Well I already lost 50 some pounds. I just wanna lose about 30 more. But I have eating problems and for once im just trying to do it the healthy way. However I don't like the fact that fruit is supposed to be off limits. But in the book it says if you can eat a small ammount of them then it wont be THAT big of a problem. I love my pineapple, watermellon, grapes and apples

diets are fun and all but honestly... we all know how to lose weight... eat healthy, eat less and get off ur ass...
I did... I lost like 30lbs in like 5 or 6 weeks 195 to 165 and i feel much better
my advice for the exercise part is: find something you can do everyday cause then you won't forget and get out of ur rythem and if u just cant do it one day for whatever reason then its not such a big deal

Yeah I already lost 50 some pounds. Its just that I gained 5 back and im starting to lose my mind over it. Im just so terrified that ill gain my weight back. And this diet seems to be working fine for me and its the best one that I can pick right now. The other ones seem kinda...shady.

Are you doing the traditional atkins, or the modified one?
If you are doing the traditional one, I highly suggest you to stop, because it's extremely unhealthy. Everyone needs carbs.
With that even the modified one, you don't have to stick to the entire plan. Your goal should be to change your lifestyle, rather than just "diet." Dieting sucks.
Carbs are essential. Brown rice, wheat, potatos (not french fries), fruits and vegetables are great sources for healthy carbs.
My recommendation would be to start an exercise program. That way you don't have to watch what you eat as much. Plus, you already look pretty skinny to me, you just need the tonage. Diets won't provide that, exercise does.
Now if you want a good exercise regiment, I can whip you up one real quick, that fits for you. Just tell me your goals, and how time you want to invest it in per week.

I want to say watch out for the meat also,,,look for organic grass fed beef...
THC has got a grip,,,thats why I said you can have fruits here and there... moderation is always key in anything we do... I lost quite a bit on a no carb,,,but as time went by I added carbs ,,,we just can't be excessive or we store it as fat... carbs are energy and we need to burn that energy...

I do work out alot hun. I do strip aerobics and dancing, I walk when I go to the park on the track, I lift 12 pound weights, and I do some videos. I try to get as much cardio as possible ya know. But ive been trying to work on my thighs and my arms alot lately.

All right, there's gotta be something you aren't satisfied with yourself when looking in the mirror. I mean you work out, but you want to lose weight, and work on your arms and thighs. From a point of perspective of someone whos loves to stay in shape, this puzzles me.
Explain exactly what you want to change. And I can give you suggest at little changes to help meet them. I studied the art of losing body fat. That's what you want to get rid of I'm sure. So hear me out =)

I see what you mean. When I see pictures of girls, I see ways they could improve their bodies with some tonage. I see the potential.
First thing you need to do is built some muscle. You could do all the cardio in the world, but if you don't have muscle to go with it, fat-burning won't be as efficient. I think you should shift your focus for a bit.
I have to stress the important of the legs. Having strong leg muscles helps support muscle on your upper body and keeps the flab off because of the energy required to maintain them. I suggest squats, lunges, calf-raises, and deadlifts. Doing these 4 exercises, while striving to do it at a higher weight will give you great, strong legs. In addition, using various squat techniques works out your back and abs. This alone I guarantee if you put the work in, you'll look noticeably better in 2 months time.
How many repititions of each exercise do you do? Do you try to do it at a high weight, low weight, you have to describe what you are doing. You may fear that you'd gain muscle like guys do, but girls grow muscles different than guys. You don't have to do it extremely heavy, enough to maintain flexibility in the movement for the number of reps you do.

I do squats alot...I do a 30 count usually but if I wanted to I could do 50. I finally got my form right for that haha. And for weights I use 10-12 pound ones. See I follow a video for that. I got the Carmen Electra tapes.

