m starting to believe that there is alot of prejudism against emo's,punks and metal heads. My daughter wears black, listens to dark music[she got this from me unfortunately], wears dark skirts way past her knees and either cons or docs, she is only 14 and I have let my children be there own people, i even let her get her lip pierced. She is to afraid to walk to the shop because of being called either a gothic slut or something as low by a car load of guys or a couple of plastics wearing smalling shorts than my undies. She gets told to cut herself and she's a loser at school continually by other students. She gets straight a's and has been awarded for her high achievements by the premier of our State. Some of the teachers even treat her badly because of her appearance and have accused her of cheating, when she is by far the smartest one in the class. Though it was funny when the school called me up to tall me what a wierdo she was and i turned up in my cons, cradle of filth Tshirt and ripped army pants with my lip pierced...appearance means shit, so why are all these people judging by it. I believe you get good and bad in every walk of life. I had to stick up for a kid/teen a few weeks back because some smart ass jocks thought they would bash him for his appearance.

That shit really pisses me off, man. I get flack sometimes for my long hair and generally rocker style, also.
Don't worry about it, though. Your daughter may be called a loser, but she's obviously a highly intelligent young lady who is going to go far in life. Those spawns of conformity who insult her are the real losers.

You should've seen the principal's expression when he came in giving out honour roll certificates and he ended up giving one to a dude with shoulder-length hair and a Pink Floyd shirt. I just smiled at him.

THE SCHOOL CALLED YOU TO TELL YOU WHAT A WEIRDO SHE IS? Now, THAT is fucked up. She's a stellar student, and they call you to tell you they don't like her appearance?!

The more things change the more that they stay the same.....30 years ago we were considered grubs and of course there were the jocks then too. Same b.s. in the highschool, etc.....
I always found it ironic that these "jocks" would be the first in line to buy a couple joints off me, the grub, every morning before school.:stoned:

She had one teacher trying to get facial piercings banned when she got hers...but she just shrugs off alot of the shit people say, but not all kids do...one of her friends gets really upset and distraught
That sucks for your daughter, and unfortunately that happens to a lot of kids who don't conform and wear the clothes all the popular kids wear. She seems pretty cool and if i knew her, I'd be her friend. Of course, would you mind a 16 year old doper hanging out with your daughter lol? I only smoke on weekends :)

she's just learning what everyone has to learn eventually; if you do not conform to an acceptable norm, you will be considered an enemy by the masses. if you are a part of a protected minority (race, sexual orientation, religion etc.) you will be tolerated, but those who merely see the world from a slightly different point of view are considered trouble-makers and heretics. thus has it always been, mankind's ethical progress is nearly nonexistent.

Well i'd first of all make sure your child isn't a dickhead.
So what you're telling us is.. you hold a prejudice against prejudice people.
haha
anyway, you act like it is suprising your daughter gets treated like that. She is the one who chose to dress like a stereotypical goth so she has to be willing to accept some shit she may get from stupid people. You are right that visual apperance means shit, but the way you look is the way most people will judge you. Just like if your daughter dressed like a whore she would probably get harassed about that as well.
Also I think a lot of the people that dress themselves up to look gothic or counter culture like the attention they get from people who stare at them or even make fun of them.

i was a little punk in jr high and high school. i used to dye my hair blue and shit and think i was all cool. but i got lots of shit. when my red hair dye faded and looked pink i got all this homophobe jargon thrown at me from all these macho jocks and cool kids.
i think its gonna happen no matter what, no matter where. all the different groups and crowds either coexist or clash, i.e. hip hop kids, straight edge hardcore kids, punk rockers, student body nerds, jocks, stoners, etc.
it sucks, everyone talks shit!

Wow i really feel for you. I hate seeing prejudice in this world. People need to realize that its not about what you wear or how you look. Its all about whats inside. Now if she was rebelling against and refusing to cooperate then that would be a different story. But it seems to me that she is doing just fine academicly and thats all that should really matter. Don't let the school tell you that she is different or single her out in any way. The best thing that adults can do is let kids do their thing and choose their own path in life. As long as she is not hurting herself or anyone else then it doesn't seem to be a big deal to me. In my eyes you've done the right thing by letting her be herself. The worst thing a parent can do is try to change their child into something their not. Just try to teach her that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It will be those jocks that will end up like Al Bundy when they grow up while your daughter succeeds. Just remember, Bob Dylan once said "For the looser now, will be later to win."

