Wow thats horriable. I am really starting to get pissed at the message that some of these churches are sending these days. They teach that christianity is the only way and if you arnt a christian then you are a bad person. I am a christian myself but i dont beleive in these traditional churches that teach more hate thain love. Jesus once said "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." Mathew 5:43-44. Now even though this girl was not their enemy it still follows the same principals. I really hope that they win their law suite.

I suspect he has to get on the hotline to do it.. kind of the same sort of hotline that one would have to get on if you wanted to call Ronald Reagan from Gorbachev's office...

i think that girl was asking for it. granted its not right what happened, but she could have easily kept her mouth shut. i was a basketball player in high school and my team prayed before games. i didnt make a big stink out of it, i bowed my head with everyone else. i didnt pray, but i didnt feel the need to start screaming bloody murder and alert the press that my rights were being violated.

I dunno...im a atheist and most people just leave me be. Sometimes you get the whole "why?" question and they'll tell you that you need to be saved but thats rare anymore.

I'm quite proud of the fact that i am atheist, i don't shout it from the rooftops but if asked i will explain my reasons and how very comfortable i am with my non-belief. Darwins the man.;)

It's the other way around in the UK. Most people now will think you're a bit loopy if you believe in God.

And quite rightly.

Makes me glad Im not in a small town. Though here in the bible belt, that hardly matters. Religion will be forced on you regardless of what you believe. Or at least they'll try.

So people who believe in God are loopy?

You must not have a good-understanding of physics, quantum physics or theoretical sciences. You see, according to known physics the Universe shouldn't even exist.

1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause of its
existence.
2. The universe began to exist.

2.1 Argument based on the impossibility of an
actual infinite.

2.11 An actual infinite cannot exist.
2.12 An infinite temporal regress of
events is an actual infinite.
2.13 Therefore, an infinite temporal
regress of events cannot exist.

2.2 Argument based on the impossibility of
the formation of an actual infinite by
successive addition.

2.21 A collection formed by successive
addition cannot be actually infinite.
2.22 The temporal series of past events
is a collection formed by successive
addition.
2.23 Therefore, the temporal series of
past events cannot be actually
infinite.

3. Therefore, the universe has a cause of its
existence.

I mean, do you know *how* remarkably fine-tuned the Universe is? According to Weinberg, if the energy during the big-bang was different by 10^120, or

How about the Earth's placement? Or the fact that everything in the Universe can be defined and expressed in terms of the 1.618, or Phi?

God is expressed in the mathematics of the Universe, He is the math, but is he is also much, much more. The Universe is clearly designed, there is no such thing as coincidence (any statistician can tell you that), and there is clearly a Designer.

Do not doubt, because you are thinking of the Judeo-Christian version, which is only a version, not the real thing. No one knows, but trust me, there is something that makes the gears turn.

P.S.
Darwinian Evolution is the biggest falsehood ever. You should re-read the Theory of Evolution, which is far more complicated and different than what you hear in the media and grade-school. Evolution is true, but not Darwin's ideology - not mention, he never once used the word "evolution." He said "tendency to progression," not evolution, which implies that the the population has undergone an improvement.

did you guys ever hear george carling take then ten commandments and boil it all down to one commandment? if not he basically took all the commandments and through george carlin logic came up with this one commandment : keep thy religion to thyself!

George Carlin is, quite-frankly, retarded.

Not to mention, that is, as I stated above, an aspect of the Judeo-Christian interpretation of what God is.

God in the Old Testament is a hypocrite. He says thou shall not kill, yet orders the Jews to commit genocide against the races next to them.

Have you ever heard of freelance Monotheism, New Age Spirituality or the Tao Te Ching?

Also in the above post, if the Weinberg initial energy was different by that much, life could not exist in the Universe.

No one knows, but trust me, there is something that makes the gears turn.

I agree that this seems like a logical hypothesis from our limited human perspective. I do not believe it is plausible that the religious ideals of a god had anything to do with it though.

Regarding the so called improbability of the universe we do not have enough information to make an accurate mathematical prediction. How many universes are there? How many times has it potentially expanded and contracted allowing for many different resulting expressions of the energy in the universe. We dont even know with certainty the size of the universe.

Essentially we still do not know why we are here or even if there is a comprehendable reason. It could perhaps be equivalent to an ant learning calculus its just too complex for us to presently (and perhaps ever) understand. The ideas of gods were and still are easy and conforting explanations of the unexplainable drawn upon human desires and emotion. In my opinion the plausibility of a being with thought processes and anything to do with human desires, emotions and activities while a pleasant thought is not a plausible explanation.

I would say that God/Tao is omnipotent, or at least its actions are, but that it is sentient in a way that is incompressible to human beings. Also, I take an absurdist viewpoint on the Universe in relation to mankind.

Actually, we do have enough information and understanding of physics to make an accurate prediction about the plausibility of the Universe. We do not, however, have an accurate or complete understanding of Quantum physics.

Also, the Universe doesn't expand and contract, it is continues to expand. Our Universe is continuing to expand, and building speed. The Universe will likely continue this action until Heat Death, not the Big Crunch.

Your hypothesis as to the where the belief in God originates, is also inadequate and an example of pseudo-profundity. Where the belief in a Creator originates from is unknown. Speculation, purely.

The fact of the matter is absence of evidence does not equate to evidence of absence.

P.S.
In answer to your query, Higher4Hockey, I may have been rambling; I tend to do that. I quit smoking cigarettes, so my posts likely reflect my addled-minded brain, ATM. Without cigarettes, I tend to become confused and/or go on tangents.

Tom-

1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause of its
existence.
2. The universe began to exist.

You're a Christian, or something similar, so, I'll disprove your theory of a Single God creating the universe.

Since you think God created the universe, God must've existed beforehand in order to create it, because according to the Bible, he did (and it wouldn't make sense without him). Since God exists, something must've caused his existence, therefore, God must've been made by something that was around before him (possibly in a different dimension, universe, etc.). Therefore, the theory of One True God being the highest power is disproved because something must've caused his existence. Whatever created God had to exist as well, so, we go up and up and up until we pass out from typing "Whatever created the creator of the Creator of the Creator of the Creator ... of God had to exist, so something must've been around to create him."

Personally, I believe most of the Christian views of treating others and such, and think the Bible is a great book for teaching morals (the New Testament anyway, the old testament God is very asshole-ish), but my afterlife beliefs are more Buddhist than any other mainstream religion.

I forget what this topic was about...

God is expressed in the mathematics of the Universe, He is the math, but is he is also much, much more. The Universe is clearly designed, there is no such thing as coincidence (any statistician can tell you that), and there is clearly a Designer. Then why is my forearm only 1.3 times the size of my hand? I must be a bad design. Phi when relating to the real world rarely works, unless you have optimal settings, aka settings that phi will work on.
