View Full Version : Dizzy's Cabinet grow log

I hope you all don't mind, but I've already started a log in the cabinet section and updating two logs seems a little redundant. So I will link it and update the link in this section when I update the log in the cab section.

Some updated pics and the addition of a little suprise. :)

Plants seem to have recovered from the burning, one seems unsure though.
Soil is very dry in these pics, the fan and CFLs rape the soil of moisture very quickly. After the photo shoot I added an inch of MG moisture control soil to the top and watered heavily. I figure the minute addition of nutes shouldn't hurt much, it was an inch or less addition to the cups, so very minimal.
The last pic was a freebie I picked up a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure it was operable and I thought the bulb was burnt out... I was blindedly wrong. :stoned: In fact I'm still blind... It's a 150 watt HPS bulb with matching fixture. Since I know it works I will try to fab up a sheetmetal enclose so I don't have to install this heavy duty outside security enclosure in my cabinet.
Also not shown in the addition of a 1.5" passive intake mounting on the front portion of the floor and leading to the side of the box where the exhaust is. The pipe runs about 3' into the box and I configured a temp light trap with 3 90 degree elbow outside the cab, just to keep it dark while the silicone seals set up and then I can configure it how I want it.
I might try the HPS for the evening to see how the cab handles the temp and see if I need to work on more intake or exhaust.

That brown on the tips is either nute burn or your ph is off, thought I'd let you know. You may want to ck the run off of the water coming from your cups. Although, you may have already solved the problem with the good watering you just gave them- depending what water you used of course! I'd already be looking for new pots too.....
You've already getting over the main first hurdles most growers experience....yah! Isn't this hobby fun? You are doing well!

hold off on nutes until 3 weeks into veg

that HPS light worries me with all those wires right there, i would undo the whole setup and remove the ballast and ignitor and make them remote somewhere else outside the grow area.

get some sheet metal and mothers magnum polish and polish a reflector for the inside of that hood and cut to fit, other than that just keep off those nutes.

Dizzy1
05-22-2007, 04:15 PM
Thanks guys. :)

Bree, not sure if you noticed and if you did, if you are sure about the ailments. But all those plants were pretty burnt a few days ago when I hooked up the hood and added more CFL's in the cab. They are making a great recovery from it. But, if you stil think it's ph or nute burn (which I really dont think it's nutes, last night was the 1st time any nutes were added to the soil) then I will check the ph. I need to get a test kit anyway.
Invision, I agree! All those wires make me nervous too. In addition to not wanting to add some ugly ass brown box in my cab, I wanted to rewire that sucker in something remote. Do you know how long the run of wires can be from the socket to the electronics?

And I am having a good time. It's nice to have a hobby that has near instant results to what works and what doesn't. Like this morning I checked on the plants because I was nervous about the MG addition, but holy hell they liked it! Like little gree afros on sticks. poof

OOPs, I must have missed that they had nute burn...in my defense, I did notice that you said you burned them with the CFL. Yes, I think you should def, get your ph kit. With you adding the MG soil, you ph may get thrown out of whack, like real quick like! But even if it doesn't (which for those of you who remember our dear GK, the knowm used water that had a ph of 8 with MG soil and that made it perfect, quick someone post that link!!) you are going to need it basically soon as you use nutes. At least that is my experience.....It's always good to ck your runoff after adding something...
Also chem ferts do tend to bring the soil ph down after time....

Now lemme tell you my experience with ph kits. I've bought the soil one from soilmaster (UTTER crap), one for testing pools/spas (okay if you can differentiate colors Real well), and a Hanna student ph tester (the best I've had thus far but I've found things that I wish I would have noticed before I plopped down the moolah, about 25). If you go for the digital, I've heard Milwaukee has one for 40 that is good...info from Latewood in another post somewhere....The thing I don't like about mine is it has two calibration points (blech more work for me) and that the points move much too easy and I end up having to calibrate it everytime I use it.

WOW, I wrote a freaking book!! I probably gave you way more info than you even wanted, but for some reason I felt like sharing.

 Bree

Dizzy1

lol
I don't think I said they had nute burn. BUT, no matter what, I will get a PH tester. Again, thank you for the information. I'll see what I can find for an electronic tester and I'll stear clear of the "soilmaster".

Now if I can find large black square pots in town... I don't want to plant in round, I can maximize space with square.