Dear Father of Daughter,
The problem is not that the kids are judging her by appearance rather than success in school. Its the fact that they are judging her in the first place. It is their problem. Atleast she is expressing herself through her appearance. Even though that in itself isnt really a good way to express ones self...in my opinion. But at that age, its ok because she is just thinking a lot, getting older, etc. You should teach her to forget about what anyone says, because only what she thinks is what matters...and those who care for her...Yes, doing good in school, and doing fine with work and money are good things that show responsibility in a person...however the fact that she is standing out from the "crowd" is the real point to focus on. Thats a good thing in a person...shows she is strong, independent, and has a mind and also is artistic. I would personally be proud if I were you....I know what the people say is just wrong, but the deal is you gotta ignore it the best you can. Fuck em man.....they can be stuck in that dumb excuse for a life.

it's good that your daughter continues to look and wear what she wants to, no matter what the dickheads say her life her choice. they are the ones with the problem they need to grow up, and the teachers need to shut up.

Hi Frank! lol
on a serious note im gonna be honest with you. u know the world you know people your an adult. im in high school and yet i even understand that the world is like this. if you go to get a job and ur at an interview are you gonna dress up like a goth? No fucking way in hell. your gonna wear nice clothes and your gonna act normal or else your not gonna get the job. thats fine if she wants to dress like that when shes at home or shit she can do it at school too but u need to let her know that if she does that the bad will come with it.
And on a further note,(no disrespect to you) you say that u let her be who she wants but it sounds like your the one that influenced her to dress and act that way. shes not being herself shes being you. im not sure how old she is but she will most likely grow out of it soon seeing as most kids that are close to their parents do eventually. anyways i say u sit down and think about this and then have a talk with her.

I know what you'r talking about. Just tell her to keep holding her head up and to be proud of what she looks like and her own acheevements. I know how hard being 14 teen is. And the sooner she gives a damn about what "strangers" think about her,the happier she'll be. They are probably just jelaous of her, being able to be herself. Many of us who roam this earth often look to others to find their faults just to feel better about ouerself. This is the way we have been against eachother for millions of years(cavemenn were no better) , and this is the way we always will be,prejudice.

Im not her father, Im her mother:)...Im not prejudice, learn to read, I said it annoys me, i believe all and everything has good and bad sides...my daughter does not smoke weed and has actually come home when friends have gone off to do so[fuck Im proud:)]...i also have 5 kids that are all different and one is a jock so i don't have anything against them and are as proud of all my kids. My daughter is not goth, she just likes metal and band t'shirts that are usually sold in black...Im just sick of fucktards putting down kids/teens because of thier appearance...my daughter is a strong happy teen...some other kids that I know are really struggling[one boy actually attempted to hang himself he was so distraught, not one of mine mind you], my heart goes out to kids like this and i just wanna rap 'em up in cotton wool and protect them all...of course i know i can't, this sorta crap has gone on since forever ago and i expect it will always happen...but god it eats me up

If i dress like a chav people will think i'm a chav, if i dress like a goth people will think i'm a goth. Sometimes people are afraid of what's different. There definately is a strong dislike for emos, sad but true. If your daughter changed to fit in the norm would all insults stop? Probably not. Insults and prejudice remain in our world, annoyingly.

goths on the other hand....i think they're kind of asking for the attention, negative or not, i think thats the whole point of dressing like that.

I'm sorry, and I hate to be a cunt. But I've been there, when I was 13-15. I've grown up a lot, but I still kept my style; you know what I'm saying?
I dressed like that, straight up for attention. I was a little goth/punk bitch and I loved to shock. You don't "just like band tshirts and metal"..there's more to it. I'm sorry again, I'm not trying to insult you or your daughter but I think it's incredibly immature. As an adult you need to give off a professional appearence most of the time, or people don't take you seriously. I'm not saying wear suits and heals but atleast put on a pair of new jeans with your torn up t-shirt.
I don't dress "preppy" or what ever. I wear what I feel like wearing and what looks good on me, but I've stopped wearing my lime green tutu and lip ring. I've stopped caking on the eyeliner and black eye shadow and I've stopped only listening to certian "goth/punk" bands. I've opened myself up to new styles and new genres of music and I think a lot of the goth/punk/emo kids need to do that.
Even as I got older, I still had pink hair BUT I dressed neatly and nicely so it wasn't a huge deal..more like "hey, does she have pink hair?" not "HAHA LOOK AT THAT STUPID PUNK" which I got as a younger teen. You CAN keep your individuality and still slide under the radar.
I hopefully don't sound like a c u next tuesday and I do feel bad for your daughter, and other kids, because I understand that they're being treated differently by being different but if it bothers them SO much, why don't they tone down a bit?
It's human nature to fear what you don't understand.

