I have a 105w fluorescent running on a batwing type reflector with a mogul socket and 3 prong plug, my question is can i replace the flourescent with a HID bulb and add a ballast? for example can i put a 400w hps bulb in the socket and plug it into a hps ballast without problems?

Sure as long as the new bulb is for a mogul socket...and your using a 400 watt rated HID ballast. The biggest bulb I found in a medium base socket was a 150 hps, there could be more, I never looked for them really.

I have a plug between a 150 hps light bulb and the ballast, but I think you'll have to wire that mogul to the ballast tho.

yeah it seems the problem is the power cord from the socket to the ballast doesnt fit because the socket has a cord u just plug into the wall. i am going to have to jus cut it and rewire with a plug i found on the net Sunlight Supply Power Cord Smart Volt 120V - 6 ft (for Galaxy Ballast): J from Kalyx.com - Hydroponics & Gardening - Ballast & Socket Assemblies (http://www.kalyx.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/548081.0/CategoryID/12000.0/SubCatID/2785.0/file.htm)
