Cheapest set-up for 1 to 2 plants?

This will be my first attempt at growing indoors, I only want to grow 1 or 2 plants for my first attempt. I will be using my empty closet space, but I'm not sure what I need.

I know I need lights, water, seeds, soil, etc. but exactly what supplies should I use, and what is the cheapest equipment I could use to make a plant with a decent yield and/or quality.