I think you need to be lifting a little more than 10-12 pounds. Adjust to a weight you can do that strains you, but you can work through it for 15-20 reps, with the last rep where you are near the point of muscle failure. Do 3 sets in these instinances.
2nd, I want you to go to bodybuilding.com and look at various exercises you can do to work each muscle. Start a work-out regiment. And about once every 5 weeks, change your routine, so you don't get use to doing certain exercises, give something new. There's a million things you can do and most of it doesn't even require seeing the inside of a gym.
Other thing is if you lift weights, days you don't lift are equally important in getting muscle and getting toned. You need days to have your muscles repair and grow. Doing it all the time just stuns them. So while you rest them, you just do some cardio stuff.

I couldn't advise you on the matter because I'm weary of supplements. In general, most range from outright scams to being unhealthy. I believe you can achieve your goal without them. Especially being a fellow cancer survivor, we have wills stronger than 10 warriors. Trust me, put the work in, be persistant, don't be afraid to learn, and you'll have the body you want in no time! Don't listen to what the mainstream media says on weight loss and getting the perfect body, because it's totally wrong.
Exercise more, eat a little less fast food, drink more water. Just add the bit of the intricacies and you are good to go!

Hey Reb,
I do not know the differences between Atkins and South Beach, but they are similar. I did SB 2 yrs ago and lost 35 pounds, it was rough the first 2 weeks (no fruits and very little carb action), but then the cravings were gone and it was almost easy. Use common sense and remember that its not just a diet til you get the weight off, but ideally its a new way to eat to maintain the new bod, too
good luck
:)

You're welcome! I just want to show that you should focus less on the diet and more on the exercise. Just use common sense when it comes to eating, and reward yourself, most important of all. In no time will you get a killer bod, and you'll drive your man crazy, I'm tellin' ya, plus add some ooomph to your moves =)

I've never tried atkins
i think its hard on everyone, though
the zone diet, written by a pHd author, named, Spears was a answer to my hopes, 11 years ago. Fruit is great, especially CHERRIES AND PLUMS. The zone is a life long thing, done with various degrees of dedication. I had less than one percent body fat eating, fruit, oatmeal, peanut butter and protein every snack 5 times a day.
never hunger, never fatigue
the zone is done everywhere/;mcdonald's del taco, ect. I eat pizza several times a month and i am still within military weight standards.
the zone is based on controling insulin .
fat on a woman is very pleasant.
the softness is blissful to my emotions

I went on Atkins over 2 months ago and it changed my life. I have lost 32 pounds so far, and over 43 inches overall body fat. I am 34 pounds from my weight goal.
It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I have never been healthier.
As for exercise, I do pilates, tae bo, and target area programs. I powerwalk at least 3 miles everyday, both uphill and inclines, with 5 pounds in weights. The best fitness video you can use is Slim in 6. Check it out.
Good luck. It works if you work it, as they say.

actually, for some people, it is.....there is nothing wrong with lo carbs....you get enough carbs, just not carbs you dont need, like from sugar and white flours.....you only eat very lo carbs the first 2 weeks and it actually reprograms your body and converts you to using protein for fuel instead of the carbs, as it should be....atkins isnt for everyone...it is like a self help group for carb addicts, to break the cycle and teach you and your body how to eat responsibly....i for one am much healthier on it...

Without going into all of the details of celiac disease, I'd like to address the issue of grains, specifically wheat, barley and rye, and what they have to do with the Atikins Diet.
Elimination of grains is an early part of the Atkins diet. This is when people usually see their results fastest. Unfortunately for many, the reintroduction of gluten grains into their diet is a mistake.
The substance called gluten, found in wheat, rye and barley, has negative effects on most people that do not even have active celiac disease. Those that go on Atkins may, at first, feel better because of the elimination of gluten. Some of these people may even have celiac, a gluten sensitivity, or be at risk for developing celiac if they are genetically pre-disposed to it. One in a hundred people have celiac diseas, but only three percent are diagnosed. The only treatment currently available is the complete elimination of gluten from the diet. As many as half the population has a gluten sensitivity, which can lead to all kinds of health problems if they continue to consume gluten - they are not diagnosed because they don't have gastrointestinal problems, anemia and other typical sypmtoms of celiac disease, and their blood and biopsy tests are negative.
When people say that they have a carb "addiction", this could very well be an addiction to gluten - which is chemically similar to opiates. It affects the brain and neurological functions.
A protein similar to gluten, casein, is found in dairy products. I have an intolerace to that, also. Often, doctors are not even aware of casein problems.
There is a growing number of children and adults with Autism, and other disorders, who have been helped immensely by diets that eliminate gluten and casein. Interestingly, these people do not have a higher percentage of celiac disease than the rest of the population.
I highly recommend the book Dangerous Grains, below. For people that have celiac disease, or know someone that does, Celiac Disease - A Hidden Epidemic, is very informative.