Dizzy1

Invision, I forgot to mention that the light's reflector was absent from the picture because I just did a temp wiring job to see if it works. Still scarry in there... there might be spiders hiding! :P

hey dizzy

i believe the ballast and ignitor can be up to 10 feet from the socket so i wouldnt worry much if its going to be rather close by.

i have never used a PH tester with my grows all though i do have one i find it a unnessasary item unless you do hydro, i just know exactly how much PH up i need when i add nutes plus i go out of my way and by distilled water and add Cal-Mag Plus to it, add my nutes, 7 drops of PH up BAM 6.5

if i was to use tap water i would break out the PH testing.

did you say somewhere you were using miracle grow soil or moisture control or something??i had 2 plants in mg soil once, they were both fine for first 2 weeks then i gave one nutes, straight away it got majorly nute burned, the other one did nicely though,i never gave that plant any nutes at all until after 1st week flowering, and then started a dilute flower nute mix and worked it up

anyway i guess what i'm saying is,if i were you,i wouldn't give the plants in mg soil any nutes until after you start flower or chances are they will burn

Dizzy1
05-22-2007, 09:09 PM
Thanks Invision. 10' is more than enough to mount. My cab have purpose built overhangs on the top/back and bottom of the right side of the cab. I did this to mount anything I don't want inside the cab. I'm going to drill out vent holes in that enclosure (after I work the wiring) and mount a small fan inside to exhaust it.
I thought I read somewhere that you can make tap water more usable by letting it sit out for awhile? Wives tale?

Atsar, you did read that I was using Moisture control MG soil... but only the top 1/2 to 1" which is on top of the Black Gold potting soil. I have read about MG burning up plants and also helping plants. To stay on the safe side I was gointo mix it up with the Black Gold and Perlite when I transplant... which will most likely be tonite as I got some pots at lunch. No square pots in a 2-3 gallon size can be found locally, so I had to settle for the roundies.

Thanks for the replies guy, all the help is what I need.

Think I might wait to sex the plants before I put them in those, or soon after. They're pretty tall, even after I trim them down, so I'd like to be down a few plants when I do it.

Nice find! I have been trying to sex my plants before they go into the big boys....I haven't succeeded yet, ha ha. I usually sex them shortly after the transplant, more room for root growth I suppose.

Did another transplant last night. Plants were root bound like a mo fo!
I'm going to need to weed out half of them asap, my cab space got a teeeensy bit smaller. ;) Checked on them all this morning and.. wow... they all have taken to the bigger pots with some vigor!
And they're starting to stink, smell good, but still stink. This weekend will be filter making time.

I'll update pics tonight.

Dear diary,

Today I decided to get a few more lights. I picked up another BFB (Big freakin bulb) and -sighs- and getto'd it up on top of the one I'm going to call Bertha and she comes with a theme song.
"One of these things is not like the others, guess which one it is".
There are a couple of plants in there that I'm sure got their lunch money taken by her. You'll notice em, the skinny sickly looking kids with bad skin and glasses. One of which is one of the two that got their roots severed when I tried to take the netting off those Peat pellets when I transplanted. I believe the second one could be the other Lost root case.
Anyway, the growth is really surprising to me, especially that one... Bertha.
Got my pantyhose. :D To build the scrubber... perverts. What a treat that was. How many times do you get to ask the shoe department gal,
"This might sound like an odd question, but where are your pantyhose?"
I went on to explain, because I had to... I could only act like it didn't mean anything for song long, I know what would be going through my mind if I were her.
"I wonder if he wants a quickie"
Or maybe, "Transvestite? I wonder if he knows Larry in the Deli department, don't think I didn't see you at that club Larry, you could have just told me about your other life, I would have understood Larry, I would have understood! You didn't need to leave...".
So I said there was another use for pantyhose... and she looked at me with question in her eyes... She probably thinks I'm going to rob a bank.

And it's FRIDAY! :rastabanna: WOOOOooooo.....

And yes I lightly sprayed the leaves this evening, and I made sure there wasn't any drops on the leaves by the time I lowered the lights.

Dizzy1
05-28-2007, 09:06 AM
Built a kitty litter scrubber and changed the exhaust layout.
I got one of those cheapy 6" Inductor fans and since I'm not using 6" duct, the 120mm moved more air with 4" duct. I figured 6" might do ok, but it didn't and it was a freebie anyway, they never rung it up.
Those scrubbers work AWESOME. I don't smell crap! or plants.
Next time I make one, I will use window screen material instead of pantyhose, I think it'll be more durable.