people do take me seriously...you are right about the dress for attention bit, she used to blacken her eyes and go all out, but she just dresses in a long plain black skirt, band t-shirt and keeps her hair long and straight now. As for me I dress in what I like and don't care what people think...my friends are mixed. I make alot of friends because I'm one of these people that never shuts up. I like to help people and don't mind giving my kids and thier friends a day out...i own a really big people mover:) The Baker Boys [skaters such as Dustin dollin come over from America] and we took a massive group of boys down to see them, because it was at least a 2 hour drive where they were performing[though sadly dustin dollin was blind and had to be sobered why a skatepark packed with boys/teens waited eagerly[though i blame the sponsors for not looking after thier boys properly. One of them actually smashed into my son who's 8, though my boy was actually rapped:s.
Though at first when I was at the football club and the schools...people acted a little weird, but soon realised i was just like them.
I went to the beach a few weeks back and these guys called me a freak but soon shut up once I emerged in my bikini and my bloke smiles.
Now my bloke is a business man that wears suits everyday, he manages some-one elses company at the moment but we are hoping to soon have enough money to start up our own factory and yard soon. I am invited to all the business dinners and get along with every-one just fine.
As for the person that is an emo Hater...Im a Hater of Emo haters...i find you weak and pathetic, especially when you are picking on some-one that has nothing at all to do with your life, usually some-one younger and weaker. So what that they wear tight jeans and wear make-up...they aren't making you wear it are they...how can being mean to some-one for no apparent reason be fun, to me its mean and cruel, like the jock that ran over the emo in America because he didnt like the way he looked. Now personally I don't think it was the emo that had the problem...I think that sort of behavior to be sick and any-one the does such an act should be imprisoned as they would if they ran over a none emo!!! This sorta stuff really breaks my heart.

I don't think Im ugly and my daughter is a stunner, really pretty Im not just saying that because Im her mum. But i dont care if people give me shit, the people that do Im usually better off than and have a way happier life...my daughter can take it, we laugh cause it pisses them off. Im really an idiot, like if a guy hits on me in public I smile and thens i dribble and be all retarded, there faces go white, one guy even ran...fuck its funny. I just see so many kids picked on these days i think the internet makes it worse, my daughters friend is having the hardest time, it kills me, some kids take it to heart.
Your right about the teacher thing reb girl, one of my friends is a goth kindy teacher...and if she didnt change her whole appearance for work, she wouldnt have a job, even if they still wanted to hire her the parents would have her thrown out, so she wears pink to work, her other fave color, and mine:)

Schools these days are 95% talk. Nothing really happens, except maybe once or twice a school year. That's how it is in my school, the kids are all talk, and that's not good when you have 2300 adolescents crammed into one small building... I'm a junior, and I simply pay no attention. Nobody uses the words cheerleaders or jocks because everyone is, for the most part, an individual(with very few exceptions). I'm in weight lifting and these "jocks" are some of the coolest people I've met. Everyone on the football team has to maintain a 2.5+ gpa if they want to play and most have 3.0 or higher, which is a B average. These so-called "nerds" that I'm told about from an earlier childhood and from movies, are cool as hell!
I'm in Computer Science II with some of the nicest, funniest people ever(Me and my long hair and Iron Maiden T-shirt). People rarely get any prejudice or bashing, at least where I live, and if anyone did anything of the such, they would get beat down into the ground by everyone else.
Hopefully you're daughter, if she hasn't ready, will learn to think nothing of these losers, and just pass them by. I try, but if someone gets in my face, I don't mind being suspended to stand up. I thought things would get worse when you enter highschool, but it's actually alot better. There's no cliques or anything, we're all down. Of course, this may be because all students are on the same team, and we all hate the school education board. This has united us in a way...
I'm not sure if this made sense, I kept having to minimize the window because my parents kept walking by, stupid Dutch Haze and Legal Bud advertisements...