low aerobics, ie walking or light housework is a more effective, lipose tissue reducer, than heavy aerobics or lifting weights all according to the zone diet
carbs, protiens and fat are eatin within specific ratios of each other,

I don't quite know how to say this 'properly', so I don't mean any offense by this at all.
As long as you're eating healthy, and exercising, that's really good enough. I know most girls aren't happy with the way they look but generally the guys are. It's good that you think about it but don't overdo it. Looking 'perfect' isn't worth your health.
And I'm afraid, after seeing my dad use the diet and a couple friends I had years ago, it's not very good. It didn't seem to do anything and it harmed their health.

chart what you do in terms of exercise and eating. no mindless eating, i think of eating for performance not for pleasure. Drink water, lots of it.

I lost about 65 pounds using adkins and of course lots of exercise. It took me about 18 months.
I don't stick to the diet so much anymore. I have kept the weight off.
However it is very very rare for me to go on carb binges. I think I eat pasta once every 3 months or so. The only time I eat toast is when I am sick. I may eat french fries 2-3 times per year. Most of these foods make me feel really bloated now if I eat them. I do eat tortillas (living n mex) however it is around 2-3 and they only equal out to 10 carbs each. I use splenda instead of sugar. I think of it more as a life change rather than diet.
I am working on loosing another 20 pounds. I am kinda going with a math equation on that though. 1 pound = 3500 calories. So.. If you either up your exercize and burn an extra 500 calories a day or if you limit your food intake by 500 calories a day, you can technically loose 1 pound per week.

It's scary, but the next thing you should do is get tested for DH (as celiacs call it), or celiac. Here's a good video about Celiac of a recent show on the VIEW, with guest celiac expert Dr. Peter Green, author of CELIAC DISEASE - A Hidden Epidemic. They discuss DH, among other topics related to gluten and celiac.

Personally I'd never do the usual style of Atkins just for the cholesterol, but my normal diet is pretty low carb and the carbs I get are all whole grain, and the protein sources I usually eat are mostly beans and as much fish as I can sink my teeth into, yum, sashimi....
When I quit drinking I lost over 10 pounds right away and I'm still losing weight (about a pound a week, pretty reasonable) even though I don't consider myself to be on a diet, but I was drinking SO much for so long that with those extra ~500-1000 calories a day gone from my diet, I might as well be on one.

