Soil Required?

When growing outdoors, is using soil a must, or can someone just use the dirt that is naturally out in someones backyard, or woods, etc.

I planted 6 seeds earlier today, but I didn't use special soil or fertilizer, I wanted to attempt to get some plants growing from the edge of the woods next to our house, will it even work or did I waste 6 seeds.

Also, can anyone here point me to a useful outdoor growing guide or walkthrough for someone who is making their first attempt at growing? I don't want to try to grow in my parents house because I know they don't approve so I'm trying to take the alternative.

Any help is appreciated and I'll show you all pics of my plants if I ever get any going.

First off 'Kudos' to you for not growing in your parents house.

Some seeds may germinate and grow in the untouched ground, but remember plants in the wild produce hundreds of seeds for a reason.

If you condition the soil to make it more agreeable to the plants it will make your chances for success that much better.

Well, in that case what is a good way to make the soil o dirt more agreeable to my plants needs? Do I have to buy potting soil, or would there be a way to make the untouched ground good enough to expect a decent grow in?

I'm new to growing so I don't know much, and I can't find an outdoor growing guide that really shows me what I need to do.

Well, I actually have never grown outside, But in my yard I always work in some sand and peat moss, about 2 parts soil, 2 parts peat moss and 1 part sand.
Basically you want to keep the soil from becoming to compact (sand) and sometheng to retain moisture (peat).

If you ssearch enough there was a couple good threads about outdoor grows about 2-3 months ago, or one the experts on here will chime in.......good luck to ya.
