spray nozzle, where your air system makes a finer, highly oxygenated nute mist without the possibility of sprayer clogs. If I do aero, it'll be similar to your system.

You can add little extras to your system (particularly useful if you build more buckets) like some lawn irrigation valves and whatnot to make tank changes easier, but the basic concept is rock solid. :)

I like rockwool cubes for cloning because they make easy keeping the root tip environment consistently correct and thus yield quick rooting clones. The rockwool is pretty irrelevant after you get a good spray of roots.

DWC & aero systems tend to fix the plant in place as there's no medium to support the roots if you want to move them around.

If you use gravel, do you avoid limestone? Seems like that would drive the pH up. Sandstone river gravel or marble chips sounds like the thing, but you clearly have worked it out so far! :)

hey al! i know what you mean with spray heads getting clogged, that's what i deal with when using my aerocloner. it requires daily checking, but it works great, my fastest rooting method.

other than that, dwc bubblers work very well for rooting clones; i don't have the luxury of all the ooh la la's, so i'm using quartz granite gravel as a medium. it adds a trace amount of organic potassium, derived from granite dust, but that's it; no probs with ph.

i've use rw, and it has worked for me with rooting clones, i just find it an extra hassle. i root in soil, or aero, or in the bubbler now, no more rw.

as far as moving stuff, this single bucket can be moved wherever i need it. and for res changes (atm, going to upgrade and put in a drain) my brother and i lift the lid and place it on a new bucket with fresh nutes. so mobility is an option with this set up....

as for the no medium to support roots, look at my root shots, you can see the net pots holding the plants. the roots will grow all through the net pot, then end up dangling in the nute solution. i think this is why dwc works so well, there is alway full contact between nutes and roots.

also, depending on the yeild, i may do the three plant per bucket thing again. i've been training them by hand, and tucking leaves; that's how i mananged to get a cannashrub :D

once the tops form, i'll spread them out even more, open the bud sites and (don't hate me) take a few leaves here and there to open even more bud sites. i know how to take just a few, and i know when to stop :p

I've tried to be really good since that one grow about pruning things but getting the light to them really does seem to make a big difference so its hard not to "improve" things with my usual panache. :stoned:

Well, all is well as usual on the old front. So, put me up, are you at week 2 of flower? What amount of nutes are you using now? I have been experimenting with the 3 part feeding schedule. It is a mix between LK's and my own.

w-ell, we had a power outage, and had to get an electrician to come in. we moved the bush outside and threw a tarp over them.... stress stress stress!!!

they're back in now, and re'setup, but my timer burnt out, putting lights on time three hours behind, wacky lighting schedule, stress stress stress!!!!

on the bright side, i got yet ANOTHER 400w hps :D so i'm running 1200 right now.... i'm considering bringing the 1000w out of the basement. if it werent' for the blasted heat...(not air cooled)

I honestly cannot say whether it would help this plant but the plant IS gorgeous and it might be worth a try to spray if you can find the stuff. For me it priceless.....it's saved every single grow of mine since I began using it.

i got everything back to running smoothly again (i hope...) with a few modifications; we ran a duct line from the ac to the grow room, and took out two of the 400w (a hps and mh) and replaced it with the 1000w hps with solarmax bulb. still using a 400w hps for side lighting. pix later.

babe, i can't say; i use super thrive, and all of my babies are very hardy and abuse resistant, even my blueberry's gave me little fuss.

i do know that dg is strong, strong enough to withstand 95f temps without turning, so i still have high hopes. esp since all other conditions are great. she's developing nicely :) if i could just get my bloom booster.....

they stretched when i put them outside, and as you can see, i've butchered them for clones. the male i chopped back to the second node and clipped the lowest branches, leaving two tops. i'll top them, and train them out, play with lst a little...