Dizzy1
05-28-2007, 09:08 AM
Now that I'm looking at it, I should have just used dryer vent in place of that sheet metal, I'd recon it would be noisier though. This only took me 4 hours to do, what's another 3. ;)

Dizzy1
05-29-2007, 09:10 AM
They all seem to be buffing up. Got some Superthrive today, added a 1/4 teaspoon to a gal of water and watered the kids.
I have a few that have some leaves that looked a little washed out in parts? Too much water, not enough? I know I don't over water them, tonight I did give a decent drenching though.

Dizzy1
05-31-2007, 08:47 PM
Little updated pics. One of the pictures has a plant with some nute burn, the only one with it, another weird thing is the look of the top leaves. They looked like this before the nute burn kicked in.
Another shot of the one with the washed out looking leaves.
All the others are doing great and getting big.
I have some "custom" reflectors coming in the mail and after they're mounted up with lights I will be sending the kids into Flowering land to see who stays and who goes.

mythin
06-01-2007, 12:33 AM
Superthrive is some strong stuff. I think 1/4 teaspoon per gallon is way too much. I use 2 drops per gallon, and on the bottle it says 1 drop per gallon is all you need. i dunno. Maybe im wrong, I used 2 drops and i noticed a bit of nute burn myself, but im also using miracle grow organic potting mix, so it may be a combination of both.

Dizzy1
06-01-2007, 04:29 PM
I'm not so sure it was from the ST or the super concentrate "Spoonit" orchid food I added, 30-10-10. I wouldn't even call the dosage a 1/4 strength and that was the only plant to react. I gave them more last night, same dosage, and this morning they are all looking great, even Mrs. Burnsalot. I'm just trying to get some good Veg nutes onboard before I switch them over to flowering this weekend. I'm also using a small layer of MG moisture control soil.

Ok, FINALLY got the camera.

As you can see, space is starting to get a lil cramped.

There is the reflector. Going to pick up a new bulb tonight, who knows how old the current one is, maybe 5-10 years.

CFL's are just tossed in right this minute. Need to work on ventilation, the (4) 42 watters that were in there just kill the temps, current ones are a 27 and 13 watt. I have a shit load of great CFLs to add, just not enough cooling.

Going to try to pick up materials for some cool tubes tonight.

1 pretty sick plant, all saggy. Most have tasted the nutes on the lower leaves, sorry lil plants, daddy got carried away while watering.

Looks great, Dizzy. :)

You were smarter to use the sheet metal bits than dryer vent flexiduct. Flexiduct is not as flow efficient as plain metal duct- and you're right, much quieter with metal. If you can eliminate any of the 90 bends, it will be more efficient yet. Looks great, tho. Very neat.

For you this evening I submit more pictures for your viewing pleasure.
The plants are booming along and really starting to smell nice. Makes me so happy to have that filter.
I rigged up the cool tube, works like a charm. Afforded me the ability to add some CFL love.
I also had to so some bondage via light bruising and LST.
Just waiting to get some peep show action going to see their bits. There a few suspects in there I will be keeping an eye on. I tried to get the pics, but they didn't turn out well, I need to turn the light off so the camera doesn't geek out. Some of tops are getting all matted up and thick and stinky, but as I pry them open, it looks like little balls are forming, heavily, and it's all intertwined with tiny leaves. I need to degunk the lens so the pics would be sharper.

Well, I have some news...
The "stealth" factor to my cab was unstealthed and I had to get rid of them. :(
That happened Friday night. Right when I was able to sex them all and BAM, see ya. I can only be mad at myself.

Anyway. 4 of the plants were females and the rest were deep sixed (dumped). The remaining 4 are currently with my buddy, using the equipment from my cab. The plants should do better now and I still have custody rights. ;)
I'll just be growing vicariously through him.

I'll still update the log here when I can, but it won't be as frequently.

When I decide to tempt my fate in the future, it will be a micro PC grow. Lowryder style. I've been reading alot about those micro grows, some neat set-ups around online. Well after a long absense, here's an update!

As you might know, the plants are now at their co-parents home. There are 4 females out of the 8. They were transplanted last night into 3 gallon containers and should be getting situated. There is a little heat issue with the new location, but it's going to be taken care of. Future should hold a 400-600 watt HPS, maybe a mylar remodel and possibly more odds and ends.

Nice grow log, Dizzy. Especially since you're doing it elsewhere.

Keep up the reports, please.

I don't have any pics to share and most likely wont until there are trimmed limbs laying on a table ready to dry. (We cooked em with some flowering nutes, as in not pretty at all and a little embarrassing...) But today is day 57 of flowering and either this Wednesday or Friday night will be chop chop time.