Dr atkins had two heart attacks. Just keep that in mind.
I'm not a defender of the Atkins diet, but he didn't suffer cardiovascular problems. In the press release below it says, "Atkins' heart disease stemmed from cardiomyopathy, a condition that was thought to result from a viral infection." Here is the story, below, the first statement was from his wife, in 2004, after he died from a head injury suffered from a fall on the ice.
"It has now become clear to me that if I don't speak out, unscrupulous individuals will continue to twist and pervert the truth in an attempt to destroy the reputation and great work of my late husband," Mrs. Atkins said in the statement. " Obviously such people will have no trouble picking and choosing bits and pieces of fact and supposition to mislead the world.
"But here is the truth: my husband's medical records have been reviewed by knowledgeable doctors and his medical condition discussed with cardiac specialists. It is clear that Dr. Atkins developed a condition called cardiomyopathy approximately three years prior to his death. It is also true that when Robert developed cardiomyopathy his coronary arteries showed only minimal and clinically insignificant signs of coronary artery disease, consistent with what would be expected in a 69-year-old man.
"Cardiomyopathy is a serious and progressive condition and was, I have been told, in Robert's case, caused by a viral infection. Though this condition significantly weakened his heart, its cause was clearly related to an infection and not his diet."
The condition "was well documented and openly discussed by Robert himself on national television," she said in the statement, noting that her husband had discussed his heart disease â?? and a heart attack he suffered in April 2002 â?? on CNN's Larry King Live and other programs.
The medical examiner's report was given to the Journal by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that advocates vegetarianism.
Dr. Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council in New York, told the Journal that Atkins' heart disease stemmed from cardiomyopathy, a condition that was thought to result from a viral infection. Atkins' weight was due to bloating associated with his condition and the time he spent in a coma after his head injury, and he had been much slimmer during most of his life, Trager said.
Trager also issued a statement Tuesday. "Any implication that Dr. Atkins was obese or fat prior to his coma, shows a blatant disregard or even worse, lack of understanding of the medical facts surrounding this case, or of the physiology of severe heart failure and the degree of fluid retention that occurred during this hospitalization," he said.
On Tuesday, the medical examiner's office would say only that Atkins died of a head injury from the fall.

skink hit the nail on the head...everything in moderation....we eat more fat than people would usually think they can, but not an enormous amount....we can have bacon, yes, but we cant have a pound a day either...that is how the diet teaches you the whole way of life and everything....on another note..the reason we eat the fats is largely because it provides you with satiation (sp?), feeling full...if you want a snack and eat a few peanuts, you would be amazed at how full you feel, compliments of that oil/fat.....

As far as for the Atkins diet, I don't know anybody that has tried it, I just know Carl's Jr. caved in and had an Atkinds friendly burger with no bun. I'm sorry, but if a diet requires me to replace the fucking bun on my burger with lettuce...I'd rather be fat!
I know Tom Leykis was on it for some time, and he went on and on about how great it is on his show...but I just recently saw him on TV and the guy is still an enormous and disgusting looking man. I don't know if he bounced back or what happened, but I thought he was a lot thinner a couple years ago when he got into that Atkins diet. Be careful you don't blow up with all ur weight back
Personally, I think the only healthy way to staying at a healthy weight is to work out. Dieting is just the lazy way to being thin, and it almost always doesn't work. You need a high metabolism, and you get that from working out in a gym.

sumJust in case U care......something to consider, atkins has had several heart attacks and I.....
for the past 11 years, I lived by the zone book diet, written, by phD sears
yesterday, a navy captain, medical officer, told me, "only one in 30 adults is as healthy as I am"
My blood pressure is actually "low", though
I'm gonna research this online

Eight pounds is good. But definitely watch out on the Atkins plan. You're a young woman, so it's probably not too dangerous for you, but the high fat/high protein plan can really run people's cholesterol up sky high, and the younger ones feel self conscious about the ketosis breath they have. I have patients who do Atkins, and they always lose weight and report that it's easy, but their blood lipids never look healthy while they're on it. They get kidney stones, too. They also tend to gain back rebound weight real easily when they add carbs back in or if they fall off the wagon. I try to urge them more toward The Zone diet or the South Beach plan if they want a popular book diet. That way they're getting complex carbs along the way, which keeps them from craving simple carbs while they're dieting but also keeps them from rebound gaining so bad when they fall off the wagon or end the diet. What I really like for them to do is go to Weight Watchers and keep going for the rest of their lives, but few ever do that.

06-06-2007, 02:46 PM
That's to be expected that you'd have low BP. You're a young woman. Dave worries a lot more about what Atkins does to people's blood lipids. That's your cholesterol ratios, triglycerides, etc. Chances are those are not high on you, either, because of your age. But they definitely go up in older folks who're on Atkins.
